Abandoned with 20+ Kids: The Reality of a PLURAL WIFE in the FLDS

At only 17 years old, Ceci was assigned to become a plural wife and instant mother to 5 children before having her own child 5 months later. She then became 1 of 5 plural wives in this Fundamentalist Latter Day Saint (polygamous Mormon break off) community led by Warren Jeffs who is now in prison for CSA. Warren had a tendency to separate families for seemingly no reason and one night, she was told her husband and the other 4 wives were being sent away to “repent”, leaving the 20+ kids solely in her care.

I question almost everything and comply when it makes sense or is the right/best thing to do. Extra-Biblical rules are those most frequently abused in order to control others or acquire unlawful gain. For a time on my spiritual journey, I attended an Independent Baptist Church that I’d classify as a high control environment. Anyone who didn’t fit in with the 1950’s style white, American family was rarely accepted to join. Because they did do a lot of charitable work in the major city neighborhood as missionary outreach, there were many non-members who were welcomed--to a point! The longer I stayed, however, the more restricted I felt. I enrolled in their four month Bible Study and preparation for membership class. There was a lot of sexism to the point of ridiculousness. I recognize some of it here. The class was in the evening from 7:00-8:30, and a rule that women were not allowed out after dark without a man. As Summer turned to Fall, I was instructed not to drive to the church because a man would have to drive me home! At this time I was 34 years old, had a full time, professional job, had my own apartment, my own car, was self-supporting, and had been that way since age 18. I worked my way through both college and university. They were willing to look the other way, but just until they had found a husband for me! When I missed a class due to a business trip to Atlanta, the pastor was horrified that I’d flown into LaGuardia at night and went home on public transportation, ie. bus and subway. Any unescorted woman out at night was almost automatically a whore or asking for it. Women weren’t allowed to engage in competitive sports or strenuous activities lest we be spoiled for childbearing. For that reason, the men and boys did all the carrying, lifting, “heavy” work at church functions. We weren’t allowed to carry folding chairs, for example. At first, I thought it was chivalry, until this one girl who was a student at NYU got yelled at by the pastor’s wife. We thought she was joking, but she wasn’t. Two of her young sons ran over and took the chairs. I recall the girl looking at me and asking, “Who does she think does it when we’re by ourselves?” Then there was the clothing stuff, no uniforms like Amish or some of the Mormons, but dresses or skirts, only, and loose, prairie style dresses and jumpers were preferred to skirts and blouses. Business dresses or skirt suits were considered immodest because they were too form fitting, as in, you couldn’t wear them while pregnant without showing! Of course, women weren’t supposed to work outside of the home! A person like myself was supposed to live with her parents and help them if not married. Well, and if your parents are no longer living? Then you live with a male sibling’s family. I didn’t have a male sibling. The only sibling I had was shacked up with this guy who turned out to be wanted by the police in his country. I wasn’t invited and wouldn’t move in even I were! Then I got to questioning actual doctrine. The pastor could not give me any better answer than, “Because I am the pastor and have a degree from Bible Baptist Seminary.” IOW, he had three years of post high school education, not even the equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree! When I got to asking questions about Church history, he knew virtually nothing! In fact, he didn’t know history, period! Then there was his literal, Old Testament tithing requirement. I wasn’t a member and he wants everyone in the class to bring in a copy of the last year’s income tax! No way! That’s private information, besides, tithing was supposed to be on one’s honor according to the church by-laws. Apparently, tithing was at the honor of married, male, heads of families. For all others, the pastor and church board of directors determined the amount to tithe! That was the final straw. During the class break, I gathered up my stuff, went to the restroom, and departed out the side door. I never went back. I heard nothing from anyone at all for about six months until I received a form letter in the mail that my application for membership had been denied, and that I was not to have contact with church members unless I was willing to publicly repent after first meeting with the pastor and elders. It was as close to being excommunicated as one could come without being a baptized member. About a week after receiving the letter, I was sitting in the Duane Reade pharmacy waiting area when the pastor’s wife came in followed by five of their kids. I stood up to greet her and give over my chair because it was obvious a new baby was soon to be added to their family. I had nothing against her personally. If she liked her religious life, that was fine with me. She’s the one that married her husband, not me! Much to my amazement, she turned pale as a ghost, grabbed two of the kids, hissing, “Stand back,” and addressing me, “Repent, you heretic!” And she half herded, half dragged the children out of the store! Her behavior was actually noticed and commented upon by New Yorkers! I just shrugged my shoulders, shook my head, and sat back down.

Okay, here's a thought. I hope I can say it in a way that makes sense. Just because I wasn't on the Titanic doesn't mean that I can't understand fear, shock, panic, and grief. Our life circumstances are very different. Our feelings? Not so much. That's why your story is so important to us. You show us that we can start in a dark place and still build a life filled with light and love. Thank you for that.

Exactly, well said, trauma is trauma and there are no degrees of trauma from an individual perspective so many of us can learn and be inspired by Cesi even if we didn’t grow up in a cult 🙏💞🙏

Yes, you can understand fear, trauma, shock, panic and grief, but you can’t understand mine or Cesi’s, even if your experience was the same. You can imagine. A saying I deplore ‘I know how you feel’ because you don’t. I know you didn’t say that. These stories are important to us, but we can only imagine how it felt to live their experience. We can relate to trauma, but we can’t relate to Cesi’s trauma. We can have empathy for her. It is wonderful that she was able to build a life with new light and love. Everybody’s experience is their own.

@@deedawson6074 Truly, everyone's experience is their own. If it sounded as if I was trying to co-opt that then I expressed myself poorly. Each of us sees the world through a unique lens. Wow, she doesn’t even realize that her ex-husband is a predator too. He didn’t care what happened to the three boys, allowed them to start with her parents (1:09:29) but kept it a secret that he had their girl. He did that because she has “trading value” within the cult. Too many boys and there aren’t enough girls to go around. But he kept close reigns on her daughter. Not to mention that he married her when she was 16 and he was 35/36 and then took on another three wives within the next 7/8 years who were all clearly even younger than she was at the time of his subsequent “marriages”. As soon as she accepts that her husband is just as much of a predator as Warren Jeffs and his closest crew, the sooner she’ll understand why her husband tried so hard to get in good with them.

*Ceci* Firstly, congratulations on the growth and identity you've been able to reclaim and take charge of being out of the FLDS!! We can tell that you are such a good-natured, caring person.. so many people cannot achieve that even being born into 'typical' society. You are every ounce of strength and dedication that you and the children need/deserve. Being left to your own devices.. with ALL of the children like that... WOW. I can't imagine the stress/fear you must've harbored in these moments. But again, major props for taking things on and doing what needed to be done. Freedom is beautiful, let it ring loud.🖤 The hardships you've endured, emotional and otherwise, have clearly built you into such a strong woman. You and *Shelise* had a VERY important conversation regarding the lack of sex education that I just wanted to reiterate. *Keeping people 'obedient' and unaware of their own bodies is VERY destructive and breeds abuse. In being deprived of some of the most basic things, like identifying parts of your own body, these predators are practically feasting on children with their abuse..* - Never stop speaking up and being loud about it. Our voices must stand for those who experience suppression of their own words. - ~Much love and support as always 🖤 *(Also, Shelise, the outfit is fire mama!! 👏🔥)*

When I was 5 years old, my brother was conceived. My sister (2 years older than me) and I had questions, so our parents got us the book, Where Babies Come From. I remember the drawings were hilarious, though in hindsight there wasn't anything inaccurate in that book. Ten years later, I was SA'd by someone I had a crush on; definitions were just starting to shift on those subjects, & he didn't physically hurt me, but I knew what was happening & that it was not right. I can't imagine going through that with someone twice my age, who I sort of recognized, with no education or information about what to expect. Even if emotions aren't involved, it's such an intimate thing that not preparing you was just cruel. I hope he was at least considerate of you--and from what Shelise has taught me about purity culture he probably wasn't. Thank you for sharing that part of your life with us!

I've never really stopped to think about it in these terms, but the purity culture in Mormonism absolutely put me in an unfair disadvantage when I went through CSA as i didn't know what was happening. I didn't have the words for it, & couldn't articulate it even begin to explain what was going on. I was 7 when it started 9 when it stopped only because we moved to another state. 12 when I started to understand 15 when I first told an adult. In my 30's when I had done enough healing not to be carrying anger, shame & sadness over the violation of my childhood. The individual who had done this from my understanding was an ex LDS member.

Wow what a fighter! Sometimes the hardest part about being a mom is letting your kids grow up. By her letting her children know that they have choices and a voice that they can use even if they disagree with her, they can always speak up. That shows what an amazing mother she is. This stranger on the Internet is very proud of your progress. You are an inspiration to not only those that have been affected by cults or purity culture but to me, a single mom trying my best to raise my children right.❤

11:18 and 14:12 -- as she is describing her childhood with the original wives and their children all co-existing peacefully, to another wife being taken 10-15 years after the first marriages- this sounds just like a “TLC Sister Wives” rehash. Kody also took another wife decades after his first wives, and her introduction into the family tore it apart. He also allowed the newest, youngest wife, to almost ‘take over’ and started showing her a favoritism and love that he no longer graced his original wives with. This new, younger wife, could say and do things the other wives could not. She was given preferred spot that significantly disrupted the lives of everyone else; and he expected his family to just deal with it and pipe down because this newest wife was presented as “the soul mate.” 🤨. Is it just me seeing this, here? Am I reaching for straws or does anyone else a similarly that is hard to adequately describe?

I come from an Evangelical Christian background. I was adopted. The only thing I was told about sex was that I was to remain a Virgin until marriage. If I got pregnant I would give it up for adoption. That was my sex education. I gave birth to two children and didn't know I had "three holes" until I was in my 40 s when I got a severe yeast infection and took a mirror to myself. What a revelation! Really sad.

Oh no I'm so sorry this has happened to you... I'm not surprised that some parents are fine with this, but why did no friend of yours fill you in or just had these conversations with you? I would do that... it is so important to me that women around me know that they are normal and beautiful. More than one person has failed you.

For the mainstream LDS I grew up near your guest in southern Utah and as far as my mainstream LDS wedding it was short and quick and I didn’t get to wear my dress for my wedding either. Just photos for an hour and a short reception that was during Joseph smiths 200 birthday celebration on tv so not many showed up from my ward anyway. Looking back I was dissociating in a bad way especially not being very old at 20. Sex Ed from my parents was non existent. My husband was kind but also naive. We figured things out and had a ton of kids. He’s still brainwashed and I’m out. Best of luck to everyone here❤

I love seeing people - women especially - leave these monstrous religions and never look back at them with any regret at all! No one on this earth needs to have those types of people and/or institutions in their life. You seem to be doing well and don't have that haunted look so many seem to have. You did the right thing. 🥰 Hopefully others will come to realize they don't deserve such toxic situations.

Yes..I relate to what you said. But I understand indoctrination. Even with your parents you are indoctrinated. I lived thru the 60’s and there was a non conformist attitude. So I was lucky I could break from old world ideologies. We could rebel, which I commend this woman was able to do with no support. I’m so sick of hearing, “let’s go back to the good ole days”. Which good ole days? What specifics were good? Each generation had good and bad and we wouldn’t have progressed if not for rebels and break aways.

I know the FLDS never intentionally inbred like the Kingstons, but a lot do look similar. Tiny population I guess. Shes so brave, its always amazing to hear of women who got out and saved their children as well. It has to be so much harder than a young person with no ties. Have you tried reaching out to Rachel Jeffs? Warren's daughter who got out with 6 kids when they said the sa allegations were fake, he had done it to her

Ceci, I'm so blessed to get to hear your testimony! I remember how outraged I was when the Warren Jeff's story was being unveiled through the media. I often wondered how the rest of the people recovered. I'm eternally grateful to hear that your family got out from under the FLDS control. I was hoping to hear about your current Biblical beliefs and was saddened that they were not included. Of course when I realized that you've only been out for six years I can completely understand that you may still have the spirituality aspect up in the air. I will pray for you, your husband and children so that you each have wonderful God moments while he continues to love you through your healing. I do genuinely pray that Jesus is more than real to you, not only in the spirit but in the flesh too. Thank you again for sharing your story. God bless you

Listening to the Coltharp case, listening to THEM speak makes me so.... Shook. I didn't grow up in a cult. 38:19 I genuinely feel like some religious organizations keep things this way for this reason. Keep kids in the dark about their bodies and consent, right and wrong touch, etc, on purpose. They don’t want their kids being able to report. They don’t want their kids knowing these things are wrong. People are up in arms about teachers having curriculum around sex Ed and consent, but this is why we have it. Data shows that kids are not reporting because they don’t know how. We are trying to change that

I've always been very pro-polyamory and multiple parents for children in the sense of everyone is consenting to be in this relationship together and there's this agreement to parent together whatever the biology of the child may be, but I'm always confused by people who view polygamy (and specifically polygamist cults) in the same light as I view polyamory relationships. There's such a major difference in terms of consent, happiness, desire, parenting, wellness in the home, etc. Three or four people deciding to be together and deciding to have children and parent together is completely different from one man marrying multiple women and having as many children as humanly possible with them, let alone every other aspect of the relationships.
