Ableton Reverb - Pre Delay and Stereo Width

Here we take a look at how we can use Ableton's reverb to create depth but from a the perspective of time and space. Time being pre delay and space meaning the stereo field. Instruments that are full wide, taking up all the stereo width dont play with reverb nicely if their frequency content is the same as the verb so reducing the width of the instrument and leaving the reverb wide is a great way to add depth to your mix. Add some pre delay to your reverb to isolate the initial transient for clarity and separation. Using arrangement view you can figure out the millisecond time divisions of the BPM you're working with and apply that to your pre delay.

Its a nice reverb unit for sure. I have 'FabFilter Pro-R' from the Fab bundle (Fabfilter VST's are beauties!) but for reverb I usually still use Abletons. Its the Comp & EQ I'm in love with. The rest, I haven't delved very deeply into. IIRC Pro-R has 'space/size' linked with 'decay time' whereas I prefer all parameters to be individually controllable. Can't create "long decay & predelay + small size" reverb (something like plate reverb maybe) if size is linked to decay. Maybe theres a way to unlink them but until I play around with it enough to find out, I'll be keeping Ableton "stock Reverb" close by as always. It does more or less everything I think I need! Just a shame you can't get a "spring reverb" sound from it though, which sounds great in EG Dub & Reggae.

Great tutorial. Would be nice if/when Ableton creates a new reverb product or updates this one that they allow for note divisions of the predelay as they do when modulating an LFO. I also found that I'm more likely to use more depth when mixing on speakers rather than headphones.

watch out for that dynamic grid, its got me over & over again. Just a heads up with love my man, Your note grid in arrangement was dynamic at time of recording e.g. when demonstrating the pre-delay for the drum part the dynamic arrangement grid settled at a note value of 1/128 (22.55ms) & not 1/16 (which is 172.42ms).. just a heads up thanks & much love bro

@SeedtoStage 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks you're right and thats correct. Its all how it sounds at the end of the day. What matters is that the divisions of time are synced in ms to the bpm. Whether that be 1/128th or 1/8th or whatever. if you want that "pushy pully" kinda sound and provided that the source material plays well with it. I think its best to experiment around.

it is very nice expect that you did not zoom in on 1 bar, but 1 beat. So that means, when you talk about 16th notes, you actually talk about 64th notes. So should we put the pre delay longer?
@Hanzimann1
@Hanzimann1 4 жыл бұрын
I would think the formula for calculating time per note is: 1/(BPM)*(60) or just 1/(BPS), then to get a partial: 1/(BPM)*(60)/(nth) where n is 8, 16 or whatever.

great tutorial, helped me a lot and earned you a sub BUT wouldn't it make more sense to mono the drum verb? drums sit usually in the mid of the mix and instead widen the guitar verb. in live situations each guitar player is panned hard right or left to fill the stereo field with beefy low to midrange information which could eventually cause phase problems in the mid. I could be wrong cause your mix sounds amazing anyway so I am grateful for any kind of information

Hey great thanks for the feedback. I would try to avoid doing things that are "usual" and do things that sound good with what material you're mixing. Also i would try to avoid what i call "prescription" mixing tips. Such as "boost 5k in the snare drum" or "always wide pan guitars." Following these "rules" can really wreck a mix as no snare drum is the same, no mic is the same, and no tuning is the same. Sometimes guitars sound better in the center. Its better to break down why you would wide pan guitars for example. Usually it is because 2 or more guitars have a lot of similar mid range frequencies and in order to get separation, you'd pan them away from each other etc. In this mix the synth is wide so it doesnt make sense to make the guitar wide. If I was focusing on a polished mix here i likely would pan the guitar slightly to right or left just to get it to pop out a bit more, but i wanted people to listen to the verbs here.

@@SeedtoStage I hear ya, it's all about context and the individual needs of each sound. btw how would you check a track for said phase issues? I fell anxious about fucking up a track in the low end with several pads, drones, reverbs, convolver etc. So should I set all reverbs at the same predelay and decay time? eg 130 bpm eight notes are 230,7ms ok, I get that but predelay and decay is contextual right? how is the split up?
@StephenAndrichuk

Out of curiosity, why have a separate verb send for each track? Would it be any different than having a reverb on each track and play with the dry/wet?
@madastrota
@madastrota 3 жыл бұрын
Note that each reverb was set differently. Some had different pre-delay settings, the bass verb cut out the low end, guitar verb was mono, etc.
