Anyone who plays Tracy always gets “discovered” because Hollywood doesn’t normally cast plus-size leads

It really disappoints me that she wasn't included in all the hype for Hairspray live the way Marissa Jarret Winouker and Rikki Lake were. Just because the 2007 movie's plot doesn't match the plot of the 1988 movie or the original Broadway production doesn't mean it wasn't just as good as the two because, in my opinion, it was. I LOVED the 2007 movie. It was the movie that constantly played on repeat in my house for the entirety of 2008. And Nikki was the first Tracy I was exposed to, and she was just as much Tracy as Marisa and Rikki and Maddie Ballio will be. I just wished they included her in the hype for Hairspray Live because she deserved to be.

Let's be real tho, very rarely now a days are "open castings" open. They usually contact who they have in mind for it before hand which near enough always happens. If you genuinely get a role from an open casting its pure luck, so many times ive been to open castings and I've met with other audintonees and they say they had been scouted for it, or the production company had been coming to view their shows before hand and asked them to audition. It's often rigged.

Well I mean he literally did cast a teenage overweight actress so clearly he did something to change it
@Macallion
@Macallion 4 жыл бұрын
@@curiousitykilledthecat9933 He cast ONE, and only because he had to. If he (or anybody else) had been even a little bit open to casting one previously, there would have been somebody on that list. But there wasn't even one person on it. And they didn't even learn from it, since she only ever seems to have been cast in struggling-with-weight roles afterwards, according to a previous commenter. They made a movie about diversity and inclusion and they learned nothing.
@Likewhoa300
@Likewhoa300 4 жыл бұрын
Macallion I totally agree. This has been a big problem for such a long time and the casting directors need to do more to make Hollywood more inclusive. It starts with casting more body types in all roles, not just roles that are SPECIFICALLY meant for an overweight character. This is similar to the idea of simply casting a POC in a role that is not specifically meant for a POC. Until there is true inclusivity in Hollywood we will keep getting the same whitewashed, overly thin, generically beautiful people we have been seeing on screen for decades. It’s so played out and yet, so many films and shows end up with the same typical looking actors in the lead roles, with some POC or a heavier person on the side in the name of “diversity”.

I am an actor who has been pursuing this profession for over 20 years. I have my bachelors and masters degree in performing arts. From the very beginning I was told how good I was. And before I knew it I created quite a reputation for myself and landed one great role after another. But as soon as I got out of college all of that stopped. I know I’m good and fully believe that I have something to contribute in the profession but it feels less and less likely to happen. I want it so bad. Are there any other actors that have been at it for awhile out there that dream of their big break?
@giorjett13
@giorjett13 4 жыл бұрын
j2rizzo I can’t really say much on this but I saw your reel. I think in any career the key is to stand out. Not saying it from a critical point of view, I mean it as a general opinion. Think outside the box, create your own characters like Johnny Depp does because if you have that ability no one can replace you. Build your own brand and using any platform you can to gain a following. Everything is digital now a days and our social media or social image is our portfolio. Use your KZfaq channel to your advantage. Don’t give up on your dreams and wait for someone to discover you. Always keep pushing and never settle for where you are. Not in life nor in your abilities, always improve! Best of luck ❤️

not an actor, but i’m a musician, so the journey is similar. sometimes talent is just the tip of the iceberg of what you need to become successful in the entertainment industry. you have to network A LOT (you know the phrase “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”). keep in touch with/make friends who are actors, directors, producers, etc. if you’re offered an opportunity, no matter how amateur, take it & gain experience/connections. if you can, get an agent/manager/publicist to help book gigs for you. good luck! i believe in your talent! EDIT: the person above me makes a point in using social media for portfolios, auditions, & sketches. the internet is a damn powerful thing :)

@Pat Fry Pat Fry Good point. I actually get that a lot. Funny story: I once auditioned for this play and in the middle of my monologue the director stopped and said, "If I were you, I'd go back to Mcdonalds where I assume you came from. This isn't the profession for you." This was in front of an entire auditorium. Everyone laughed. ha ha ha ha! I cried like the whole way to the hospital. After my mom passed away that night she said something I'll never forget. "You might not make money as an actor, but acting won't make you happy. Be a good person. Be kind and be you. Those things are priceless" I had a huge epiphany that some dreams aren't worth chasing, you know? So I'm still working at Mcdonalds. But, it's really okay because I'm an optimist and I'm crossing my fingers in hopes that I become manager some day. Who knows, maybe I'll see you come through drive through some day. ha ha lol. I don't know anything about you but I get the impression you know a ton about acting. Do you have any suggestions on how to be better or do you think I should just stick with my day job? HA HA HA HA LOLOLOL! But seriously, thanks for the observation. It really helped.

I mean it's such a ruthless industry there has to be this fiery want. Stopping at no ends to accomplish what you want doing whatever it takes... sounds horrible but it's the sad truth to be successful in the industry from what I hear you have to play there game or whatever that means yk

I hope someday I could be part of the movie/film world. I could be a costume designer and dress plus size ladies since some designers tend to compromise on their design because the actor wasnt a size 0 model. When the worldwide search for Scarlett O’Hara from Gone With The Wind was happening, Paulette Godhard was a second runner up for the role and the search for Scarlett involved girls from hair salons, diners, finishing schools and boutiques and there were none that would fit the bill as Vivien Leigh did when she, Paulette, and a few other actresses did screen tests for the film and Scarlett O’Hara was really seen in Vivien Leigh just like Nikki Blonsky was perfect for Tracy Turnblad.

In a pure numbers game for this; the pregnant woman should have been chosen to live instead of them bickering over it (I have seen the movie btw) bc shes 1 person carrying another person, it's the only way to have the largest number of people survive. Personally, id have gone through with what the surviving character promised to do before he fucked them over.

I would of said the opposite, i thought dove stole the show and tracy was just 'nice'- she lacked attitude or sass

In case you've confused your adaptations, this video's about the 2007 movie, which decidedly did not flop. Not sure about Hairspray Live which I believe is the one you're referring to.
