A test on the supposedly 2000W 48V wind turbine to see what its output actually is. Here is the finding!
The unit was bought from DoersuppTool Store (www.aliexpress.com/item/33009...)
The inverter was bought from Solar & Electrical Solution Store (www.aliexpress.com/item/32986...) and actually seems decent enough but have not been able to stretch its legs fully!
Conclusion to this video is NOT to buy this unit!

Yes, absolutely. I ordered a 800W turbine from a more reputable supplier and the difference in weight is very noticable. The 800 is about twice as heavy as this supposed "1.2kW".

did you checked open circuit voltage at 1500rpm? this turbine is solid 500W on Chinese market. I did import them as such. AC voltage was abt 70-90V. For me they were ok as 12/24VDC systems( occasionally controller can blow off if battery weren't connected). try to do test with resistive load. like 5ohm?

Great video. What is your oppinion on the inverter that you used in the test? Did you have to modify the dump load that came with it? I've seen some other videos where the same inverter would not allow the turbine to spool because it was always diverting power to the dump load circuit sort of like putting on the brakes all the time.
@williamwofford4919
@williamwofford4919 Жыл бұрын
I found it worked really well, once the dump load was changed. it doesnt dump until it the voltage was getting high from excessive windage
@stephenbuckley2186
@stephenbuckley2186 Жыл бұрын
you need to add more to the dumpload, a metre of nichromewire AWG20 works pretty well, wind it round a bit something non flamable and insulating like some plaster board, reduce the dumpload voltage to about 65 and it should be fine. Its charging up capacitors that puts a drag on it starting. Also once its triggered the over voltage it stays on for a few minutes to lower the voltage then you hear a click as the relay opens again and it will spin up again, unplugging it will speed things up a bit but whenever they start up they have to charge capacitors first and that slows them down. If that didnt happen it would just go straight into over voltage again. The system cant cope with a lot of power coming in quickly like a strong gust of wind.

There was another guy here on KZfaq (John Daniels) touting about how great some of these Chinese made wind turbines work. It's interesting to see his in action and producing such good results. I don't know if there was some other forces at work here hyping the outcome, but it certainly is a head-scratcher seeing the differences in the results. Anyway, I have been advised by a retailer of wind and solar products NOT to invest in any of the 'imported' wind turbines, but if you really want to go the wind route to add to your solar array, then you'll need to spend thousands. Just my thoughts. Great video debunking falsehoods.

Thank you very much, but what I didn't get is how to convert the RPM into wind-speed needed for this RPM of the rotor. I found also exact this Grid-tied Inverter, and looking for about 500 to max 1000 Watt getting from wind, as then in the night my basic usage might be covered. My expected wind-speed as of nearby Lampuhn (Thailand) Airport in 10 Meter high (I install at 12 meter) is average most 2 (4 months with 4 m/s).

@@williamwofford4919 It's very easy to 'hack' this blue inverter. If you open it up, you will see that the very first component is a 3 phase bridge rectifier. You'll see that the positive output of the rectifier is connected to one of the dump load outputs. (so this means you have a positive terminal) If you connect a (substantial) cable up to the other (negative) terminal on the rectifier and feed that out of the box, then you can connect some PV panels and use the inverter to produce useful power on non-windy days. The thing to remember is that the maximum input voltage is 90V so only two panels in series (most panels are 40V or less). I have this exact box and a 500W max turbine and I connect 6 PV panels (3 parallel pairs of 2 panels wired in series). There's no problem having the turbine and the panels working at the same time- just put a couple of PV diodes to prevent the turbine feeding back to the PV array. Can send info if you like.
@stephenbuckley2186

Is it necessary to bypass the rectifier? surley it would sort out the polarity of current coming in, I tried it with one of my 3phase inverters just connected the two leads to two of the inputs and it worked fine but was a bit nervous and only used it till a new solar inverter arrived.

I used to think wind energy, especially VAWT. After seeing many turbines turning, I wanted to really know how much they produce. And eventually I found the company flower turbines publishing scatter plots of their turbines. It was an eye opening experience, as they just told the truth: the small ones really don't produce a lot of energy. A spinning turbine doesn't mean power, the plots show it has to get windy to get any ROI on it. And that's what they say: first test your environment and always augment with other means. Another thing they showed is that you need a cluster of VAWTs to get more out of it. But yeah, wind turbines usually are disappointing.

That’s the first time I’ve seen one of those turbines rated at 2000 watts. Normally they call them 400 watts, which is still over rated. I wish there was standard wind speed for turbine ratings. Your turbine probably has a 1 meter rotor. I have a new turbine coming that is also rated at 2000 watts. It’s rotor has a 4 meter diameter. It will produce 2000 watts in a 23.5 mph wind.

If the stator coils were air core, then the output would continue climbing even though the blades would have flown off at the higher revs. So this is an iron-cored stator to make the most of the PM's at low speed. The original idea was for slow and steady wind turbines, no iron means no cogging and can use our UK low wind speed average on a short tower. We expect too much, it's just a little bit of standby power or small well-water pump thing. 2kW is a serious pylon 4 metre blade installation.
@stephenbuckley2186
@stephenbuckley2186 Жыл бұрын
I have a ista breeze i 2000 and it has 2.2 metre blade span, iron cored, quite bad cogging compared to my home built air cored turbine which starts in almost no wind. The ista breeze takes quite a bit more wind to start but I have seen 1700 watts from it, wouldnt want it go much faster than that, the most I have seen from my home made is about 900 watts with a similar blade size also home made but far less efficient I think. Maybe one day I will swap blades but ballancing would be really difficult on a machine that cogs I think. I use the same gridtie inverter type, one rated at 1 kw and the other at 2kw

The Chinese manufacturers don't lie, they are rating the turbines on the American regime of instantaneous power. IE shorting the turbine at rated rpm and recording the shorted amperage by the rated voltage or sometimes by the open circuit voltage. The EU adopted the BS standard years ago which is a continuous output at 10.5 M.S.

Good video In my opinion any generator if it does not exceed at least 1000 rpm will always have a lower than average efficiency, to make this possible you need to mount larger blades and a speed multiplier. To have a lot of strength we will lose a few laps but we would have more torque immediately. It is necessary to use a multiple even greater than 6. What do you think, engineer? Let's think of the old windmills ..

*All practical tests show that small wind turbines hardly generate any electricity. And only at costs above 1$/kWh!* There is hardly any wind near the ground. And it is also very gusty, which extremely reduces the service life of the systems. *With solar systems, you can reliably generate electricity for about 8-12 cents/kWh over a period of 25 years!*

poor dude, most Chinese Watt labels are HIGHLY exaggerated (be it on wind turbines or inveters and converters or powers supplies) ista breeze! the only one that is kind of producing as much as labeled is the (also China) produced ista-breeze series :D but thanks for testing that crap! X-D preventing hopefully from precious resources to be wasted. have you found a good solar + wind + battery charge controller? :D (there are SOOOO MANY X-D and the Chinese support is crap and most do not have vendors in Europe... so everyone sooner or later spends the extra money and goes back to Victron)

I can tell you right off the hop, that is not a 2000 W turbine. Lol it might have 2000 W before it blows up at 65 m/s wind or 150 miles an hour. In my opinion a 2000 W wind turbine should have a blade diameter close to 3.2 m or 10.5 feet. This was my guess one minute and 30 seconds into your video. Lol, when I finish the video, I wasn't surprised that you got maybe a 300 W Turbine. I do like your set up for testing. What would be more interesting is what would the wind speed need to be to even get 500 W.

is a 15kw motor but variable controlled. You need both volts and amps for power, both go hand in hand.

The 'vertical lantern style' are advertised at between 400 to 4000 watts are lucky to output 40 watt at 25 knots of wind. It is a scam, not a faulty device.

No - the output was grid tie so it can push as much power as it gets from the wind turbine. the grid is the load

That is the 400W model. It is sold as a 400W by credible sellers. You probably bought it from a dodgy seller who labelled it 2000W . A 1,000W generator (let alone a 2,000W one) is a gigantic thing.
