I am a 6th generation Arizonan. This is deplorable and FULLY avoidable. In Arizona you drink water, lots of it, as often as you can. If someone offers you water you say "YES!". As a member of the Phoenix PD this man has seen firsthand the effects of heat exhaustion and should have received training on how to avoid it/spot it/treat it. The fact that he took her up Camelback in the middle of the day, with high humidity, and no water is inexcusable. Her friends are right to be pissed that he left her, even if she said "you go on up without me" he should have stayed with her. Heat exhaustion makes you stupid, your brain stops functioning and rational thought ends. He ended up leading this poor girl, who he was supposed to care for, to her death, and then put at risk the dozens of searchers who looked for her for hours. He should have taken her to Papago Park if they wanted some nice photos and a short hike..... it's all just.....senseless. Tragic.
@katherine1681

Maybe it was intentional. Perhaps she didn't give him what he wanted the night she arrived, so he figured this would be the perfect revenge where he knew there would be no accountability as it would appear to be a tragic accident. Not bringing water sounds beyond stupid. It's downright malicious. This guy's a monster in disguise. Police departments seem to attract his kind everywhere.

In arizona the mornings are sometimes 30% humid and in the 90's. About a week ago it was over 50% at 9am and over 90 degrees. This girl was from mass. He is a freaking moron. He hiked it a ton of times so it was not like he never did it and would miss out getting to the top. Something truly stinks about all this. Water and lots of it is so important here. I live in PA but have been here in arizona since December, also I am a very very avid hiker and even still my body finds this heat hard to acclimate to.

I was on a hike in Hawaii the heat was extremely hot. I had to turn around because I was too tired. I had anxiety due to being anemic, and exhaustion from to the heat. No one in the group cared to turn back with me when I told them. They gave me this “party pooper look”. Thank god I made it back to the bottom. Sometimes you have to be around the right people that truly have compassion and not just selfish for their own personal hiking goal just to reach the top of the peak.

How to get away with negligent manslaughter? Be a Phoenix Officer that invites a woman out to hike a trail in July starting at 10:30 AM with no water. Then when she dies, your buddies at the Phoenix PD can cover for you and say "no foul play." I'm not saying he murdered her in the first degree. I am saying this is equivalent to drunk driving when you kill someone. That cop made a conscious decision to take a visitor hiking in the heat of the desert with no water. What Arizonan does that? And he's a cop. Meaning a first responder. I don't want this guy out there protecting our safety, he's a menace. How does he still have a job? Why would other cops ever want to work with him? He's already changed his story on this one. He's lied before. How can he testify in court and have a jury believe his testimony?

@Tranequious Jones he is right. She should have had electrolytes with her(poweraid or something) or water to last the whole hike at the very least. And he should have gone with her back down the mountain...he never should have let her go by herself. He has lived here for 14 years...he should know better. And honestly, if you take one look at her, she doesn't look capable to hike az this late in the day in the summer sun...yes...LATE. they should have started a lot earlier or gone much later...heading back at 1030 or starting at 1030 either way...that's two hours too long in unforgiving conditions without proper supplies. I walk and hike for hours most months here, but I take a break during our summer months except for at night because I have no interest in tempting fate. Our sun here is not forgiving. He knows this. He was showing off, this is not caring for the person he was responsible for bringing up that mountain. She should never have been left. Especially since she isn't from around here and her body isn't acclimated to our harsh conditions. And no water?????? Was he drunk, high or just stupid???? Like I said...AZ sun is not forgiving. One mistake...yous dead friend. This isn't the movies or the internet or a video game...you don't get more than one life...you don't take precautions our here, you may not make it back alive my friend. Period.

@@11Ash11 Oh please stop being so damn dramatic.. Arizona is not hotter than Blythe and or the Coachella Valley in California.. The girl just wasn't use to that much heat and her body responded negative to it.

@@mamadouaziza2536 it's not dramatic; It's common sense. And most people these days lack it...clearly. It was a 104 at 1030. It was about to get a whole lot hotter. We can hit 120s here in a blink of an eye. Dry heat. No moisture at all. He was a cop. He knows how many people get heat stoke (and die) on a regular basis here...and it is sometimes even the locals that get caught in situations they didn't prepare for...due to overestimating their abilities and (like you) having an ego about it. They should have had packs with them. Everyone I know who is local for generations and go hiking regularly...they even bring safety survival packs. It's only just a hike here in the winter, and even then you better be careful because our Temps drop and that's a whole other beast to prepare for... during the summer...you better know what you're doing.

They're both likely to be responsible for her death. The second officer probably a cover as supposedly Desdin is married. He lured her out there, maybe some type of drug 💉 or pills and the two officers had sex with her. The next day they "go hiking" and use that as the cover story knowing she was drugged, and had no water. Not sure how long the drug would stay in her system to be traceable or it may have been something like sleep water.

I remember when my sister was 19 she started talking to a guy she met online. They were talking for awhile and even my mom spoke with him a couple of times. He was a fire fighter and my mom was excited for my sister because he seemed to be very successful. Then she showed me a picture of him. I told her “how old is this dude he looks like he’s 33 years old?!” And she said he’s only 22. I told her there’s no way he’s 22... at that time they were planning on him flying up to come meet her. But after I kinda freaked out and told her she needs to research him before meeting this guy because I have bad vibes he’s not telling her the truth... she later asks him to show her a picture of his I.D. And he sends her a picture but clearly took sharpie to write a different date on his birthday. Then she got suspicious and started searching his information. Turned out he was 34 years with a wife and daughter... and not a fire fighter. She immediately blocked him and called me thanking me for my advice. Idk what his intentions were but he told her all these lies that he would take care of her and she can come live with him without having to work. If an officer has an incident that places their credibility or conduct as questionable, they're put on it. Think about that. Update; As of today 8/7, I've read that he's changed his story. First, he said that he knew the trail well. Now it's been reported that he's claiming he got lost. Pft. I would say it's time to take a look at his computer. I came in shorts and sneakers, but she arrived in high heels, a dress, designer pocketbook, long painted fingernails and wearing gobs of makeup. I had to hold her hand the entire time so she wouldn't fall and she seemed shocked at the beautiful spot being what I considered a simple challenge. People's ideas of what "the outdoors" is supposed to be and judging from her attire, she probably thought we would be going to a park with paved paths and picnic tables. We made it fine through the date, but we had very different pre-conceptions of what the "outdoors" is like. There was no second date. The woman in this video looks like an "indoors girl" to me and was not the least bit prepared for the hot, dusty and rugged environment. He should have been much more of a gentleman, but being a "gentleman" and using "common sense" seem to be sorely lacking in the new millennium.

Stereotypical Phoenix PD behavior. When I heard he abandoned her when she was feeling heat stroke to continue up on his hike, it didn't surprise me. That cold, distanced, lack of any compassion of a classic Phoenix metro cop. Even a fool would know the right thing to do was not leave a person who have never experienced Phoenix Summer climate and unfamiliar with Camelback Mountain ALONE! His negligence resulted in her death. He is a disgrace, given his job description is supposed to be to 'serve and protect'. But in reality, today's cops only 'search and suspect'. I don't know....something doesn't add up and smells of foul play IMO. She had her cellphone and could have called him if lost, or feeling weak. Autopsy must be performed for blunt force trauma, strangulation. As he is suspect No.1 as standard procedure for investigations.

She's from Boston which is basically sea level and even being physically fit does not prepare you for the effects of higher altitude. Boston is 43m above sea level and Phoenix is 331m so her body would already have been struggling with the difference in altitude. Camelback is 825m and that is a massive adjustment that takes weeks to really get used to. No water and leaving her behind is irresponsible and disturbing, who does that ? @@katherinepoltoratzky6068 Honey did your parents teach you that the saying, "have your back", is said of ppl. you trust that will be there for you no matter what not about strangers you meet on the internet. I felt bad that you have not learned basic information about life in general at this point in your life.
