Academy's Boeing AH-64D Block II Apache kit in 1/72 scale has great detail and builds well out of the box. The Apache shown carries markings from the A-1-227 ATKHB 'Avengers' in Iraq 2003.
To make things a little more interesting I wanted to show the model in flight and built a small display base. Launching a Hellfire missile adds dynamism to the model and was easier to implement than I thought. I used figures from PJ Productions which fit perfectly in the cockpit.
The not-so-colorful color scheme was airbrushed using Hataka's C067 US Army Helicopter Drab (FS 34031). The dark colors definitely need some help with oils, filters and pigments to bring out some highlights and shadows.
All in all a very satisfying build that I can only recommend. Enjoy the build, paint and weathering process and feel free to leave a comment.

So glad I found this, I had exactly the same idea of a missile going off buy no idea how to do it! Would be good to know, it that like a clear plastic rod you used? I was thinking I would need some wire, but that looks much better?

Thank you for your comment. I used a clear acrylic rod but the paint basically covers everything so you can also use a non-transparent rod. In contrast to wire, the solid rod can be aligned better and the rocket is simply glued to the tip. The exhaust jet of the Hellfire is very straight and smoke is mainly produced when ignited. It was my first attempt but I'm very happy with it...just try it out. Regards ScalerDan

May I ask what size rods you used ?

I used 2mm acrylic rod for the rocket and 6mm for the helicopter. Regards ScalerDan
