THIS VIDEO IS JUST ABOUT ME AND MY BORING LIFE, FEEL FREE TO SKIP IT IF YOU'RE ONLY INTERESTED IN ART TUTORIALS
This video is way longer than I meant it to be, I kept adding random stuff and talking about various. The final result is pretty packed with various info about my past art.
Some of you might find it amusing, and some of you might find the spurts of rapid artistic improvement to be inspiring.
I firmly believe anyone can go from no experience to being a professional quality artist within 1-2 years of hard work. I'm not a good example of working hard, but I hope some of you are... because I'd love to see you guys make videos of your progress someday.

For the record, that was the stuff I actually scanned onto my computer when I was that age, so I definitely considered it my "highlight reel" at the time. I assure you, the only requirement to being an artist is a positive outlook on the concept of improvement. If you see a 7 year old that is amazing at art, it's because the kid has been instilled with confidence in that field due to the experiences that kid has had. No one has innate talent, but maybe innate confidence. You can gain that.

I need some artist friends. I think that's been my problem. I know how good I want to be, and I try to practice, but I just end up being lazy because there's no one I can talk to about my art. everyone I know just oohs and ahhs but that doesn't help me improve or motivate me.

I almost entirely draw from memory. Since I work in that fashion, the main thing I'm practicing when I actually do a reference is how things work... and not as much about being able to draw what I see. Although, being able to recognize colors the colors I see is important.

Finding good anatomy is always a tough one. For quick gesture practice I sometimes stop by "posemaniacs. com" but for in depth stuff, it's generally easiest to just use yourself. Most of the hand studies were just my hands... and a lot of the studies on how the muscles in the arm/torso turn and work were just using a mirror to really examine things. As for the second part, I definitely think that spending little time on LOTS of pictures is the way to go. The early moments are most important.

This is really great! The jump from the DA period to the concept art period is so drastic! I wish we could see/you had some more of the inbetween stuff. Otherwise it kind of feels like the classic: "Draw some circles, now draw the rest of the Owl" meme. I think a lot of the viewers might be at your DA phase level or maybe a little ahead of that but can't figure out how to make that jump to the early CA.org sketch book level. That in between period is where a lot of people give up.

I just turned thirty and decided after two years in college to go with my gut and study art. I can't go to school right now so I'm trying to learn on my own. The part of the video that actually helped the most was having you share your issues with anxiety and deciding to get help. Like improving my art, finding a job, trying to be more productive and of course, handling the following frustration wich leads then to anxiety and so on and so on... Very interesting to hear your story and how quickly you got to your level of skill. I went from not really drawing at all to suddenly wanting to be an artist around age 18, so I went and got a BFA and yet I'm way outclassed by every other artist I know. I'd be a good example of how college doesn't mean you're certain to be a great artist, but at the same time I know that if I hadn't gone to school I'd have never gotten to where I am now. Different things work for different people, I suppose.

I never got into much guideline stuff, not that it's a bad idea, but I enjoy trying to form any piece of the body based on a different piece in a more procedural way. Just personal preference, but when I'm tuned it, it produces some good stuff. Anatomy was often photo ref, with more in depth studies of muscle/skeletal movement using my own body.
