Abbott & Costello, Errol Flynn - "Niagara Falls"

[From "Kovacs Corner" on KZfaq.com] - For a period of time in the early fifties, Bud Abbott & Lou Costello made frequent guest shots on one of the premiere comedy shows of it's day "The Colgate Comedy Hour". On this particular episode of the show, movie star Errol Flynn makes an appearance performing the vaudeville sketch "Niagara Falls". Playing the psychotic who is triggered into a rage by the mear mention of the waterfall, he goes berserk and starts pummeling Lou with each utterance. Obviously with his career on the skids from the ravages of drugs and booze, Flynn is terribly miscast in this burlesque classic. Sid Fields performing the same role on the boy's half hour syndicated show vastly outshines the once great Hollywood star. The scene also underscores the quote of actor Peter O'Toole from the movie "My Favorite Year" who incidently plays the Flynn-inspired character Alan Swann. He says, "Dying is easy...comedy is hard!"

Errol Flynn onstage never gave less than a Barrymore-calibre performance. Flynn here is a great comic "straight man" (Shakespearean style, a dignitary comically undermined) to Costello's victim buffoon. Flynn's comic timing and gestures (and as ever, inventiveness with his body as vocal and gestural instrument) are impeccable here, as incidentally in his many great film performances. I say Emmyworthy.

I get a kick out of this every time I see it. Errol looks great, happy and very vivacious. He also has that bit of the devil in him as he steps on Lou's leg at the end, and implies he'd like to strangle one of the Warner brothers. Damn, Errol was good! Of course, Lou and Bud were such masters at their craft that they could have a personal conversation while doing a skit, and could jump right back into character and deliver a line without it affecting their comedy timing one bit. I've never seen anyone, or any other comedy team who was expert enough to do that, and I don't think there will ever be anyone who will ever come close. These are three legendary performers who will be enjoyed and admired for centuries to come.

Yes ... Flynn in film flourishing his comic timing, as when as Robin Hood, he strides cockily into the lordly dining hall, large heavy fresh deer kill on his shoulders, and tosses it merrily (as if a featherweight) and fearlessly (as if the lord cannot lethally hurt him, which he can) onto the dais table. Then fast reflexively dodges the arrow. Ever a multifaceted master of his acting art. A joy forever.

(cont.) He did his own brawls because he could--as a 6' 2" natural athlete w/lightning reflexes and high skill, strength and energy, lifelong he rarely declined a challenge. And the challenges that mattered to him (as for example, geographical and oceanographic exploration) were those he set for himself ... likely to equal his marine professor father's greatness. Flynn was fine in this, though he nearly cracked up near the end - you can hear him stifling a laugh. That wasn't unusual for people who worked with Lou Costello because he ad-libbed compulsively and was always catching co-workers off guard. Glenn Strange finally went to the producers of A&C Meet Frankenstein and asked if they couldn't get Lou to be serious so they could get through the scene where he ends up on the Monster's lap. There's an out-take floating around that gives an idea of how much fun they had.

"Slowly I Turned" is of indeterminate origin in vaudeville (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slowly_I_Turned), but it was given new life on TV and movies by the likes of these geniuses (what a treat to watch them -- and Errol Flynn!), the Three Stooges and Lucille Ball. Even Danny Thomas, Alan Alda, the inimitable Milton Berle and more recently Steve Martin rode that hoary old horse. The most durable routine ever? At least, a terrifically strong contender.

@@joebloggs8636 I didn't really know the whole story until I looked it up, and was richly rewarded. Think about another famous routine: "Who's On First." I can't imagine anyone but Abbot and Costello doing it. They MUST have invented it, right⸮ Wrong! While they certainly made it famous, so that it's associated with them in nearly everybody's mind, "Who's On First" "is descended from turn-of-the-century burlesque sketches that used plays on words and names. Examples are "The Baker Scene" (the shop is located on Watt Street) and "Who Dyed" (the owner is named "Who"). In the 1930 movie Cracked Nuts, comedians Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey examine a map of a mythical kingdom with dialogue like this: "What is next to Which." "What is the name of the town next to Which?" "Yes." " You may read all about it in Wikipedia, a bottomless font of the arcane: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who%27s_on_First%3F Enjoy!

What could have been added to this sketch? An actual "slapstick". For those who are not aware of the device, it was two thin pieces of wood which weere attached at one end. During a vaudeville performance, a stagehand would "slap" the two pieces together and create (what else?) a slapping sound. This would juice the comedic stage performance. Today a sound engineer "sweetens" the action with a sound effect in post production.

Flynn "couldn't even make the grade to get in the military" because of his long suffering from malaria, which he got as a young man, boldly sailing the southern Pacific seas and exploring jungles ... where most others feared to tread. In countless of his swashbuckling films, he demonstrated inconfutably obviously his virtuoso superman military prowess in swordfights, rope swings from ship masts and trees, jumps from high stone castle steps and climbs there up. His machisimo was lifelong, inborn.

This appears to be from the Colgate Comedy Hour 1/13/52. When I was a kid the local station had a package of films they showed over an over again and about a dozen of them were Errol Flynn films and another dozen were A&C. They we both huge favorites among the kids of my neighborhood. Everything would stop when either were on and we'd all congregate at one house to watch. I understand Flynn was pals with A&C, who lived near him and there they are together.

WHAAAT? Flynn was the opposite of this behavior! He was usually the one being 'tapped on the shoulder' by drunks looking to beat the screen tough guy. By his own admission, he tried to talk the guy out of fighting by buying him a drink, etc. This didn't always work, as Flynn was in countless barroom brawls, but he tried to avoid them if he could. More to the point, in his biggest hits, he nearly always played a lighthearted fellow, eager for a good time, and his comic timing was evident. As for missed cues or dropped dialogue, this was par for the course in early television. I mean, he was working with A&C, not Fredric March. N.B.: I ain't at all upset.

Errol did something stupid, Lou lost it, and with one punch knocked him off a bar stool and on to the floor, out like a light. Lou was an expert boxer, an athlete, and a very strong man - not to be messed with in any way. But he was also a Saint.

+bjbell52 Oh thanks. I knew about him being star basketball player in Paterson, but I didn't know they hired someone to teach him how to shoot hoops for that movie. After Lou made that shot I'll bet the teacher they hired must have been stunned. I can just see Lou going over to the teacher and giving him a few pointers. Ha! Thanks again for the great story.

Find the Lou knocked out Errol Flynn with one punch thing very hard to believe....I have read several bios of both and never heard of this happening....care to quote your source for what you're spreading??

@@diceguyg3799 Flynn was more apt to fall off of a bar stool than to be knocked off of one.

The three Stooges did a much funnier version. I love Abbott and Costello. I'm not saying they aren't legends.

Flynn may have been a competent actor and a great "lady's man" but he lacks the comic latent to bring off this ancient routine. It would have been better to let Abbott and Costello do it themselves but they had to work Flynn into the routine to show what a good sport he was, I guess. Even so, this well-worn burlesque sketch shines through.

I like Abbott & Costello but this one isn't very well acted out/ actually it sucks. The three stooges did it far better. A&C took a lot of material from the 3 stooges but not nearly as good/funny. But I do consider their "Who's on first" as one of the best routines of all time. The stooges did this about 10 year earlier in 1944 in "Gents without cents"

This is a classic vaudeville routine from the '20s. Everybody did it and no one knows for sure who really originated it.. It certainly wasn't the Three Stooges or Abbott and Costello.

This was funny until the end, WHY did Errol Flynn step on Lou's leg like that? It must have hurt and was uncalled for!

Errol Flynn doesn't seem to have any comic timing. This is flat - after watching the Stooges do it.
