Want perfectly in tune valves? Play Trombone

My music teacher got a valved trombone recently. I'm not sure I can respect him as I once did...
@TrentHamilton
@TrentHamilton 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the trouble with that theory is that the partials in the harmonic series also aren't perfectly in tune, so whilst you don't have to worry about valves, you've still got that to deal with.
@EvanBeachy
@EvanBeachy 6 жыл бұрын
Trent Hamilton that’s why you learn to either lip up or tune your instrument so that any tuning inconsistencies can be easily adjusted be either pulling he slide in or out
@Xzyum00
@Xzyum00 6 жыл бұрын
Trent Hamilton One other thing to note though is that if you're playing in B flat major then the partials line up VERY well if you're playing with adjusted intonation.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm a trombonist) but if you play a 3 valve instrument the third valve is basically equivalent to the first and second combined, so if you never use it by itself should you be able to just tune the third valve a bit flat?
@TrentHamilton
@TrentHamilton 6 жыл бұрын
The trouble is that the 1st and 2nd valve combination is in tune in some notes, but out of tune in some other notes, so 3rd by itself is sometimes used as an alternate fingering. But I get the point - normally I tend to tune my third valve a little flat.
@williamsonsmd5646
@williamsonsmd5646 6 жыл бұрын
On most modern 3 valve instruments, the 3rd valve is made so the instrument is in tune when playing 2nd + 3rd. This leaves using 3rd alone too flat and using either 1st + 3rd or 1st + 2nd + 3rd too sharp.

When are you going to pull out a horn with both fourth and third valve compensating systems?
@TrentHamilton
@TrentHamilton 6 жыл бұрын
Four valve compensating instruments only tend to compensate when using the fourth valve. I'm not aware of any mainstream instrument that compensates on both the third and fourth valves.

You should try to get a hold of some of the old supposedly legendary trumpets such as the constellation or martin committee and see how they compare to the best modern trumpets.

Hey, Trent! I was wondering if you would be willing to test out and review a trumpet from Wessex-Tubas and give your take on what you think of it. I’m in need of a nice trumpet but I’m on a budget, and I’ve heard some nice things on their company. Just a suggestion, thank you.

Hey Trent I play the Tenor Sax and I am getting a Trombone. My band teacher keeps telling me that I need to get a trombone that is in the key of C. I have searched and searched and not found one. I want to know if a C key trombone is a real thing or is a Bb trombone the main type of trombone? Thank you. -8th grade marching band student
@TrentHamilton
@TrentHamilton 6 жыл бұрын
There are C trombones, but they're very uncommon. When you play a Bb trombone in bass clef, you play it as if it's in concert pitch - IE you see a written C, and you play a note that gives that pitch. But when you play a Bb trombone in treble clef, it is treated as a transposing pitch instrument, like the tenor sax.
