This performance for me, still stands as the most impressive I've ever seen. So much happening at once, but controlled, not messy. Kurona, the taiko drummer, he is also composed the music, plays percussion and is the hype man. Daisuke plays shakuhachi, the wooden flute, he is probably the most impressive to me, just the fact he is doing all that with one breath or little breaths. Beni, plays the shamisen, it is like a Banjo.

“Wagakki” essentially means “traditional instruments”. The band was founded by the singer, SUZUHANA Yuko. The “lute” thing is a Shamisen. The “harp” thing is a Koto. The “flute thing” is a shakuhachi. Yes, you’ve heard these instruments a million times, in movie soundtracks, when they want to convey a Japanese atmosphere. What can I say? America may be the land of innovation in tech, but in music no one here cares any more. All the action has moved to Europe and Japan. Here is a video that really lets you see up close all the instruments and how they work together: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h5idmLqcvNfHXX0.html It was originally written for a “Vocaloid” which is essentially a virtual singer AI.

the long canoe length with many strings is the Koto. the flute/recorder type thing is the Shakuhatchi. The huge drums are Taiko drums. Shamisan means 3 strings, Jose mentioned below. The guitar plays strong melodies , instead od normal impro and riffing. The vocal style is Enka ? I think. The vibrato intervals are bigger than western stuff, so very unique, it is an ancient folk style heavily used in Kabuki theater music, as are the singers fan movements and poses. Just wonderful stuff.

Supplemental. The singer has trained in classical Japanese singing and dancing. Classical training in Japan is way beyond normal western standards perhaps the nearest being classical ballet school. Read any book on the training of Geisha's and you will understand the intense physical and mental pressure students have to endure for years. The shamisen player (banjo) I believe started training at 3 years old!

Recommendations? Everything by them. Sun wheel, Ignite, Sabaku no komoriuta.... They do instrumentals like "Homura" at live concerts only, almost never repeating instrument combination. Pop, rock, jazz, prog, vocaloid covers, folk - they do it all. Even incorporating other forms of Japanese traditional performing arts (like the fan dance and noh mask here). Those two pieces are the guitarist' s compositions. "Homura" is from his solo work before this band, it doesn't originally contain the shamisen solo, and the bass solo is a melody from the bass player song. Last year when they played "Homura" again, the bass solo was different.

What Wagakki mean-- wagakki traditional Japanese musical instrument - (Japanese: 和楽器) in Japan, are musical instruments used in the traditional folk music of Japan. They comprise a range of string, wind, and percussion instruments. Beni plays a Tsugaru-style Futozao (Thick Neck Size) Shamisen. The sharp, flashy style of tsugaru was played in the streets by the bousama (blind musicians) who developed a more lively style. Blind musicians at the beginning of the 20th century, including Shirakawa Gunpachiro,Takahashi Chikuzan and sighted players like Kida Rinshoei developed a new style of play, based on traditional folk songs ("min'yo"), but with a lot Improvisation and eye-catching finger work. based on traditional folk songs ("min'yo"), but with a lot Improvisation and eye-catching finger work. This style - known as Tsugaru-Jamisen, after the native region in northern Honshu - is relatively popular today in Japan. The virtuoso tsugaru jamisen style is sometimes compared to bluegrass banjo. The classic pick is called Bachi. The koto is a Japanese zither and the national instrument of Japan. The bamboo flute is called a shakuhachi and the second drum kit is a wadeiko The singer's very broad vibrato is typical of Shigin, a traditional poem concert style.Suzuhana Yuko, the singer of the Wagakki Band, began studying the piano at age three and shigin and Kenshibu from age five. She graduated from the Tokyo College of Music’s Piano Program. Yuko is currently active as a shigin instructor, singer-songwriter, and pianist. The style of dance that Yuko performs is called Kenshibu ('Sword and Poetry Dance') This is a category of Japanese interpretive dances performed to traditional music with poetry. Kenbu refers to dances that are performed with the help of a sword and Shibu dance with one or more hand fans called Sensu / Ogi (folding fans). The origin is from samurai. In the early Meiji period, Raifu HIBINO (originator of the Shinto school) organized the conventional dancing styles into the current ones by introducing some styles of swordplay. Singing and dancing are performed basically by different persons. The number of performers varies; sometimes one singer and one dancer, but often one singer and two or more dancers. There are no specific costumes for singers, but dancers wear a hakama (divided skirt for men), shiro-tasuki (white sash for holding up tucked sleeves), and shiro-hachimaki (white headband) to express the emotion of the poem.In some dances a fan is used along with a sword. Dancing to shigin with a fan only is called Senbu (literally, "fan dance") or Shimai (literally, "poetry dance"). The mask that Machiya wears is based on the Noe Theater, popular in Japan. Masks are an essential part of the Japanese Noe theater whilst the actors of the Japanese kabuki theater perform without masks. ..

Japan is full of unique bands. So I think so far you've found Wagakki Band, Band-Maid, BABYMETAL,, Doll$Boxx, and at least one female metal band ... For other amazing Japanese bands you might try: Hello Sleepwalkers: punk/rock but better Sokoninaru: take The Kami Band, concentrate then into a female bassist, a male guitar player and drummer, have then play a mix of metal/math core, and sing wild harmonies while they are shedding in some weird time signature, and you'll come close to what this band can do. Kalafina: unfortunately no longer together but this is another amazing vocal group back by piece band usually. Three beautiful Japanese ladies each with unique voices and vocal ranges doing counterpoint harmonies. This group was put together to do anime openings and closings, but they were so good that they stayed together for 10 years to do live shows, it's very rare to hear vocals this good.

This band have a fusion in more ways that looks at first sign. The singer Suzuhana is btw a master of the art chinese poetry recitation, also in the art of kamigata mai (dance with fans), even she can dance with a katana. All the members are masters of their instruments. Btw shamisen is a really difficult instrument. Only have 3 strings (the name of the instrument is originally "three strings") if you loock closely, the shamisen have no freats. A really interesting fusion is a versión of Evanescence´s "Bring me to Live" performed with an orchestra and Amy Lee on stage. They do it some time ago, there´s a video in KZfaq Wagakki is a really popular band in Japan

Thank you for your very positive reaction to WGB. WBG is so unique that it is often misunderstood and underrated even in Japan (many audiences believe the US standard is the best). Traditional Japanese vocalization (vibrato) is generally accepted and often highly rated in Asian countries. In Europe and the United States, it seems that most people hate this very much. I think it's because they are not used to it. It's a natural reaction to hate something you're not used to. There are several types of shamisen (similar to a guitar). The one used here is TSUGARU-SHAMISEN. It resonates well and produces a powerful sound. It is popular in Japan. I am looking forward to the next reaction.

🖐 American here, & not one from the traditional "culture diverse" locations (I'm rural Pennsylvania). I freaking LOVE Shigin, & all the traditional Japanese arts, & I know I'm not the only one. So yeah, it might not be mainstream here (& let's face it mainstream music BLOWS in the U.S. these days), but it is definitely catching on. Especially with people who appreciate REAL good music. We can thank the internet & social media platforms like KZfaq for that, since before now all we had was whatever garbage the radio pumped at us.

I guess I'm typical in that wide amplitude vibrato is irritating to me in MOST genres. In traditional type Japanese music, I can get into it. In other types No. This is my biggest issue with appreciating the majority of Lovebites tunes. All of the members are wonderfully talented, including Asami, but that extreme vibrato in metal she does makes me cringe. (That and the fact their repertoire is laser focused on speed in nearly every song leaves little room for variety. I do like Scream for Me, and the concert version of Swan Song with Miyako's Chopin piano intro/outro, because they are different.) But here, in the traditional Japanese style, I can get comfortable with it.

Hi, I have been following your reactions for Japanese bands only for the last few weeks or so, but I always find your calm and 丁寧な (difficult to translate 1:1 but meaning something like "considerate, polite, thorough") approach and analysis very relatable and satisfying if I may say so. As for Wagakki Band, I really appreciate your open-mindedness and am very glad you liked this piece, especially Akatsuki no Ito* ("Thread of the Dawn") with its Shigin singing as this apparently seems to throw some people off as mentioned in other comments. It may be an "acquired taste" since I myself being from that culture found it needed a little adapting to when hearing it as a child. The band's live perfomances always seem very entertaining and quite an experience with their top-notch professionalism (considered standard in Japan where requirements and bars are set very high, self-discipline and teamwork is the essential virtue since kindergarden, and giving your best and keep on striving for it is regarded a prerequisite to show respect towards your audience, customers etc.). Wishing you good luck, looking forward to your future reactions, and stay safe! *edited for correcting the name

9:16 preach brother... the guitar looking instrument with that massive "pick" that you dig the sound of is called a shamisen... the koto is the instrument that looks like a big slide guitar or harp on its side... if you like the sound of the koto and you like Tool: check out kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mtNims-mmL2wd58.html ... the Japanese know how to rock the f out of traditional instruments as you'll see from this link or Wagakki Band

The singer is Yuko Suzuhana, one of the finest practitioners of shigin, which is what you are entranced by. She also is an accredited teacher of shigin. Her style range is amazing, from rock, pop, folk metal, traditional Japanese, operatic arias and everything in between. Check out Cradle Of Eternity, you'll will be blown away. And you are correct American music sucks, period. It's become soporific and banal and not the rock and roll I grew up with in the late 1950's forward. I was so happy to get interested in this style of music. Keep on reacting to Wagakki Band, you will be pleased.

Wagakki Band is one of the best Japanese groups out there. They combine traditional Japanese instruments and vocal styles with modern rock, metal, jazz, and more. All eight members are master level musicians; and their lead singer, the very elegant Yuko Suzuhana, is definitely the best female Japanese vocalist I have heard. The only other Japanese group that has obtained more international popularity that Wagakki Band is BabyMetal. Wagaki Band is even better live, as their stage shows are musical extravaganzas.

@@hiawatha.g For me, there are two groups that fly over the world of Japanese rock: Wagakki Band and their extraordinary fusion of rock metal and traditional Japanese music and Lovebites, a power metal group, made up of five girls: a super powerful singer, a hellish rhythm section (bass / drums) and two incredibly virtuoso guitarists. See especially live, the concert "Live at Zepp DiverCity Tokyo 2020": phenomenal !!!

@@gillesmurat7362 Oh, I'm already a big fan of Lovebites, they are incomparable. I'm a fan of classic metal (going back to protometal like Purple and Sabbath, both of whom I saw live in their prime). I've played clips from Metallica, Iron Maiden, Priest, Helloween, Dragonforce etc., back-to-back with the most comparable tracks from Lovebites, and the girls are heavier, faster, cleaner, and more melodic than any of those bands. Their transitions are flawless, and when they go slow, especially when Miyako does one of those emotional solos, it’s heart-stopping. Their songwriting is superior--in four years they have already covered most of the ground the classic groups covered, while completely updating it, and they are pushing into new territory. The biggest difference is at drummer--Haruna is a monster back there, and laughs while she's blowing everything up. It's just insane. It's like all those bands were armed with six-shooters, and a new gang showed up in dresses, packing phasers.

Love your reaction. Might I recommend Ningen Isu as another Japanese metal band you might enjoy. They've been playing for around thirty years but only just getting noticed in the West. They've been dubbed by some as "The Japanese Black Sabbath" and you can definitely hear that influence. 'Heartless Scat' is the one that seems to be getting most of the attention but there's plenty to choose from. (Oh, and make sure to have the subtitles switched on; the lyrics are brilliant and deep.)

I enjoyed your pure reaction to this new music world. I had the same kind one 1 year ago. Yes, they have quite wide bandwidth of music, and many of them sound like master pieces! I might recommend “Hakushu Kassai” (Big applause (to you)) as Japanese and Western great pop element combination, merrily encouraging melody, all star instruments solos and Yuko’s great singing as usual. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptpyicaHqraaeWw.html If you love metal-punk, we might pick Senbonzakura; 1000 cherry blossoms...
