This happened to me in Central FL a few years ago. Citizens forced me to go with a new insurance firm with no history of claims and questionable reserves. They failed within 2 years and I went back to Citizens for my 1885 double wide. The State approves no name, no history new insurance firms that then lack reserves for the first big catastrophe and then fail starting the cycle all over again.

I paid my house off 15 years ago. The day after the mortgage was paid off I received a certified letter from my insurance company raising my rate from $550/year to $3600/year !! I dropped them and put $1000/year in an interest bearing account and now have enough to practically build a whole new house. If the home gets damaged, (and it does) I pay the cost out of pocket and it gets fixed much faster, with a LOT less hassle. Insurance companies = the bank = crooks. The most liberating thing one can do is to pay off the house !!! Your blood pressure will thank you 😊

We received the same letter. Went from $14k with Citizens (which was $7k last year) to $25k with Slide insurance 😮 and my husband missed the part where you have to respond! I caught it and we were able to stay with Citizens. Absolutely insane!

they did me like that in the rick scott days serval times .Back then you had to mail back the refusal and they always tried to say they didn't get it. I actually had every letter sent via post office signature receipt so they had to sign a stub and it was mailed back to me . I had a physical signature from their office backed up from the postal service to show they got it so they had to change it right back. Protect yourself or they will destroy you

I went to an insurance broker because Progressive raised ours from 2200. To 4700. Got a great deal from another insurance for 2500. With better coverage. AND ITS NOT CITIZENS

Citizens is also a slimy company. I had a house fire in 2007 and was on Citizens and it took over 5 months for them to pay the claim. And the only reason they paid is that I contacted my state representative and the governor's office and both came down on them. I still remember the adjuster coming to me instantly after the governor's office contacted him and he was like, almost in tears whining about why I called the governor's office and such. But , I finally got paid by Citizens after that. Citizens was just trying to wait me out and after a certain amount of time, apparently an insurance company can just walk away from a claim. Anyway, that was what I was told. So, they were trying to not pay the claim. What makes me angry about the present situation is that people in North Central Florida, most all of who have never had a hurricane related claim are also suffering the same fate as the fools who live near either coast and are always having hurricane related claims. I can understand the high insurance rates and difficulty in getting insured along the coast, but in Lake City or Gainesville or Ocala? Come on, seriously.

This is insane, they should be required to send these letters return receipt so they can prove that you got the notice. Also commercial etiquette requires 3 notices, 1) notice, 2)default right to cure, 3) notice of default. This should be deemed unenforceable without proper commercial process.

Slide billed our mortgage company over $12,000 after UPC went under!! had to fight to get $ back!!! Got insurance for less than $3500!

Happen to me when my gym closed down. They transferred my gym membership 20+ miles away at a different Gym with a completely different name. No way associated with the one closed. They got 2 payments from me before I caught it on my bank statements. They said you should of received the email. Yet..... when I signed up I used my school email , for which was no longer in service. Scumbags

Not much of a surprise here. Insurance, in general, is nothing more than a legalized version of a Mob run protection racket. You have no choice and they know it. So they gouge you for as much as they figure you'll tolerate without going to someone else. If you've been a customer for years, they stop caring if you leave them or not. Our insurance went from $2500 in 2016 to $15k by 2019. Fortunately we own outright and we’ve self insured since. I’m not sure how people are managing w these crazy rates. We’re in the Fort Lauderdale area for anyone wondering.

Same f'ck story. I live in Deerfield Beach on FL SE coast. Insurance went from $3,500 to almost $12,000 in a little over a year. I am putting my home on the market if I cannot get this resolved. This is really sad. Price "of" Paradise ... I am leaving Florida, taking advantage of my "thick blood" (and longing for 4 seasons), and heading back north. I rather freeze than get "screwed" in paradise.

Correct me if I'm wrong but in Florida, you can't hire an out of state contractor prompting you little choice to choose. Talk about unionized contractors of Florida and their repair estimates are outrageous while insurance companies have to pay them and pass on the increased premium to you.

But he would stay with Citizens since he is at the 20% gap. Meaning if your Citizens policy is $2,500 premium Citizens adds 20% to that $2,500 and if that Sum is cheaper than offer they will stay with Citizens and Citizens will not change your policy either but if the other offer is cheaper from that +% premium you have NO choice to get the other company. HOWEVER those may and may not be the rate since those letters are going out months before renewal date.

Shopping around can help. Some estimates i got for h.o. insurance were double than what I pay now

I would say that it might be time for some of these people to move out of Florida, but the rest of the country doesn't want their politics and problems so they should stay there. I thought that FL legislators put the brakes on this by not allowing your homeowners insurance company to DROP you without cause unless they found you another company willing to INSURE you at a COST not MORE than 20% above THEIR existing RATES?? Can someone please explain when this CHANGED??

My insurance was $1800 a year back after Andrew on a $60 k house. So now the prices of house and inflation has to figure into it.

In my part of the world (California) the insurance commission is on the consumer's side. I can't say that about Meatball and his government. I just got my annual homeowners insurance renewal notice. My policy went up about 15% to about $1,500 for the year, plus about another $450 for earthquake. This is for a single family home built about 24 years ago that is fully paid for. Things went up, but not by devastating amounts that Florida is dealing with.

So the new rate 8s unreasonable then goes on to explain how he is worried the insurance company is taking on too much risk with claims possible in the billions. He just explained a part of the reason for insurance hikes but evidently does not listen to himself.

Forget the insurance bill, throw it in the garbage and fix your house yourself, I have been going with no home insurance for 30 years and with the savings eat steak with the money, last year I had 50.00 worth of roof damage from hurricane Ian, those type of storms are over hyped

I find it hard to believe that you have to opt out or it will go into effect. That cannot be true in any legal way.

My friend owns her home right out and no longer has home insurance. I told her from what I have seen in the news to forget getting any because she can not afford it at age 70. Her home is over 50 years old. I said to her save the money and pay for a new roof herself. It would be cheaper for her to save that money. If she dies to leave that same money to her daughter to fix that roof before she moves in. This is the only answer to this rising costs of insurance. She can have the roof fixed then get a policy according to FL State standards. But if they come in at a higher rate she too may not be able to afford homeowners ins either. I see these rising rates as a way to make the rich richer. If the person leaves the state of Florida that is another way to pick up the home for a vacation rental for the rich. It is no longer senior friendly in FL anymore.

I would not worry about this new company. Its clear to see their plan. charge maximally - amass billions in revenue. Then when next hurricane arrives, file bankruptcy. With all top people sipping drinks in fancy resorts.

Florida valuations have gone through the roof. It's no longer the cheap retirement dream of years ago. What killed Florida is that it got way too popular with the rich northern crowd. If I were this dude and not required to have insurance because of a mortgage I would self insure. No way I am paying that much to protect an average house. I'd take my chances.

Slimy company and outrageous rates. A new underfunded insurance company? What could possibly go wrong? We moved from the gulf side of Florida in 2016. Never had a problem with insurance costs or hurricanes in our area for 15 years. Flash forward and hurricane Ian comes through a couple of years ago and every home in our old neighborhood had 5 feet of water in it. I can only imagine what the insurance rates are for where we used to live. We now live in a state where our homeowners insurance is around $700 annually. People will move from places they can simply no longer afford. If they can find one that is. Remember, it’s the economy stupid.

Take 14000 and by a motor home instead and live in that during emergency hell at that rate you could by a new home in just a few years

Yeah, just got one of these deals today 04.01.24, [COMPUTER-ACTION-DONE- TODAY !]. Citizens was offering a renewal in Sept 2024 of $2398 and Slide $3245. Stuck with Citizens which was generally a $200 increase from 2023. I'll see what's going on before the renewal, maybe I'll get lucky.Who the F knows ??

Not disagreeing with the outrageous increase, but the title of the video is incorrect - 4.3 times is a 330% increase, not 430%. Just like a doubling in price is a 100% increase, not 200%.

But it's so warm and nice. I pay less than a thousand per year for insurance.

If Slide is the default, of course there will be some who fail to opt out, and they could be stuck with a bill that's impossible for them to pay. It's a sneaky way to do business.

People who do not have a mortgage are not obligated to have home insurance. For those who are looking for cheaper rates, discuss changing your policy to liability only, or other options other than a whole umbrella policy. I am going to be changing over my rental property to liability only as well, which my insurance company quoted at $500 a year. Also look at what your lot/property would sell for in the situation where your home was a total loss. You still can sell the lot or rebuild a much smaller home on the lot you already have. If you drop your policy, put that insurance payment into a separate savings/checking account and let it accumulate in case you do get some tree/roof/other damage that must be fixed.
