Abusers are master manipulators. They know how to sweet talk you, break you down, isolate you from friends & family and then they stick their claws in you and the HEAVY abuse begins. I had no idea how the brain chemistry of a domestic abuse victim changes until I myself was a victim. The threats, the gaslighting, the torture, then the apologies come and the honeymoon phase sets in and you get pulled back in. Then the abuser gets triggered by something so trivial and you’re getting screamed at again. I finally broke free when my abuser set me free. It took him crashing on his motorcycle to wake him up and let me go.

I'm sad you didn't even address non-physical violence. Your partner doesn't have to hit you to be abusive. Emotional abuse is just as bad for a person, even if it doesn't leave physical marks and scars. It's a MUCH wider problem than physical abuse and NEEDS to be addressed. It doesn't matter if they've never hit you. If you're scared of them, you shouldn't be there. Get away. They shouldn't isolate you from having friends or being close to your family. They shouldn't act like a different person in public instead of private. They shouldn't make you feel guilty or coerce you into things you aren't comfortable with doing. If your partner makes you feel unsafe or question you sanity, GET HELP and get AWAY from them. Run if you have to. Violence never starts with fists. It's starts with words. Get out before it escalates.

Yes, good point. Nowadays, a lot of abusers don't use their fists anymore. They use severe psychological and emotional abuse, and neglect. Some of the worst abusers are good at hiding what they are. In my experience, they hide the abuse and the control by not getting physical. But, they are just as dangerous. Maybe more, because no one knows the victim is in danger, they are fooled. Another sign is if they use children against the other parent.

I think the first thing that should be made aware in public is that abuse usually starts with positive behavior such as love bombing and such, also idolization, for example, is also a form of control. Another thing is that abuser is not going to do it all the time and will twist the concept, such as saying that each relationship has up and down or everyone has flaws so when the others start thinking about leaving, they don't. The concept that it is not about violence behavior is crucial to be educate too. Even though you don't have any bruised or never got hit doesn't mean it is not abuse.

yes i was love bombed. he would be super cuddly and sweet and then rape me while i was asleep. he would throw me around and pin all his weight on me while i was having a panic attack telling me ‘if you only calmed down i would stop’. it was constant mind games. i felt like i was drowning. he would one second act like he wanted me to marry him and he was baby talking me, etc. the next second he flipped like a dime and blamed me for everything wrong in his life. looking at me with these eyes.. can’t explain it. it’s just a certain look. seething hatred. there was so much that went on. i would try to kick him out but he would stay outside my house all night calling me and knocking on my door, he climbed my 6 ft privacy fence one time to listen to my conversation with my friend to know what to say to convince me to let him back in. i only got out by him feeling like he didn’t need me anymore, and making him then hate me. i didn’t even mean to, but god was that the best thing that ever happened to me mind you he never hit me, but he did throw me around and pretty much suffocate me, he knew not to ‘hit’ me. well, he did punch me in the stomach while i was driving tho. i got winded. cant forget that

I really like this comment, saying it’s not always bad is something people assume isn’t true. I think people assume it’s terrible 99% of the time and for me there’s months that go by that everything is fine and we’re adventuring and laughing and being affectionate and then boom I say or do something wrong or something comes off in the wrong way and the blow up happens and it’s extreme and exhausting and then the honeymoon phase usually follows quickly behind and the cycle starts all over again. I don’t even know who I am anymore… I try and be brave and muster the courage to leave and then either get pulled back in or feel as if I don’t have a choice due to financial issues and not having anywhere other than my car to go…

The abusers need to be the ones who are made by police to leave. It isn't a real solution for a person who is being abused to "go to a shelter". That is their home. A violent perpetrator should not be rewarded with the residence. They should be in jail or made to go somewhere else.

"Made to leave". How? If there is probable cause for an arrest, that's an easy one; what happens a day later when the abuser bonds out? The right to a reasonable bond is in the 8th Amendment; judges have to have valid reasons to set high bonds or, my personal preference, no bond. A shelter is usually well protected, the abuser doesn't like to show his/her abuse, so won't do it around a bunch of witnesses, and the majority of shelters have a direct line to the police. Sticking to "That is their home" is one of the many ways that abusers find their victims; sadly, with fatal consequences.
@MeredithWaters

@@shannonmanning6166 Made to leave? How? You know: everyone who says "just leave, take the kids, run, pack a bag, go to the shelter". Who says this? Everyone from strangers on KZfaq to friends to counselors and victim's services. The woman (usually) then is weakened and victimized twice. First by the abuser and then by the misguided paradigm of her being "safe" in her car living out of a tote bag. The abuser should be made to leave, go to jail then to a friend's because he can't go home and SHE is safely there. With her kids. Etc.

Extreme anxiety is one of the signs of abuse, it prevents the victim from separating from the abuser, it results in a complete meltdown of the victim. You can be sure that the victim was emotionally and psychologically abused and drove to a physical altercation. The victim usually experiences trauma bonding, they can't understand that they are being abused and take the blame upon themselves. The abuser is usually the rational one and acts in control. Psychopaths usually joke and laugh with the law enforcement and act friendly but that's all an act. Unfortunately, we will never know what kind of relationship they had unless she confided about her struggles to someone close to her. Usually, those couples look perfect on the surface but very toxic behind closed doors. Rip Gabby, I hope your story will address domestic violence and psychopathy on a different level. We have to educate children, so they wouldn't become easy prey for psychopaths.

exactly right. that is a main facet of abuse- keeping the victim off balance and confused, and so making them insecure enough to believe that they can't make big decisions, like leaving. think about it like this: if someone you just met attacked you immediately, you would be done with them immediately. there would be no upside to being with someone who was abusive all the time from day one. abusers operate like slot machines. love payoff- abuse-abuse-abuse-love payoff- abuse.... keeping the victim on the hook and believing love payoff is coming right up.

Inevitable time moving in slow motion, no actually, it's stopped. It didn't have to come to this. Left my family in utter shock... The devil has stolen from us a precious gift that could never be replaced. He sent out one of his most wicked demons to take my loving daughter, Kaden away... They say that time heal all wounds, but this scar may take awhile... y'all please keep me in your most fervent prayers, 'cause there's no pain like when a mother loses a child... To my dearest Lexus, Kaleb, and Logan, I'm so sorry. Momma understands your pain, a monster evil actions have altered your lives forever, and your hearts will never be same... I wish I could rewind the clock, make the suffering stop, and wipe my family tears away. I pray God grants us the strength to carry on with life, 'cause death one day we all must face... I know sometimes there are no words for the feelings in the heart, but just know that I love you all so very much, 'cause family is all we've got... This life is a journey of compassion and sorrows, of yesterday's recollection and aspirations for tomorrow, of pathways we choose and diversion we face, with tranquility and humor, fearlessness and grace, of good times that we've shared and moments of regrets, Kaden, you have touched our lives in beautiful ways we will never forget... Now, you can finally rest baby, and mamma will see you again one day soon. I know God needed you more than me, but still it's hard to accept the truth... I’m staging an intervention with my bff as I just learned her husband got upset with her over something very small. This disagreement led to him throwing her things out of his parents home and then assaulted her. While she was being assaulted in the upstairs bedroom, his parents left and took their grandchild but left my bffs daughter (from a previous relationship) in the home to listen to her mother be beaten. I am so angry and heartbroken especially for her daughter. I cannot believe his parents just left her and her child there. This showed me that if this man should go too far and seriously hurt my friend, his family will certainly protect their son.

The phrase "be a man" was something our teacher called outright damaging. Awareness of male victims is slowly growing, but it's certainly not quickly enough when 1 in 4 men take their own lives.

One of the ways to instantly spot if the one you're dating is physically abusive is by conducting background check, especially if they have history of cases already. Not really, no. Because most abusers are abusive LONG before that and by the time they get to that it's too late. The average abuser said they waited as long as two YEARS into a relationship to get to that point so that the person was already isolated and trapped in a position where they were financially dependent and had no one to go to for help and no way to leave.

It seems like those (male) police officers missed all of the warning signs regarding Brian Laundrie. Most likely, they were probably too busy forming negative judgements about the "emotional female" who was taking all of the blame/ blaming herself.

well not using the benefit of hindsight, what those cops saw was an emotionally unbalanced but uninjured female saying that she attacked the clearly injured male because she wanted him to "stop talking".

Ok so things are great at first but then emotional abuse starts Or the man or woman doesn’t do basic things like pick up the “ significant other “ from work. Spends money, spends time away from the other. Those are signs yet people don’t move on! Forget about working things out. When the Lies and disrespect begin it’s over just face reality and move on!

Yeah a someone calling 911 saying there is a 180lb man hitting a 115lb women in the head should be a dead giveaway but wasn't good enough for Utah police to save a girl's life. Here's hoping the general public finds her murderer and deliver vigilanty justice because the criminal justice system already failed at that job so miserably.

How do you know it wasn't her? He was about her age a gangling over tall young male I doubt he had the understanding to cope with her emotional disorder and obviously aggrandized ideas of her own capabilities. If he is responsible for her death I seriously doubt it was intentional homicide. Why do you automatically blame the male, anyway females can be violent as well and will attack a man very aggressively .Having said that I do not deny a certain type of male has really muddied the waters when it come to male female relationships. However most men do not. Then again so have many females.

. Nobody deserves to die. They're calling it a homicide. Don't think she killed herself. They obviously both had problems. When a woman claws another man with her nails, it's because he won't let go of her neck. She said she had OCD and loved everything organized. She was scared to death in this video. Having OCD and organization skills doesn't warrant death. He went crazy. He took it too far. That's why he's running or he's dead and probably killed himself. She didn't deserve to die, period. They weren't a new couple. They had been together awhile. He obviously snapped. Now his parents are probably convinced he's innocent because of his manipulation and they're putting their freedom on the line for him. The whole family is going to end up in jail if they don't start talking. He could have murdered those other campers out there for all we know. FBI isn't releasing any details. They're waiting for someone to talk.
