For roughly a century, the United States government forced Indigenous children to attend boarding schools far from their families and communities.
Hundreds of thousands of children were placed in institutions across the country, starting in the late 1800s and continuing into the 1970s.
The government’s goal was to prevent the continuation of Indigenous societies, attempting to strip the children of their cultures and punishing them for speaking their languages.
Those running the schools abused many children, and an unknown number never came home.
In June 2021, the federal government announced for the first time that it would investigate former boarding schools, including possible sites where children could be buried.
Fault Lines speaks with the descendants of boarding school students and those who survived the institutions themselves to learn how they are trying to heal from this trauma.

As a native of India, i cannot begin to even fathom this. India was the first country to protect indigenous rights of tribes, and we cannot even begin to imagine such horrific atrocities meted to the Natives of North America. We condemn such systematic genocide of a peaceful people.

The same has been done to all indigenous peoples...across the whole entire Americas (North, Central, and South) and all accompanying islands...as well as Siberia-sweden&norway, also Australia, and most of Africa.....Where ever the roman catholic church and it's break off denominations (mormons, evangelicals, baptists, etc) have touched, they did the same thing...while in Stallion's case, for Siberia for the Saamii and accompanying indigenous peoples, it was extreme atheism....So, outside of Russian's being extreme atheists, the rest of the world has suffered under catholic rule...And even in russian case, they still had extreme influence from the methodist church (which is the church the Catholics broke from originally, anyways) ......denounce extreme religion...no religion should every be supere, all deserve a place on the sacred wheel of life, equal to one another...something even european Templar Knights understood, the whole point of the round table, is seen around the world, to people's who eventually realized we are equal and moving with one another...

I heard a small bit about the graves found on the news a few years back, and I thought it was one school in Canada.. now after learning all this from many surviors speaking out, I can understand how first nation tribes have stuggled to thrive after the 1900's, but I am so glad for the elders teaching the young ones about the traditions and the language now, cause this is the most beautiful wonderful teachings and truths of our society and our world! Thank you for making documentaries telling these stories!

I'm alive an existing because a woman Named Rosita and a Man named Paul survived the Los Angeles Sherman Indian School. My Great grandparents were survivors . Our land is Los Angeles. Yet we're not even Federally recognized. We have no land no language no religion. The mission system in California was a Genocide for Natives. San Gabriel Mission is a Land filled with unmarked graves and souls. We are the Tongva People our land is the Coasts of Los Angeles ,Santa Monica, down to Huntington Beach , is where we lived . yet today we live in housing property in projects Urban's ghettos and have zero generational wealth !!

As an American I’m deeply ashamed of our history. We say we’re the greatest country in the world but how can we say that when this is how we treated human beings. This needs to be acknowledged! The truth needs to be taught in school and not glossed over. How do we move forward and evolve unless we acknowledge the atrocities of the past!

Despite denials, in the USA, in Central & South American countries too. Cultural genocide replacing actual genocide. This history has to be taught far & wide. We can’t just address a tiny part of this. By pointing out Canada’s accountability but not the other countries keeps lying alive & possibilities for cultural genocide to continue.

It is painful to be a descendant of my ancestors who survived the holocaust, the largest genocide that happened to my ancestors. And get this: the United States government has never admitted fault. Native Americans are still on reservations today and living in poverty. You ask why. It is because they want to keep the savage from prospering. That’s the truth. We still get the wrong end of the stick. I went to boarding school, which wasn’t different from my mother attending an Indian boarding school. It was probably slightly better living conditions than what my mother lived through. If you think about Canada.😢 The Canadian government already admitted they did something wrong. The system failed, and they apologized. They modeled their boarding school systems after the United States. But the United States government will not admit guilt. They keep saying they’re looking into it and investigating. What is there to investigate? The US government had a goal to assimilate the merciful Indian savage, all in the name of manifest destiny propaganda. You placed Native Americans on crappy reservations and forced us away from our cultural and traditional lands so that your settlers could move on to our lands and expand to the West. And that’s the truth, and I will never stop saying that. But it’s time to let our ancestors' whistles be heard.🤍💛♥️🖤🦅🌈

I'm 75 y.o., from Ketchikan, Alaska. About 100+ years, a Christian preacher, took about 150 people from B.C. Canada to Alaska. The preacher knew about what was going on throughout Canada. That's why I'm here telling you about this. I was 5 y.o. in the 1st grade, they kicked me out school because I was part Indian. The Principal told me I was in the wrong school. He opened the door, so I left, looking for my school. I ended up at the Lutheran church. I was the only one there. I thought I was the first one there. The preacher wondered why I was there. I told him. He asked a lot of questions, and finally out who my mother was. She picked me up and we drove home. She drove me to school. She told the Principal that I was going to this school, "even if she had to sit in class every day. Everything was cool after that. So I thought. Severe depression and severe anxiety set in. I still have them, deep inside. It's given me a lot of lousy problems. I can't find any meds for this. My mother was kicked out of that same school at 5 y.o. I've prayed for death from about 70 years ago. And dang it, I'm still here. Wish me luck! 😢

Sad how a few are condemning these sacrifices of so many Christians! Interviews well rehearsed and always the same people doing the condemning! Boarding schools around the world are harsh! I feel sorry for kids who are placed there by their parents! FN put eduction into their Treaty Agreements! They registered their children! There were wait lists of those who wanted to attend! FN parents fought the closing of these schools and some bands took over operation of them when the government pulled out! I think the only true statement that came out of truth and reconciliation inquiry was as the progressed the stories got big and more horrendous and so did the amount paid to bands get bigger! There will never be truth as long as on party is allowed to blackmail the other with heresay and no evidence but stories!

Ive been studying this for years im john Fala Ratatoskr of Cherokee Nation NC, and historically buffalo soldiers put tons of children in these places, and spent 20 years of war with us natives after the Civil War, the buffalo soldiers have around 172 so called battles against innocent natives, like the best example is the most famous Wounded Knee, they are the 9th and 10th Cavalry mixed with the 24th and U.S. Infantry you look at the Battles of that time period they are present under those regiments, then you have the false opinions and made up stories that defend them, because it's okay for them to commit such horrible crimes against humanity, but our people outside of the res that don't put study into our history will buy the stuff there selling, interesting fact Tulsa oklahoma was originally a Creek tribes village, they were massacred, the children sent to these schools and then you have these black founded towns, yeah it was found then the Government murdered all the adults, and built a new town over the graves and spiritual spots of the Creek thats what Tulsa oklahoma black Wallstreet covers, this is history not taught in schools, because it changes things and facts over fiction hurt feelings now.

Whatever the abuses in other boarding schools, the governmental boarding schools for Native Americans and Alaska Natives were a state-sanctioned program for deliberate cultural genocide. Laying the blame at the feet of religious organizations does not remove our responsibility as a society to acknowledge the devastation they caused to Indigenous people and work to make reparations.
