My best plant hack is… pepper spray! I buy a big bag of dried peppers from the store (super cheap) and leave about ten of them in spray bottles full of water in the fridge. If you spray a few times a week it works great as pest prevention AND keeps your pets from trying to eat your indoor plants! 🥵

yeah this is a muchhhhh better idea ever for the succulents too. I think the toothbrush will be just as harsh on the plant and is bulky and for super small nooks if wont fit. a small makeup brush would though. great advice.

One more thing to add to your first part if you don’t mind… When you don’t want to touch the Farina on your succulent leaves, try blowing/puffing the dirt off with a bulb syringe. If you don’t have a bulb during handy, a straw and your lungs will do the job! Just be careful to not to blow in the straw too hard or near the potting medium to avoid a mess of dirt on your shelf 😁

Awesome idea about the sticky roller! That works well with dogs during tick season too. Deer ticks are so tiny! If the roller is too sticky, giving it a roll on your sleeve works great to take some of that tack off. I bet that would work well for plants too, especially with more delicate leaves. The stickiness on those rollers always varies. (I go through a lot of sticky rollers thanks to my animals)

Great tips! I too do a lot of these, but instead of a toothbrush, I use watercolor paint brushes that I bought from the dollar store. I noticed that even with soft bristle toothbrushes, the farina is still disturbed and on my really small succulents I couldn't get into the cracks and crevices like I wanted. But with the paint brushes, the bristles are softer and more flexible and they come in different sizes so I can get in there more better. Also, during the height of the pandemic, I found tons of alcohol hand wipes that I now use to wipe down the leaves of my plants. Not those little ones that they serve you in restaurants, but more the size of actual baby wipes. They help as far as cleaning the leaves and preventing pests.

For terracotta pots you can also buy a sealant which seals the terracotta so the water in the dish does not leech through. Not sure about the UK, but can buy the sealant from a hardware / garden shop.

I was always told to never disturb the roots when repotting unless the plant was severely root bound and then to only loosen them at the bottom. If you play with the roots you stress the plant and repotting is enough of a shock. If it was really badly root bound to cut one third of the roots off.

Plant saucers here for terracotta have all been glazed inside and don't suck the water through like they used to. If you have the time you can paint the inside with a clear sealant and get the same effect! I bought a 3 pack of 3 inch saucers the other day at the dollar store and was pleasantly surprised that even the inexpensive stores had the inside of the saucers glazed! Don't worry though, I'm damaging my furniture in other ways with plants, fortunately, if you add another plant it hides any unsightly damage! 🤣

@@SheffieldMadePlants my dog's food and water bowls are 6 inch terracotta saucers! When I got him, he was too little too reach into a normal dog bowl, turns out even though he's 30lbs, that he doesn't eat much and this guarantees he gets fresh water several times a day so he's never got real pet bowls! I did give him a 2 inch tall cutting board just so his saucers aren't on the floor now that he is bigger though! Lol

My local pho restaurant 🍜, has these clear plastic containers for your soup whenever you order takeout. I poke holes in these containers and use it for my plants as it’s the perfect shape and size for many of my plants. For tip 1- instead of a toothbrush, you should use a fluffier brush like a makeup brush or fluffy paint brush OR I just got Leca that came with free planting tools and one is like a handheld thingy kinda like a giant eyedropper with a big bladder part that if you squeeze it blows hair through the nozzle, perfect for blowing dirt off a succulent. I still can't figure out the purpose of one of the free tools though😂 looks like a weird 2 prong fork with the prongs are in a V shape. Any ideas guys?? Also, I prefer using fruit cup containers for little sized pots over the yogurt containers because they're clear and the ones I buy have no writing on them and are same size as normal yogurt cups. Looks prettier and I can see the roots and how wet the soil is. Just punch drainage holes, take off outer label, perfect!

I spray some Miracle Gro Leaf Shine into a plastic cup and mix it with a little bit of water… then I use (either) an old (but really well cleaned) make-up brush (OR a cheap make-up brush)… The ones that are really for eyeshadow (or are basically bigger than a dinky paint brush that kids get in their watercolor sets for those who don’t use makeup)… The bristles are so nice and soft and really hold onto the liquid nicely, and then I use that to clean my succulents, cacti, and other delicate plants :-)

I like to use Gatorade bottles for moss poles, use hot knife or drill to make cuts to avoid breaking plastic. One thing though, you failed to mention exactly how to make drainage holes in glass jars. For that you will need a special drill bit designed for glass.

Hi, I am watching you from Pretoria, South Africa. I would like to suggest that you use the tip of a soldiering iron to make as many or few holes at the bottom of the pot of your choice. Thank you for your great channel.

I always hear the potatoes/rice/pasta water trick for watering plants, but don't people salt the water before boiling such foods? D:

Why buy heavy glass mason jars when you could just use empty plastic bottles with the bottom cut off ?

You can also paint the bottom of terracotta trays to stop water bleeding through. It’s not as cheap or easy as the cork trivits (definitely got to get me some of those!), but it’s a great, inexpensive way to match the tray to the pot while still getting most of the advantages of terracotta.

I don't think I've ever broken up the roots of a house plant when repotting and they've all survived it. I do get rough with garden plants when I first plant them because I want them to take to the native soil quicker.

Mine is in bright indirect lighting and loving it. It could be it might have a death cage on the roots choking it. I know Costa Farms makes a practice of this sold in big box stores. It is very common now which is sad :(( I feel as though most plantubers when they repot a plant they completely take all the soil off the plant so they can search for that black plastic cage. I guess that would be my only reason to completely take all the old soil off and check its roots before potting.

For alternative pots for tiny plants and newly propagated ones I often use soda cans. They are a decent size for those, and the can will not become brittle, like some plastic containers will over time. Use a can opener to cut the top off. I love the cork mat solution, I haven't thought of that 👍🏻 Using a lint brush to test for bugs is an exellent idea. I'm graciously allowed to share my flat with two cats, so I always have a couple of lint brushes around anyway. To create a high humidity enviroment for baby plants, I've bought some cheap reuseable plastic beer glasses at my local discount grocery store. I think I paid about two pounds for eight of them. They are somewhat opaque, so the plant isn't hit with the full force of sunlight... Not sure if it matters, but they work quite well

It can be good mixed into the soil but wouldn’t add every coffee you make. Might upset the ph balance if too much

Hello, great channel. Wanted to comment I have started using Neem oil with distilled water and a dash of liquid dish soap to spray all my garden and indoor plants, it not only treats guys but cleans the leaves naturally. What do you think? I’m scared of overusing it but now when I don’t use it in just a week leaves turn yellow, mites come back or plants just don’t seem happy or greener shiny enough

Neem oil is good but I’d be weary of dish soap. I’ve got a video on it coming on Wednesday
