If you love collecting rocks and gems, this place is a must to visit for mineral collecting. We only spent a couple of hours here and only taken a few samples but would definitely come back here someday and explore the area a bit longer.

This is the Sunset Mine up the hill. just west of the Mary Kathleen townsite. It was basically a copper mine. When I was there I found Manganite on the road up to the mine. Heavy black mineral. At first, I thought it was Magnetite, but it wasn't magnetic. And it isn't Hematite as it produces a black streak. Yes, and lots of nice Calcite at the mine itself (white & pinkish) It makes a nice garden rock. And of course. a variety of copper minerals. The place has been fairly well 'picked over' though.

It's well picked over but for those with good eyes, there's still plenty to be had. Thanks for watching.

If you buy a uv flashlight the rocks will glow at night or in the dark at home.I recommend a good brand like fenix flashlights. Diamonds will glow blue in the dark. It may not always be diamond need send to a lab. 😁

Wow! I love it! I am addicted to rocks now LOL Liz you won't believe it I was in our granite gravel outside patio this afternoon because the weather is warming up and I was finding lone chunks little chunks maybe the size of a quarter pieces of Micah everywhere and they weren't there last year because before I started busting my own granite those are the gravel Pebbles I was using in my soil mix so I would have seen them. So I was outside collecting the mica pieces looking like a little kid on Easter Sunday looking for Easter eggs LOL I absolutely love going around my property now looking at all the boulders. And back in colonial times they separated property lines with rock walls and they are evident miles upon miles everywhere so I actually feel like I'm on a treasure hunt every time I go outside. There's nothing really as large in scale as you going out prospecting into these abandoned mines but I absolutely just love going and feeling the different textures and seeing the different types of rocks. It's amazing and addicting

Thanks for watching Mel. Before we go on the road, we usually research beforehand where we're going to go. May I suggest going online and look up different designated fossicking locations along the way. They usually have detailed maps to follow. Also check out Tourist information centers in the towns along the way. Good luck, happy hunting and stay safe.

Do you use a geiger counter? We found one of our large obsidian rocks emits gamma rays. On the lower end of high emission. We have obsidian all over here and the other large chunk does not emit any radioactive ray... Collecting at a uranium mine you might be getting some radioactive mineral as well.

Also have you did a history of areas with the report of the most astroids reported for that area or volcanos for that area and earthquakes?
