Her saying « I now shampoo my own hair » is left unnoticed but it’s the most profound thing she said. I bet her mom was a beast. She owned her daughter by interfering with the most intimate yet trivial things such as bathing or taking a shower on your own. She simply tried to control Jennette every way she could. Remind me of one scene from the movie Black Swan with Nathalie Portman. Nina’s mom cut her daughter’s nails and bathed her. Her mom dreamed to be a ballerina and she lived through her daughter like Jennette’s mom dreamt to be an actress and she forced her daughter to be one. So dark and so sad that a mom can’t offer her child love and acceptance.

Being the daughter of a narcissist is a special hell, not reserved for child actors. I feel for her. I can appreciate how she feels finally free…my freedom has not yet come. I have no siblings, so my experience has been very different, but narcissistic parents consume their children, no matter how many they have.

It’s possible to heal from it. I’m living proof. I became a self-healer and now it’s part of my purpose and passion to help others. I healed myself and my relationship (I accepted it for what it is) and see it has to do with a larger situation. I have become a protector, referee, good natured spiritual daughter. Fortunately my mom and dad are both alive and I am able to live with them as they are both aging and need support. I finally got a voice and can stand up and speak up, not like when I was a kid. In the end, if you can break free from the mental control/codependency conditionings and build your self worth, you can overcome. I’m the youngest of 2 older brothers and half sister from my dad’s side. That’s a whole other mess. Good luck in your healing journey. 🙏🙌✨💟

Yes I’m glad she did aswell and so happy for her and it’s a shame Hollywood still does this to children in the industry and nothing will change and it’s a shame. They need to realize that they need to be protected while in the industry because there are more monsters out there hiding between the cracks. And Hollywood doesn’t know about them yet. Just hope the industry can learn from its mistakes.

I also what to add I hope Hollywood cleans up the act and comes out for being a cult and a mastermind to abuse children. River phoenix killed himself because there was nothing no one that helped him for being abused sexually. So there needs to be something to protect children in the industry. Corey Haim was abused aswel and no one helped and I’m sure other actors and actresses knew what was going on then. Now they are starting to come out like Rose McGowan and others. Because they were hushed to stay quiet.

I'm around halfway through the audiobook and dear LORD. The fact that she is even halfway healthy is a miracle and a testament to the 'self-work' she has done in therapy. People who are insensitive or naïve enough to think parents can't ruin their kids' emotional and physical wellbeing need to read this book. It's very full on but it gives a great explanation of how enmeshment and parental abuse work.

@@Mrs.Butterworth That but also you’re not considering that while there is a genetic component, it depends on what the person does to prevent it from happening. For example, I am in therapy and have so far been diagnosed with anxiety, ADHD, and PTSD. I am not on the spectrum of narcissism like she is. While I do understand that it is her mental illness, she should have gotten help for it instead of dragging her kids through hell. It doesn’t excuse her from what she’s done.

I'm partway through the audiobook and you're right. Jeanette's mum's whole attitude is very Mama Rose ("I am your mother, therefore I - de facto- ALWAYS know what's best for you." ) The hardest person to battle ,with is someone who, despite being more wrong than either of you could ever imagine, believes they're always 100 percent in the right: they will run rings around you, arguing that black is white all the while. Especially hard when they're your parent/carer and IN CHARGE of you because, then, your inner voice says:: "OK, they're in charge, therefore, they MUST be right."

I grew up my whole life watching her, loving iCarly, following her closely, I saw her episode of Cupcake Wars for her country music album. And knowing that at that time she'd been suffering anorexia, and here she was on Cupcake Wars, promoting something someone expected her to do, eating these desserts that those bakers had made just for her, knowing that she was probably feeling so much guilt if she truly enjoyed having those cakes, it's really hard to think about and to watch that content the same way again. I'm glad that she's a lot more honest and authentic now. Now, she feels a lot more real. I respected her back then, now I'm in my twenties younger than her by only six years, and I respect her a hell of a lot more now.

Excited to read this and proud of her for all of this. Very scary to come out and share your life in a way that is very real and easily judged. So many people I’ve come across meet parental abuse with “but they love you deep down and you should know that,” some don’t. And it’s okay to make peace with that as an adult so you can move on in life in the healthiest way possible and not repeat the cycle. Family’s unconditional love is not a real thing, it’s a guise for abuse. We all deserve love, but you also need to hold up your end of the deal. Hope her future is bright and free.

Given the fact that McCurdy has spoken about her recovery from eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia), her current appearance is notable. While she may be 'naturally thin', she nonetheless looks emaciated (see recent photos from her Instagram & her recent interviews on GMA and Nightline). McCurdy doesn't seem to have GAINED much weight since the time she was in 'iCarly' and 'Sam & Cat', and in fact, she may be larger/heavier in photographs from that time than she is now. This is not what one might predict for someone who has RECOVERED from eating disorders. It seems intuitive that many women/girls with anorexia or bulimia will experience a noticeable weight gain after they have recovered. Given the fact that people with such ailments may look to McCurdy's experiences for guidance or support, her current appearance is worthy of discussion. While it is unclear how the interviewer could have broached the topic during this particular interview, one wonders whether he was considering such issues while looking at her.

love that this was a refreshing interview; most I've seen were asking the same repetitive questions designed to get a quick headline. This interviewer def did his research and asked thoughtful questions!

It's extremely sad to hear that her mother was pretty much manipulative and using her just to help the family which isn't right. I honestly wish the mother could've got help with whatever she was struggling with because using your own child as a puppet to provide for the family is just evil! She truly ruined her daughter's life just to make money which was clearly the whole point of why she got her into acting in the first place. It wasn't about Jennette making her as an actor to achieve success it was for her mom to make money which was dark. I'm glad she is doing fine now. I can definitely see Jennette becoming an author. The way she talks and expresses herself is beautiful. I hope to see her inspire and touch a lot of people with her book and many others she create. My heart goes out to her❤

I have plans to order and read this book. I just can’t help but feel sorry for Jennette. Her mother was indeed a pain in the ass for forcing her to be famous, not accepting that acting was something that Jennette wanted to pursue all her life. I can’t wait to read it!

She was far more than a pain in the ass. She was abusive to her own daughter in every possible way.

I don't like how the person interviewing her is all business as usual when she's talking about a serious topic this is a lot to talk about and it takes a lot of courage especially if your whole life revolves around pleasing an abusive person

Sad she went through this. I’m concerned about someone I know having a narcissistic mother bht I don’t want to jump to conclusions. Can anyone else share their experience with an overbearing/narc mom if you’re comfortable??

@@fromthebottom1112 encourage her to watch KZfaq videos about narcissism. Dr.Ramani, Assist direct, Narc survivor are just 3 good ones I know right off the top. The more she knows the more she'll grow. She won't be sorry. I got out of 4 narcissistic relationships around the same time six years ago(all thanks to KZfaq). I went into therapy and I began my journey of going no contact with them all and breaking the bonds that come with being involved with them. I have never been happier, more sane and at peace in my whole life.

I completely understand what kind of mom she had because mine could fit in the same box. I call it the "Coraline's mom syndrome" (if you haven't seen that movie I recommend it, it's called Coraline) and it's like having two moms in one body where the normal one loves you, want you to have a better life than she had, want to take care of you, want and wish your own good... but on the other side there's this eye-buttoned mom who want you besides her all the time, thinks she knows exactly what you want and what you need, thinks she should take all of your decisions so you won't make a single mistake and at that minimum sign you let her know you wanna be free, and she's suffocating you and you wanna be you not a better representation of the things she lacks... she lose it. Just like Jennette I also wanted to be a writer and I've had the dream to write a book that would be similar to hers, but I guess I'm not ready to face some things yet because I still have my mom by my side... My biggest fear is have to wait till she's no longer here to be free (because I can't afford neither therapy or live on my own) and end up with a lot of resentment. I'm so ready to heal but the problem is she isn't 😕
