Exploration of mark making with oil paint on stretched canvas. 20" × 20" (gesso primed)
I thought it would be interesting to show this compilation of edited videos showing how I try out ideas for future work.
Canvas has the advantage of being able to remove the paint and experiment with adding layers. The work shown is not meant to be a resolved and finished piece but a series of experimental processes that could develop further and expand the mark making into a final painting or series using techniques discovered during these experiments.

Love your process and work. This would work really well with Golden OPEN acrylics. They are slow drying.

Ok nearly 12 at night and I'm about to gesso a canvas now for tomorrow to play with, hoping I can achieve similar effects with the water mixable oils I have, thanks Dan Ps ordered David Friends book :)

I hope it works for you, I haven't tried the water mix oils, but I will make sure to grab a tube on my next art shop visit , it would make an interesting demo. Glad you got a copy of the book, I will be filming some more demos based on it soon, it is a very inspirational read. About this demo I try to create a very smooth surface to work on (almost like paper) I use the gesso to remove the weave of the canvas.

fab work this. I have tried your painted sheet and biro(??) techniquebut without your delicate results! I use acrylic maybe that is the problem but I am allergic to the smell of oil paint! I tried to access your shop cos I would love to buy a canvas of your work but I could not get in. I think you are renovating it. When you get it back maybe you can highlight that. LOve the mysterious nature of your work. Best R

Hi Robert, thanks for the feedback on this demo, I'm trying to post a new video every day throughout July so I will be showing more examples of the monoprinting techniques using a variety of surfaces and mediums including water based acrylic and printing inks. The fast drying time of acrylic causes problems and it is a thinner paint. Using a texture paste and a retarder may help so I will try to film a demo of this. The shop will be updated soon with new work, thanks for the interest.

Hello Mater Dan,,,,, What are the types of plastic sheets you are using to apply the black and red paints? What are they called and what is the source? it should be a specific one or can I use any type of plastic sheet?

Use any type of thin plastic, bin bags or freezer bags would work. Always recycle and most plastic can be used many times.

This is not paper but recycled PLASTIC, you can now buy this from my website.

Hello Master Dan. I don't stop studying your videos. In the present video, I see that you're using a liquid to brush away paint and get again a part of the white background. May I use "white spirit", or a similar product, to have the same result ? Many thanks in advance if ... - Best greetings from an addicted "student" ! ✋🙂

Yes that would be OK to use white spirit, turpentine works as well. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching the videos.
