Alan Rickman is famed for his versatility, playing romantic leads, comedy characters and arch villains in the course of his 40-year acting career. One Plus One's Jane Hutcheon interviewed him in 2015 when he visited Australia promoting his new film, A Little Chaos.
Set in 17th Century France, A Little Chaos tells the story of two artists who fall in love while working at Versailles on a project for King Louis XIV.
0:50 -- on working with Kate Winslet and Matthias Schoenaerts while directing and acting in A Little Chaos
10:05 -- on growing up in post-WWII London, and the loss of his father to cancer
12:23 -- on starring in King Grizzly Beard at school, which fired his love of performance
17:48 -- on how JK Rowling gave him a top-secret steer on how to play Professor Snape in the Harry Potter movies
20:05 -- on Truly Madly Deeply, and how his working relationship with co-star Juliet Stevenson allowed them to take risks
24:00 -- on his attitude to aging and if he is satisfied with his career
More of Jane Hutcheon's One Plus One faves: iview.abc.net.au/show/one-plu...
In a film career spanning 30 years, Alan Rickman has performed in close to 40 movies, playing a wide range of rolls including the Sherriff of Nottingham (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, 1991), heist mastermind Hans Gruber (Die Hard, 1988), Love Actually's Harry (2003), and Colonel Brandon (Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, 1995). Not to mention Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films. His stage career stretches back to 1976, when he played the title role in Sherlock Holmes.

The interviewer said to Alan Rickman " I believe you are 69 now" and he nodded his head. Alan died in January 2016 aged 69, so he actually died a few months or so after this interview from cancer. He looks so fit and healthy here that it is hard to believe that he was actually very ill. One of my favourite actors

One of his best interviews. I loved him in so many roles, Brandon, Shape and King Louis. King Louis stands out in the end because he was with Kate again and Brandon is in there and he was Director as well. The final scene is so moving. See him at his most minimalist and affecting. Seeing Emma Thompson talk him when he left us, is summed up in Little Chaos. He would have made a fantastic Dumbledore like Lecturer in an Acting Academy. The Rickman Awards should be a thing. Maybe a Scholarship program. Miss you but Thank you for your gift in theatre and screen.

Agree- I’ve watched a million of them, these were such thoughtful questions and the interview did an amazing job preparing for this. I think Alan got quite tired of answer the same things over and over again, and he was able to finally open himself up and share his thoughts because he was asked really good questions for once. Well done to this interviewer!!

As the old saying goes, "A man of honor is slow to speak", and this saying is perfectly suitable for rickman. The saying that a nobleman is slow to speak does not mean that he is slow to speak, but that a gentleman is responsible for what he says and does. He speaks with thought! He explains the difference between stage and film in a simple and clear way. This interview shows that he is one of the most balanced gentleman backed by solid stack of experience.

Jane Hutcheon is a FANTASTIC interviewer. (Her interview with Barry Humphries... Brilliant!) Many interviewers feel as though they must have a 'conversation with'.. but Jane Asks Questions.. and then Listens. She tastefully digs a little deeper, with almost a 6th sense... and then listens some more. She's perfectly content to let the artist shine. I'm very impressed.

I stumbled across this One Plus One interview with Alan Rickman tonight and simply had to watch. I first saw Mr Rickman in Die Hard and enjoyed it thoroughly. Like tonight, I stumbled onto Truly, Madly, Deeply in 1990. It was during that film that I fell truly, madly, and deeply in love with him as an actor. I was one of those people sobbing uncontrollably while watching him and Juliet Stevenson on film. He was one of those amazing actors who so thoroughly became the character that I would never think of him as Snape as I watched Colonel Brandon, or as the Sheriff of Nottingham while seeing him as de Valera, or as himself while watching any of his film roles. I sobbed uncontrollably on the day I learned of his passing and still feel a slight pang whenever I see him on screen...large or small. Thank you 🧡

The late, great Alan Rickman would have been too reticent to class himself with the likes of Sir Ralph Richardson, but he surely was. I recall his work as far back as the excellent BBC series of 'Paradise Postponed' where Mr Rickman played a particularly nasty Anglican curate, Reverend Slope. I'd not seen him before yet I knew I'd be seeing this actor often in the future, his talent was too big to ignore. In fact, his Professor Snape in the Potter films has a twinge of Rev. Slope in him. Yet, Rickman's acting range was huge and he wasn't afraid to tackle roles that no casting director would, immediately, dream of suggesting for him. Then as if to totally round off his range and career, he played a vital role in the 'Star Trek' spoof, 'Galaxy Quest' which, by the way, David Mamet listed as one of only 4 'Perfect Films' ever made! In this brilliant comedy he gets to play, with much obvious joy, a character not unlike himself in that he is a once famous Shakespearean actor reduced to playing an alien member of a spaceship crew in a TV series. If you haven't seen 'Galaxy Quest; please watch, even if you don't like sci-fi comedies, just for the truly magnificent role Alan Rickman created on screen. Good heavens, Alan Rickman even brought class and panache to the first 'Die Hard' film; such was his on-screen power. I can only write about Alan Rickman now because I've was genuinely devastated at the news of his sudden, premature death. For a time I couldn't even watch him on screen; it was too upsetting. I had the same reaction to the sad death of Jeremy Brett. These two British actors were world class talents and, for me, Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes was truly engrossing and perfect. Conan Doyle would have used him immediately had he been around back then. We rarely see actors like Rickman and Brett who both shared a huge acting range and capability, topped off with great, yet humble, talent. VALE and thank you to both you outstanding gentlemen. Thanks must also go to the ABC and Jane Hutcheon. Little wonder Alan Rickman made her top ten out of the hundreds of excellent interviews she did in that series. I must check to see if Jane ever interviewed Jeremy Brett; but I fear Mr Brett didn't travel so much. He was tied to his Sherlock almost up until his passing. Thank you, Jane. BH

When I first saw him on my screen I was only about 10 and it was 2016/17 and I had just got into Harry Potter and looked him up on google only to discover that he had passed which broke ten year old me, I then devoted all of my soul to Harry Potter and Snape before just this year 2022 got to some more incredible things that he did including but not limited to Sweeney Todd, Mesmer, Alice and Wonderland and through the looking glass and lastly Sense and Sensibility. Just yesterday 8/10/22 I gained access to his diaries which is a dream come true for me as I’ve always wanted to know more about what I’m interested in and yeah! Great interview. Tragic to think that 10 months after this he was gone … didn’t quite make it to his 70th … 😢 RIP Alan Rickman

That’s the first time I ever saw him! Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Such a great movie with so many wonderful actors! I just rewatched it. It’s been a long time since I’d seen any movie in a theater. Great to see this online. Trying to find Truly, Madly, Deeply, now.

I remember him when he play Elliot Marston, when I first watched Quigley Down Under} this was before I knew his name was Alan Rickman.. I briefly watched Robin Hood, King of Thieves. My favorite is when Alan Rickman played Professor Serverus Snape. With his deep voice give him a edge that Pr. Serverus Snape his character..

Mahatma. What a super soul! I wonder where he went, do you think he’s dwelling in some corner of the universe, being articulate and endearing.
