Just what i needed right now! I suffer with CFS so i hit blocks where i really struggle to come up with ideas and I was looking for a way to explore theory and different keys while coming up with ideas atst but in a really simple way and this nails it. I'd love to see more on creating moods and emotion through the choice of keys and scales and how you take this further in the composition process but i am gonna watch your masterclasses if it's covered there. Cheers!

This is really great mate. Thank you for all your videos and tools all the ones I've seen have proved incredibly helpful. I was just wondering if something similar could be done but for generating drum patterns, I struggle with them and often find myself having to use preset grooves or midi clips and modifying them to get my drum beats...
@ELPHNT
@ELPHNT 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the compliments! 🙏🏻 And yes, it will definitely work for drums. Try using pretty much the same technique as above but instead route the MIDI to a track with a Drum Rack. You might just need to refine the note ranges so that it triggers whatever drums you've got set up, but it will definitely work. You probably also won't need any of the MIDI effects like Chord and Scale 'cause they won't be as useful with drums, though you can get some interesting results. The key for generating rhythms would be the unsync'd / polyrhythmic trigger loops. I hope that makes sense.

Good job. Think this is where Live and other DAWs can evolve by adding generative elements like this.
@ELPHNT
@ELPHNT 6 жыл бұрын
I don't know about other DAWs but I think Live is already very good for things like this. Follow Actions and Dummy Clips are amazing for generative stuff (see Part 2 of this video), and obviously things like this technique are possible because of the routing system. MaxForLive also has some incredible options for generative stuff - there are some crazy sequencers and then also things like the LFO, Envelope Follower and Shaper devices too.

Try plugging random velocity into a MIDI Effect Rack with velocity chains - I had C major and A major as two chains with equal chance, fed with 7th chords, and I love what I'm hearing. Just having the computer do chord borrowing for me :)
@mxncrvlmnnts
@mxncrvlmnnts 4 жыл бұрын
Can you explain how to do that? Sounds like a really interesting idea !
@philbertius
@philbertius 4 жыл бұрын
mxncrvlmnnts Look into MIDI Effect Racks and Velocity-based chaining. Combined with the “Velocity” MIDI effect, with “Random” set to max, it should be fairly obvious from there. Just put different scales in different chains (or whatever you want, actually.)

It would be great to do this with drums too and then have an LFO controlling the global randomness and "intensity"(perhaps note density, more or less notes), and/or assign it to a knob rather than an LFO, and also have knobs for these parameters for individual tracks in the song. That way you can control the general flow of the track live.
@ELPHNT
@ELPHNT 6 жыл бұрын
Have you tried routing the triggers to a drum track instead of an instrument track? 😉 Try routing individual trigger tracks though, as opposed to the bus track. You might be able to set up what you're looking for.
