For decades, Native Americans have felt the lasting trauma of Indian boarding schools and fought to find healing. Efforts are underway to identify the true scope of the abuse.

This really devastates me. I wish I knew more about my history and it is a huge goal of mine to learn who I am and where I came from. Looking at their faces I see several family members in them. From my mother to my grandfather to my cousins. I pray they get the justice they deserve

My elderly family members were for forced into boarding schools. They gone now but their stories are with me. It hurts because they didn't deserve this.

Americans want to make reparations to certain groups, but they forget that the native population was treated worse that any group of people in history. Our government owes them 10 Times more that ALL OF THE OTHER GROUPS combined! Very few people in government, the media, wealthy people, or churchs have stepped up. It’s not something most people think about. Maybe if the media drummed it into our brains,like they do some other issues!

My beloved grandma, was in a Catholic run boarding school. Instead of an acedemic education. She didn't know how to read or write, but she sure could sew, clean and cook. Shame on you, for not giving this wonderful woman a chance at life. She was always a slave.

I am my grandmother's name sake ( my dad's Mom) She was taken from Big Cove, (Eastern band cherokee), Cherokee NC. She was Taken to Carlie PA. My father also went to eight different boarding schools across america.

In Tahlequah Oklahoma in a residential school they put 45 children from the age of 6 to 19 in a building lock them in and said the whole building on fire that’s residential school

I have enough native blood to be considered Native but I don't believe fairness will come to people our grandmother was stolen and put in orphanage but thanks to God she was finally saved and to me she was the nicest woman I was the youngest grandchild in the family hometown other relatives lived away, and my mother was stolen by government said has TB and she didn't they took her to Fort Stanton New Mexico the kicker is a TB hospital was maybe 30 miles away but she got taken to Fort Stanton I guarantee it would be denied but I know my family history because I wanted to know where we belong and to hear the heartbreaking stories they went thru

As a Filipino, I cannot imagine the horrors that these young indigenous kids went through in these boarding schools. However, my heart and my prayers go out to each and every child and their families who had to endure the violent prejudices that the despicable American Government imposed on them back then and the present day.

I'm learning about this in school right now, and the whole history breaks my heart. I have very little connection to my Cherokee ancestors, but I've been working hard at educating myself more and more about the true history of Native Americans.

My heart just aches over this. I never learned of any of this (of course) in our history books. Ironically, when 1883 was released this past year, I watched it and it got me wanting to learn more about the Native Americans, and I came across all of this. I’m horrified by what “America” and our forefathers did to the Natives of this country. It is despicable, and I’m just ashamed. Truly ashamed.

This was so devastating to watch. One thing that really struck me was that it took them years to negotiate to return some of the children to their tribes. Why is the word “negotiating” even an option? ALL of the children need to be returned their families. I cannot even begin to feel the devastation of not having my child with me.

My grandfather always told us that his father my grant grandfather was in a border school in pa and that was why he was so mean to everyone but he tried to teach what he remembered to his son's but only my grandfather took the time to teach us about what he learned from his father.

The bill only offers a miniscule of money to buy back their own land. When a single family home of 3-5 bedrooms is around $1,000,000 their offer would only provide a down payment... doesn't begin the beginning. Note, the first codified written discrimination laws in California were against Native Americans and Latino Americans: they couldn't attend schools and parks or theatres with whites; forbidden to drink or enter establishments that sold alcohol, etc. Brown vs. the board of education was preceded by decisions against California's discrimination laws such as not allowing native Americans to attend schools for white; they even had to walk by schools closest to their homes to attend the schools for children of color, such as in South Gate, Los Angele California. Without those ruinlgs, Brown vs. Board of Educ might have not happened; except California ignored them or treated issues with disparity and individually. The parents had to stand up against Educ Board and individual educators & principals.

Many children were saved thanks to those schools, they should be grateful that they had the opportunity to be educated and civilised. Everyone forgets the brutality those children would have endured in the aboriginal communities.
