While teachers have always been a moral and somewhat of a parental figure... They are now being asked to carry on way too many roles and it is not right.... So many parents use the schools to discipline, diagnose, feed, babysit, parent, guide, etc.....

I wish every teacher would go on strike at the same time. Maybe then the government would pay teachers a livable salary.

I taught in Florida for exactly 4 years. It is where I began my 23-year teaching career which, thankfully, I have ended for other opportunities. I was paid so little in Florida that after I paid my car payment, rent and utilities, I could NOT afford to maintain my car and thus the engine completely died. (just under 29k back then in the very late 90s) I couldn't afford to pay on my student loans and had to defer them. Teaching in Florida provided me with no future so I left.

The "raises" they gave New Mexico teachers looks good to the public. But behind the scenes they are now laying off teachers, because they really didn't have the funding to give the raises in the first place. So, they are laying off teachers and support staff, which will mean higher student:teacher ratios. We already do not have enough staff to run the school efficiently, and I am starting to think the raise is worth it, and I just might quit anyway! I don't want 30 kids in my classroom, with little support. I do not want to have to fill out unnecessary paperwork in my "free" time, after work. I refuse to take my work home. And I will continue to do so. They can fire me if they choose to!

This is happening all over the United States with educators- the educators are leaving their careers to find other careers that pay more. This is a real problem in the USA.

The biggest problem a teacher has to face is culture. A culture that does not value education. This is not only the administrative body that does not see fit to pay teachers a reasonable rate, but also parents and students. In the district I worked in mostly everything is available to students and parents online. This includes policy, full lessons, study notes, assignments, and grades. Student and parents (if they are paying any attention at all) are informed of this regularly. Despite this and individual meetings with every student I had and contacting parents multiple times or attempts to do so. I still have many students failing simply due to large amounts of missing work that large amount of class time was given to complete. Students choose to avoid work and play on social media as they know even if they are caught there are no repercussions. No one is held accountable especially the students who know they can simply blame the teacher when in fact choices were made by administration and parents to hold students themselves at no accountability. That is not the way a effective system of education works. Everyone is to have a share of the accountability/responsibility for students education. With teachers having it all pinned on them and no one else having to answer for the failures in the system no wonder teacher are saying they have had enough.

Why are parents and governors used as substitutes? They are not certified nor have teacher licenses, nor even have substitute training. This is what’s wrong with this country. The govt and the public thinks anybody can just replace teachers just like that. Then why do teachers need teaching licenses? And to be taught by unlicensed and uncertified people, kids are not getting the quality education they deserve. Which means the whole purpose of the education system is really to babysit not to promote academics.

You'd think that parents would support compensating their teachers, after having to experience for themselves how difficult it is to teach students. For months, we heard from parents complaining that their kids were at home. Where are those parents supporting the idea of more money being invested in our teachers, more parents standing up and saying," teaching is tough. These teachers are awesome performing a tough job. They need to get paid."

So just bandaids instead of fixing the problem, sounds about right.

It's not a livable wage - because the field is dominated by women ......... same thing with a lot of people in the restaurant industry ......

the districts do not seem to value retaining teachers that have gained worked experience. this is shown by the fact that there are no performance based or general yearly pay raises.

They got to do better they need to give these teachers a livable wage because they deserve it.. no wonder many teachers leaving the profession, finding higher paying jobs, which will exacerbate matters namely creating a teacher's shortage.

Go figure ! Isn't this the same state where I saw one teacher get fired because she disagree d with the 'students get the 50% rule just for walking through the front door rule?' also this is the us where we would rather spend billions military equipment that fail rather than education! 🤷🙅✌️👏

I like the idea of the governor signing up to volunteer sub but if the schools are anything like where I live, that offer won't be valid for long!

And yet, none of the proposals talk about increasing pay in a legitimate way for all teachers.

Asking people who aren't trained to be teachers to be substitutes only hurts the students who aren't being taught by someone who went to college for 4 to 6 years to learn how to teach.

Truer words were never spoken. Then they increase wages for NEW teachers so that inexperienced teachers come in but experienced teachers leave.

Lack of discipline and ever wanning standards of socially acceptable behavior. . Money helps but ultimately it won't matter

A lot of people don't realize that teachers don't just teach kids academics. They are managers too. What other job has entry level positions where 23-year-olds manage 25-30 people? People who's brains haven't fully developed and you work with 25-30 new people every single year.

The goal is to get as many new and unprepared teachers into the school as possible and push out the experienced ones so that administration can fully mold and keep their thumbs over the faculty.

A no-brainer

If there were more men in teaching then this wouldn't happen. I left because the women just kept doing more and more and more but weren't getting the financial rewards. I was also asked to do more. When I refused I became a pariah. I went back to running my own business.

Wages need to go up $27 , after 3 year of working at school, pay raise $30 /hr.

WHAT WE NEED IS STUDENTS NOT KNOWING HOW TO READ OR DO MATH AND GO OUT TO THE MILITARY AND BE AT THE NUCLEAR BUTTONS OF THE US.

Guys honestly think back on all your grade school teachers and you'll likely notice that you had a small hand-full of good teachers and a majority of terrible teachers.

UNFAIR WAGES! Public school teachers make more than the fair market value of teaching services, as set forth by LEGITIMATE PRIVATE SCHOOL EDUCATORS. Most of the people, being taxed, to pay public school teachers, WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM.

Only government oversight, no Unions, no pensions, allow for labor hour only contracting, work a minimum 2020 hours a year and permit performance based (parents & gov oversight) firings you got a deal. Teachers will make bank if their any good, because only the best will survive in this system and thrive. Work when you want, have all the babies you want, come and go as you want. But it's up to you to get your own health care and save for retirement.

The Average salary for a teacher is roughly 61k/year roughly 14k above the national average for everyone. Thats not bad for a part time job.

yeah and the rest of us don't work multiple jobs or bring work home the only difference is all other professions are full time employees not part time employees. Please remember the teachers Union pushed to close schools and keep them closed during the "pandemic"..

Over paided daycare workers (Teacher) cry every year for more pay. But they only work 9 months of the year for 60k year. No daycare worker( Teachers) are required to take work home with them. Prove me wrong. There are many other fields of work go find a new job.
