In this macro photography tutorial, we are using light and colour to create some abstract images of metal offcuts from CNC machining (aka swarf).
We are going to be challenged by a highly complex and reflective subject that has no specific point of focus. We're talking about adding colour and lighting to make the most of a subject like this to create some abstract images.

What a neat idea! Now I just need to find a place to get metal shavings. Thanks for sharing this idea, especially at a time that we are in quarantine with the Covid-19 virus. New ideas for photography are especially appreciated.

Thanks Betty! Ask around locally, I'm sure someone knows someone who has access to this stuff. It's Called "swarf" and it's a waste product, so you should be able to get some for free when manufacturers throw it out.

@@Adaptalux Thanks I found some easily and cheaply on Etsy. They had a lot of different metals, too.

Of course, now I have to find some other creative ways to photograph them since I can't yet afford even the basic Adaptalux. Someday.....

Any light source should be ok for this kind of stuff. It might be a little harder to control and get the desired colours etc, but it's worth a shot!

Hi Ben, this stuff looks so cool! I love one of the final shots around 12.25 with the main curly wire in focus. We’re not in lockdown in oz, but should it happen, I won’t be bored! Stay safe. Andrea (Australia) 😊

A really interesting video subject today Ben. I would like to have a go at this but unfortunately i don't have a CNC machine in my shed and there are no manufacturing sites around here. You mention wire wool, i wonder if that would work or is that going to be too fine?
@Adaptalux
@Adaptalux 4 жыл бұрын
I've not done wire wool yet, but I imagine that would be very similar if you can get much closer. You might be surprised at what you can find locally, this stuff is called "swarf" in to the manufacturing minded folks (so Sam informs me!). It comes in many forms, almost always as a waste product that people are tying to get rid of. Ask around, it's not hard to procure if you want some to play with!

This is a random question. If you built your own table surface specifically for macro photography what width and length would you suggest for the table surface?
@Adaptalux
@Adaptalux 4 жыл бұрын
I'd say at least 1m x 1m would do. any smaller and you will restrict yourself with the placement of your subjects, camera and lighting.

Would love to see some of those bits places in a small Petri-type dish, half-submerged in water and using some of your lighting from underneath (as well as above). (don't you love arm-chair quarterbacks?) ;)
