To many, Bali’s Kerobokan jail is a place of creepy fascination, a repository of misery in an island playground. But what’s it really like in there?
For the first time a TV crew has obtained virtually unrestricted access to all corners of Kerobokan’s men’s prison. The Foreign Correspondent team spend a week roaming the jail, filming and interviewing prisoners and guards to capture life inside.
"Yeah, this is my little piece of paradise" - Bali Nine member Matthew Norman.

Our prisons should be the same way. Sadly in the US they’re being built by corporations for profit, and in order to make money they need inmates and they need them to stay… when you have that kind of a system the inmate doesn’t stand a chance from the moment they enter the court room… judges are being dragged into longer sentences and sentences for those who would never see the inside of a prison before… we’re letting down inmates and only creating better criminals thereby putting the public at risk of coming into contact with them.

My mother and father heard an untrue rumor about me, I've never been in trouble in my life, always been a respected leader wherever I am, own many businesses, very successful man, and a nice and caring person toward even strangers. But my parents after hearing this untrue rumor, and after me telling them the absurdity of the claim, declared me dead and never spoke to me every again when I was 40 years old. So I am assuming, if I actually ever did anything, they wouldn't come see me, when they threw me away over an untrue rumor. YES, this man has a wonderful and loving father. He is Blessed, not all can say that as you have stressed. Blessings to you Omar.

28:50 He said the prisoners as "warga binaan" which in english it's actually translated as "person in care" rather than "prisoner" It may looks like a subtle gesture but as we can see compared to almost every prison in this world, the result is spot on.

This is what prison should be. These men are actually being rehabilitated and trying to better themselves. Of course not everyone will take advantage of this but for the most part they seem like they're trying their best and making the best out of a bad situation. There's no point being violent and miserable especially when you're all in it together.

or they should show the prisoners the film of that prison in deep russia called the black dolphin ....with prisoners that locked up 23 hours per day in their cells and 1 hour per day walking in a small cage - no more - and they are knowing that they will never be free again. This bali prison has more dignity and responsebilities and things to do for the prisoners there. What I do not understand ist why people risk prison in other countries by drug dealing etc - if they would have been caught in countries like saudi arabia ....they would not have faced prison - they would have faces the sword.....

I was in Singapore prison back in 2003 and it was really hell..once I got caught playing scrabble during master check and I spent 7 days tied by wrist and ankles to the walls of 2x2 cell in the blistering heat since the cell blocks were made out of metal and the sun would hit on it all afternoon..sometime the temperature would get so hot that when the warden opened the door you would see smoke coming out of the cell..we slept on the floor and we were sometime up to 32 inmates in 20 m2 cell..

I have seen people with freedom more depressed, stressed out.. with health and mental problems, there are neighbors fighting with each other, there are angers, jealousy, hatred,..etc.. I have seen suffering far worse outside jail than in this jail.!!!..In this prison prisoners are more closer to God, community, brotherhood, skills,.. songs, sports, some sort of very soothing vibrant...I am glad humanity still exist in some prison...!!

Many state prisons in USA are very bad, and some Fed prisons are bad, but usually better than state prisons from what has been reported from prisoners themselves. There are many killings and serious injuries and isolation in US prisons. Some prisoners are completely isolated for years and decades. The jails in various local areas can be very bad as well.

I've noticed something: in places like the EU and Indonesia where they treat the prisoners like actual human beings and give them the appropriate respect, they are MUCH better behaved, don't harbor much (or any) grudge towards "the system", and in general appear to actually become rehabilitated towards the end of their sentence. This is independent of prison conditions since clearly Kerobokan prison is no 5* hotel compared to EU prisons, yet all the inmates seem to have mutual respect for each other and the guards and rules in general. The US could really stand to learn something from all this.

The worst irony is the heroin addict who has lost everything and withdrawing, feeling like death walking then offered an chance o have more heroin than he has ever seen, He takes the risk and is caught. He cleans himself up over the next decade and see how nice life can be as he never experienced life without heroin as an adult before, The after he appreciated his life, he is rewarded with the ironic bullet. When he committed the crime, death would have been a reprieve but when he was standing there anticipating the coming bullet, i am sure he smiles at the irony, just before shedding a tear and then his grey matter
