this is straight from the production notes. When Alan was dropped in at final scene, they were going to count to three. Instead of releasing him at three, they released him at two so he could look even more surprised. Looks like it worked out pretty well.

It definitely is but IMO the jumping off the building scene in the first Lethal Weapon movie tops that one. That movie came out one year prior to Die Hard and that scene doesn't take itself too seriously and in a way it has a mix of comedic and serious elements to it instead of being 100% serious because at the end of the day they both make safe landing and are still alive.

I remember watching ‘Die Hard’ with my husband, when it was first shown in theaters. What a great movie and he certainly played a major role in why it is so great. Both Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman have lines that are still used today. His death is a tragedy: to his family, friends and all his numerous fans. Now Bruce Willis has had to quit acting, do to a debilitating illness.

What an incredible actor, product of a grammar school education before our country went bonkers and got rid of them all. Rickman was from a council estate. If he was born now, we'd have been deprived of one of the stage and silver screens greatest actors.

What’s amazing is Alan said his fall was 40 feet straight down onto an airbag. Watching the movie it really looks like he’s falling from 32 stories up. I don’t know if it’s the camera angles or what but it’s amazing how they can make things like this in movies look so believable and real life like. R.I.P. Alan Rickman ❤️❤️❤️😢😢

And the take they used was the one where they released him a little before the agreed upon cue, just to get that extra terror on his face, according to the behind the scenes material. The first time I saw him not as a villian after many times seeing Die Hard and Robin Hood was so trippy, to finally see him in a funny part and later on in interviews. He was a great actor and person shame that it is already past tense! :(
