Maybe this video is a part of "Erik's diary" if you will. A simple outing with a specific topic. This is a February ski trip to the small scrubby cabin. Coffee on the Trangia Triangle stove. And talking about hiking binoculars. The binocular talk starts at 3.30

I totally agree with your choice of binoculars. Having worked in a specialist optical retail outlet, I was able to compare many different binoculars. The 8x32 are definitely the best option - light enough to carry all day, only very slightly less bright than 8x42, brighter than 10x42 and much easier to hold without shake and a wider field of view than either of the 42s. I was torn between Leica and Swarovsk, but in poor light the Sarovskis were far better than the Leicas. The only downside is the exorbitant price, which of couse allows the Swarovski family to live in their luxury!!

Hello! As always great to see another video! Just in case you haven’t tried them on your binoculars, add a ‘Winged Eyecup Set Swarovision’ to yours and be amazed how much move pleasant viewing is! No joke, for me it makes a massive difference, cuts out the light leaking into the eyecup and improves comfort. Highly recommend!

Like Zeiss or Steiner, Swarovski is a premiere brand that will last a hundred years or more, with proper care. I couldn't afford any of those but was pleasantly surprised by the performance of my Svarska brand 8X32's. Excellent points, Erik, on the why's and wherefore's of having the right binoculars for these outdoor occasions. And that Anorak you wear looks super-useful and functional. Thanks for another top-shelf post. Always the best content, production, quality and especially presentation! Cheers.

Interesting ... I use a pair of 8x32 as well, but from a certain different vendor. The main use is for "looking around", be it during rest periods or for searching for a path or possible route. I keep mine in a pocket on my backpack or inside my jacket however. This still allows for rather quick access. I always found it a bit annoying to keep the binos around my neck as my hiking trips can be kind of sweaty, especially in the alps during summer. BTW you were the inspiration to get myself a Trangia stove as an alternative to my gas stove and I now use it on a regular basis.

I use 8x32 also. Tried 10x before, but as you hinted at, one needs to sit or stand completely still when looking through 10x magnification. 8x is much less sensitive to your own movements, or put differently your movements does not transfer/translate to the view/image that easy.

Honestly, you have influenced me to bring binoculars on my hikes as well. But I have two for different purposes: A very good 10x42 (Leica Noctivid), which I use on my day trips, and a very lightweight (230gr) 10x25 (Ultravid) for mulitday hikes. More I would not be willing to carry in addition to the hiking equipment. Normally, I only use them during my breaks - but my breaks are long and numerous ;)
