In 1904 the province of British Columbia purchased 405 hectares for the construction of the hospital and farm in a rural setting. Opening in 1913, Riverview became home to some of the provinces most disturbed patients.
You may recognize this property as it has become a popular filming location. The Matrix franchise, Deadpool, X-Files, Smallville, Riverdale, Butterfly Effect, Final Destination are just a few that have chosen this eerie site for their productions.
Over the years, Riverview grew drastically with more than 80 buildings, nearly five thousand patients and just about as many staff.
Although Riverview was recognized as a model in psychiatric care, it eventually gained a bad reputation after units were overcrowded and use of questionable treatment was prevalent.
While it is recognized as a Heritage site today, Riverview has a long dark history and is believed to be haunted, listed as one of Vancouvers most haunted locations.

Hi Adam & Chyanne, I think the "cages" were so patient's didn't jump. Did you notice the soft female voice singing at 19:14 ??? It is so heart breaking what those patients and many more like them had to go through daily, the abuse is at more or less every asylum I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx ❤

Hello Sue:) Thanks for watching this one. We know it’s not what our subscribers are here for, but it’s an experience we really wanted to share. So, I went back and listened to what you mentioned with headphones and I do hear what you’re talking about. At first I thought maybe it was a truck passing, but that wouldn’t have the change in tones and pauses. Very interesting and good catch Sue!!!! We always knew they weren’t a welcoming place, but walking around there was something else. Seeing the locked units, so many beds with rails(used for restraints) the sheer number of rooms was surprising. Picturing the number of beds in their dormitories was eye opening too. How did anyone sleep well! Anyways, thank you for watching and take care ❤️❤️

@@AdventuresRUs My secret is that I tweak the audio on my W10 laptop and I have surround sound over ear gaming headphones. It is so sad how people and especially children were treated in asylums, it makes me ashamed to be a human being sometimes if that's what our species are capable of doing. Much love to you both and your family. xx ❤

Hi! An interesting video. There were definitely some piles of leftover filming gack, as well as the remains of sets. I was a film liaison in BC and I have spent many, many hours in the buildings of Riverview. Many times overnight. I was also the only person in them ( we had to lock up the buildings after the crews had gone). I get the urge to explore but be cautious because, amongst things just falling down, there is a fair amount of asbestos in buildings of that age, It is often chipped and worn which means any dust you breathe in could have asbestos in it. The other thing to remember there is that many areas have been decorated and redecorated many times by film crews, so the broken down look is just as likely to movie effects as reality. Stay safe

Hello! Thank you for watching, commenting and sharing what you know about the location. Yes, a few people have mentioned about there being stuff left by productions, like the one area with all the built in rooms. We knew about the asbestos and had another warning in that one section where it was all taped off with asbestos warning signs. Not good stuff, but fortunately most windows were open and we weren’t in there for very long.

At the 13 minute mark the walls are built of tv flats, using 1x4 and door skin. Leftover from a film or tv show. When we were kids telling someone they were from Riverview or Essendale was a common insult. Electroconvulsive therapy is still used today. Using the historical photos was nice. Thanks for another good video.

Hello Douglas:) Thank you for watching, taking the time to comment and share your knowledge. Ohh ok! We looked through photos of Riverview in their archives and in a few they showed a staff area with walls built inside of rooms, so that’s what we thought they were. But that explanation makes sense! Yes, it’s still used, but not nearly as often. I work in healthcare and it’s not common practice anymore. I read that there was a time where doctors were paid extra to use some of these treatments and it’s sad to think about all those ppl who suffered so they could have extra money lining their pockets.

We had a few spots where our audio cut out and then that slow motion part that was really random. Never had that happen before. In the video when we’re near that locked cell looking place, we saw two clouds appear one after the other and it wasn’t cold. You can see them in the video, we just didn’t point them out. Our son went before us and he said he had several videos with no audio at all, or it was just humming.. He also heard ppl talking and then lost his shit when someone sneezed behind him lol. I was here a few days ago but didn't try and enter without a respirator. I have explored the Crease clinic and East lawn solo in the past.. I experienced something inside Crease that would have gotten me admitted for evaluation 100 years ago, or probably even today..

We’ve heard of a few experiences there too and a couple of things happened when we were there. Two clouds appeared in front of us, both captured on camera in this video, problems w our electronics also captured in the video and someone mentioned they heard a lady humming a tune, which we later reviewed and heard. Our son went and heard ppl talking and then someone sneeze directly behind him. That was enough to have him running out of there.

@@punkbabexxI was working in film during Covid and was lucky to get the opportunity to prep the locations alone and do some exploring. Crease Clinic and East Lawn are locked up tight and have alarms. West Lawn is the most accessible if the entry hasn't been repaired yet. Riverview grounds are open to the public so you can go walk around outside the buildings as much as you want during the day if you want to scope things out. Just watch for security if you hop or crawl under the blue fence.

@@AdventuresRUsI never noticed your reply. I experienced all the same things except I didn't see a cloud. I seen and passed through a 5ft tall apparition that came through a doorway I was entering. I felt I was being stalked the whole day while working there and I was sure I seen something earlier in the day, but I was trying not to be bothered by it until we passed through eachother. Only ever told a couple other people with similar experiences

Old Riverview hospital insane assilem, the last patients were moved ovr a decade ago, i was hoping it would reopen to house all the dangerious out of control fentanyl addicts on the notorous east hastings area, and there was plans being drawn out to do just that, and then in the last year the land was reclaimed by the local native population, so the plans to clean up hastings permanently all went out the window...

Although the early treatments were barbaric closing these hospitals in the early 2000’s has lead to many people being incarcerated in provincial and federal jails where they get little treatment there is no 24 hour a day care there is no care on weekends for their mental health issues or break downs. These hospitals need to be re-opened with modern care and treatment. As a correctional officer I am expected to be a mental health counsellor as well as a peace officer, waiter, mediator and first responder I get paid less than a trades person or someone who has a far less dangerous and demanding job. People would be shocked to see what we are expected to deal with on a daily basis and would be shocked at how often we are injured both physically, emotionally and mentally and how often we run short staffed due to people being off due to stress.

Hello Scott, Can’t agree with you more. Unfortunately a large portion of our homeless population is also the result of the closures of psychiatric hospitals too. It’s very disheartening to see people struggle on the streets who need support that can only be offered in a hospital setting. Thank you for the work that you do. I, Chyanne, work in a hospital setting and we have huge portion of ppl who are patients who struggle with mental issues and addiction. Many would benefit from permanent residency in a facility. I’m from Ontario originally and although we do have a growing homeless population, it’s nothing like you see here and I believe it’s the direct result of these facilities closing their doors and there being very little support.

@@AdventuresRUs HI there, i live on the west coast, and am well aware of the places history, and the unprecedented fentanyl opioid epidemic when is now in its 6th year, I also know the province has tried almost everything they can think of to curb the epidemic, from clean needles to housing to safe drug supply etc etc and for the most part these programs have failed, because the addiction is so strong, So for addicts to get well they must have full cooperation in programs provided and most do not cooperate with this, which is why some are wanting this place to fully open up again getting hard core Addicts off the streets and into treatment, Although serious plans were in the works with the land, But unfortunately i just found out that the land was originally owned by the local first nation people, So the plans were unfortunately scrapped as the indigenous people now have a say in what happens with land, so again any plans to get people in therapy and housing there was just cancelled as the place possibly may become a native only healing Centre of some kind. So B.C may have to build another psychiatric hospital elseware, P.S One good thing about the place was around four years ago the main building with the big white columns and matching white stairs was used in a couple scenes a major Hollywood film staring Ryan Reynolds, DEADPOOL 2 the place is seen towards the end of the film with the big fight scene with the juggernaut mutant...

I hate to rain on your parade, but there are no ghosts haunting the halls of Riverview. I've been there hundreds of times over the last three decades, working on one film project or another. I've spent two full overnights 'dressing sets' in the Crease clinic, - the building that is supposedly the most haunted, begging for something to happen. Nothing. I've spent countless hours alone in just about every building on the site, as well as on the grounds and in the woods. It looks haunted, smells haunted, but alas....no ghosts. Any 'relics' being found are more likely from a film production leaving them behind than from any actual vintage hospital stock. Again, sorry to dispel the myth.

Well "feel" is one thing - I'll admit that Riverview is creepy, but haunted it is not. But I guess a tag line of "One of Vancouver's LEAST Haunted Locations" wouldn't get you the clicks. Also, Riverview is not an Insane Asylum as you call it - it's a hospital. And still operates as such. Some advice - stick with what you know.@@AdventuresRUs
