I can remember jammin' out to this back in High School. Fyi originally done by blues great Leadbelly in the 1930s.

I turned 15 in 1970 first concert I went to was James Cotton with "Matt Guitar Murphy" opening for Johnny Winter! I saw Johnny and Edgar Winter a few times back then. I grew up in Los Angeles so I got to see every major band in the world back then.

The Band - King Harvest guitar - Robbie Robinson bass - Rick Danko Drum/backing vocal - Levon Helm Organ - Garth Hudson Piano / lead vocal - Richard Manuel this group has 3 lead vocalist who share singing duties on every album (Levon, Rick and Richard) Richard has the most range from baritone-falsetto. Richard for the body of the song is singing in his Baritone but goes up high for the chores with Levon singing the low end. The original song was written and performed by a black man, even before Leadbelly. The song was written about a black musket in the 1800s and the sound it made was bam-a-lam. The song came out in the 1970s and the largest markets NY and California wouldn't play it because they said it was racist. If they had played it, it probably would have made #1.
