As a disabled guy, I never thought I’d be able to see a waterfall in person again. Thanks for showing one that is accessible, if I ever get out to West Virginia
@SueGirling683 жыл бұрын
I'm disabled too and living where I do (Cornwall UK), it has so many stunning places but for people like me most of them are inaccessible, so it's great to see somewhere like this that has made sure people like us don't miss out. xx

Seneca Rocks is impossible unless you're ambulatory. I can't walk far, but I bought a seat-cane and took my time - folding it out and resting when I needed to. Was worth the extra time and effort I spent just to see the view up there! If you get to Spruce Knob, though - the parking-lot is a very short distance to the observation tower, though! The road climbing to the lot takes you almost to the top. The view is nice looking off to Kentucky, but the side of the tower facing Virginia is obscured by the Spruce growing so huge on that side. There are hiking trails there - but getting to the tower is really short and easy!

I haven't been to the Falls in years. They have really done a lot of work on the trail. I am so old that I remember when my Dad and I could hike to the top of the falls. Beautiful place

Hey there Woodsman, I was born and raised in West Virginia. So I have been visiting Blackwater Falls off and on for my entire life. The best visit was once while I was there , the DNR flew in above the pool of the falls in their helicopter and tossed trout into the river. The DNR is the Department of Natural Resources.. Watching them stock fish like this was special.. It was wild..For several years I lived near Parsons WV. A bit remote but overall a fun time. Lots of scenic beauty and wild game. Loads of white tail deer. With an occasional black bear tossed in. I never saw many wild turkeys around here. But other than that game galore.... This area is a playground now, cross country skiing and some good down hill skiing. And some inner tube sledding at Blackwater... A few good places to dine.. Very low crime - rate.... If you ALL are ever near here visit....

Very cool! My grandmother grew up in Depression-era Davis and she and her friends would (apparently) jump off the falls and use this as their 'swimming hole' during the summer. Probably not the safest thing to do.....

Thanks for the coverage of the "Canaan Valley". I'm in Ohio but I've traveled to Blackwater Falls and other places around there (Seneca Rocks, Canaan Valley Resort, the NRAO radio telescope array, etc) several times since the 90s. The region is a peaceful alternative to the crush of people who visit places like the Smokies. The trails down to the falls looked very quiet in this video, I assume because of rain? Usually we had to deal with many more people when we visited. Good stuff.

Used to fish the canyon below the falls. They would stock it by helicopter.
@billdavis6978 Жыл бұрын
The Dolly Sods near these falls are like another world. They used the area to test bombs during WW2 due to the region’s resemblance to targeted areas in Europe. They even have signs instructing people not to take unexploded bombs home as a souvenir. However, you’d really have to go off trail to find anything like that now.

When I attended high school in PA over 40 years ago, it was the custom for the senior year Advanced Biology students to go on a field trip in May to these falls. That all stopped when three students were exploring above the falls. The girl dropped her camera and ventured onto a rock right beside the river to retrieve it. She slipped; fell into the river; was swept over the falls and was killed. Her body was not immediately found and the field trip ended on a somber and tragic note. I have never been back and every time I see these falls, I am reminded of the promising young woman who perished way too young.
