Who is Magnus Carlsen ?
Who is Magnus Carlsen?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnus_...
Sven Magnus Øen Carlsen (Norwegian: [svɛn ˈmɑŋnʉs øːn ˈkɑːɭsn̩]; born 30 November 1990) is a Norwegian chess grandmaster and the current World Chess Champion. In addition to his success in classical chess, he is also a two-time World Rapid Chess Champion and four-time World Blitz Chess Champion. A chess prodigy, Carlsen tied for first place in the World U12 Chess Championship in 2002. Shortly after turning 13, he finished first in the C group of the Corus chess tournament, and earned the grandmaster title a few months later. Carlsen became World Chess Champion in 2013 by defeating Viswanathan Anand. In the following year, he retained his title against Anand, and won both the 2014 World Rapid Championship and World Blitz Championship, thus becoming the first player to simultaneously hold all three titles. He defended his classical world title against Sergey Karjakin in 2016, and against Fabiano Caruana in 2018.
Known for his attacking style as a teenager, Carlsen has since developed into a universal player. He uses a variety of openings to make it more difficult for opponents to prepare against him and reduce the effect of computer analysis. ...
Who is Wesley So ?
Wesley Barbasa So (born October 9, 1993) is a Filipino-American[1][2] chess grandmaster. He is a three-time Filipino Chess Champion and was U.S. Chess Champion in 2017. On the March 2017 FIDE rating list, he was ranked number two in the world and had an Elo rating of 2822,[3] making him the fifth-highest rated player in history.
A former chess prodigy, So became the youngest player to pass a 2600 Elo rating in October 2008, breaking the record previously held by Magnus Carlsen.[4] This record has since been broken by John M. Burke.[5] In early 2013, So passed 2700 and in January 2017 he became the 11th player to pass 2800 Elo.
So represented the Philippines until transferring to the United States in 2014. He won the 2015 Bilbao Chess Masters, the 2016 Grand Chess Tour title after claiming victory in the Sinquefield Cup and London Chess Classic, and the 2017 Tata Steel Masters. He represented the US on board 3 at the 42nd Chess Olympiad, winning team and individual gold.

Not so much the notes (as you are showing us those verbally), but I would like to see the *score* of the game next to the board, if you would be so kind. Just so I can see which move it is, how many moves the game was, etc. Thanks KC--great video!

to hell with the score. engines will never be superior to us as long as they depend on us plugging them into the wall.

In chess the word "score" means the "scoresheet", that is, the moves of the game, written down. The comment did not refer to computers, it was a request to see the moves and move numbers alongside the board.

Carlsen has a penchant for a quiet and slow positional treatment of the Ruy Lopez. For example an early d3 instead of trying to open the centre with an early d4. Both rook pawns on a3 & h3 and a knight that shuffles around to e3! With Carlsen the established theory with vast tomes of theory and book lines, go out of the window!

First video I've seen from you. Huge thumbs up, I love the excitement! Thanks a lot for your knowledge. I presume it's good, but I'm really just a beginner. Getting into different openings and some middle/endgame tactics, but obviously I'm confused :) Please share any sources you find useful for more structured learning, I'm just looking around on youtube, checking out lichess' and chess.com's learning material, but I certainly wanna stretch it a lot further. I like to read, watch videos and play the game. I once met Carlsen in downtown Oslo, where I'm from. He played seven kids at once and he gave every single person a check mate on his 17th move on each board. I was thinking to myself that that has to be incredible. It's incredible, right?

Kingscrusher, at 5:22 why not immediately play Bg6? Yes, it would be hard for even GMs to predict the torment in the next 15 moves, but even we are taught that a knight in 5th rank is "generally" better than a bishop and the opposing side should immediately take it out. And once again, thanks for such hilarious commentary... you describe the torment of the knight pretty well.. it affected EVERY variation...

I haven't fully assessed this game, but bishop takes F3 should've happened a long time ago, could also fuck white's structure up a bit depending on timing. Even if it didn't, it could get black out of trouble. The bishop was in deep shit anyway, may as well exchange for another piece, and then kick the knight.

His plan was to weaken white's queenside structure (hence the a5 move). Meaning he would castle kingside. I suppose he didn't want to weaken the H6 square along with losing his bishop pair. Also, I assume he'd lose tempo attacking that side if he didn't do it straight away as well. I'm a scrub at this game though. I could be wrong.

Why couldn’t black play Bg6? And attack the knight with his bishop

I sense deep seeded hatred for this defense dating back to when carlsen first beat kasparov and kasper didn't shake his hand.

Clearly not. Black was certainly capable of castling far earlier. In particular, f6 was not a great move. Also, black was free to trade the light square bishop via Bxf3 leading to variations where black would be behind, but by far less.

Why not just Magnus Caballus? Great Horse and a pun on his name? Hard to beat. I prefer "caballus" to "equus" but it's worth considering if we want to use the highly prescriptive equus over the Vulgate caballus given the chess context. Magnus Equus would give us a nice double trochee.
