Service centres don't always clean the machine properly for you. I have had dozens of machines given to me for a service, where the owner has just paid someone else, only discover that there is no way the machine has been fully opened! Your overlocker will work well for you for years to come if only you knew how to open, clean and oil the machine yourself. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to open your machine.

Thank you for this. I service vintage sewing machines and it is helpful to know that sergers are still just sewing machines after all in spite of the fact that they may seem more intimidating. Keeping them clean and oiled is very simple. I would make one more suggestion - Keep the screws for each section with the piece they came out of in case they are different lengths or sizes. Easier to keep track that way for when putting it back together.

I'd back screw on reassembly as you'll feel the screw drop in the thread. This is important because self cutting screws will cut a new thread and eventually the screw has nothing to bite on

🙌🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽well done!! Not really bad. It’s just a plastic box around a bit of machinery. What’s the worst that’ll happen? Blokes make a drama out of so much but it’s easy peasy. Well done for having a go !

@@AbisDen yea, I’m normally scared to taken anything mechanical/electrical apart, but I’ve had my serger for almost a decade and it’s been sitting in the box for at least 5 years now. I’ve NEVER oiled it, so I figured I should try to give it some TLC since you made it look manageable. I figured if I botched it, I would buy a new serger 😅

I bought a Brother 4 thread serger on Ebay and I was unable to use it because it was so stiff and hard to turn. I didn't want to pay the money to have it serviced, so I decided to do it myself. Your video showed me everything I needed to do to get it working. Now it works beautifully. Thank you so much for your wonderful video, it saved me a ton of time and money!

Thank you so much for this video. I inherited my Mum’s Singer Overlocker and couldn’t get it to do a thing. This gave me the confidence to take it apart and see what was going on. Turned out that the front needle guard was loose and interfering with the left needle. Cleaned the machine, tightened the needle guard and overlocker worked perfectly. I’ve never used one before but I’m now looking forward to my first project.😊

Amazing. This made me so pleased. Knowing individuals are feeling empowered to open and work on their own machines is lovely. It’s not too difficult, it’s just having the confidence and control. Well done 👍🏽 your mum would be so proud of you! ✨🌷🪡

Thanks Bill. The number of times people drench their machines in oil hoping it’ll fix things actually makes machines worse. I have found that my friends at the local mill do the same and don’t appreciate that over piling causes as many problems as neglecting to oil.

*OH MY GOD* Thank you so much for this video! My overlocker suddenly started making strange squeaking sounds mid sewing. The thread went all out of wack and no matter what I do its not improving. I will follow your video and give my poor machine a deep clean tonight. Thank you so so much for your video! I never knew that a deep clean is so doable. Let's hope that will fix the problem 👀😳

Thanks Abi. I subscribed. I have a Singer Differential Feed 14SH654 that I purchased second hand for $80 AU . It has worked well with three threads , with the left needle ,but the right needle is hitting and breaking. Your tutorial has given me the confidence to pull this apart and see what the issue is . Cheers from Australia.

I may have hit a pin when overlocking 🙈 The fabric now tears instead of cuts 😳 I’ve fiddled around with adjusting the height of the top and bottom blades by loosening the screws that hold them in place. It’s better but not perfect. How do you adjust the heights of the top and bottom blades to get them in exactly the right place? I have the Singer S14-78 Thanks in advance 🙂

Hello, I just found this video while looking for photos and instructions for disassembling singer overlock machines. Without much forethought I took apart serger to do a deep clean(it’s from 1988), and have been trying to reassemble her. I have unfortunately left the machine half assembled for two days, where I have now forgotten where two of the metal pieces go. All the diagrams I’ve found only show the loopers so I haven’t been able to figure out where they went. Do you think there is a place I can look to find high quality photo or video of a partially disassembled singer machine? I’m pretty stumped and don’t know where else to look. Sorry for the long comment. And thanks. :)
@AbisDen
@AbisDen Жыл бұрын
I’m sorry I can’t help you, without the machine in front of me, it’s difficult to confirm which pieces you are referring to. I don’t have any access to service manuals but the manufacturer may help you if you ask.

Any ideas as to why my serger which is barely used and only a few months old would stop in the middle of sewing? I tried retreading but that didn’t work. The light works so it’s getting power.
@AbisDen
@AbisDen Жыл бұрын
Occasionally, if the power lead slips out of the machine a little, the light stays on but the machine won’t work. Other than that, the machine may have frozen. This has been noted on many Brother models

I have the singer hd0405s and i have to have the tensions set to 9,7,7,7 otherwises it not working. Going by your other videos the cant seem to calibrate the discs, is it not possible for this overlocker
@AbisDen
@AbisDen 4 ай бұрын
You can recalibrate it yourself. It’s very easy to do. The machine isn’t anything special but I suspect you’re not managing to get threads in between the discs if you’re hitting those high numbers. The singer is as good as a brother so it will work. X

You could try a long handled screwdriver or apply a drop of oil at each screw point to help ease it out.
