A good question. I've always wanted to go into animation so I applied to Sheridan in addition to CalArts. I considered OCAD, but their animation program was too experimental for my liking. My time was also limited and I needed to make hard decisions about which schools I should/shouldn't apply to. In the end, I had to choose between Sheridan and CalArts, and although the former is a great program, much cheaper, and will find you a job, I was drawn to CalArts because of the people who go there. A large number of artists I admire go to that school and I want to constantly be challenged by them. I would also say that CalArts is more experimental in their approach to style, which is certainly helped by the sense of unity between programs that encourages collaboration. Of course, I had many other reasons too (location, the fact that you have to make 4 films at CalArts instead of 2 at Sheridan, etc.), but I could go on forever. I'll never truly know what Sheridan is like, but so far I'm loving it here :)

Hey! As simple as it sounds, my daily life inspired by subject matter. Because your ability to draw from observation matters a ton in your CalArts portfolio, I would draw anything interesting I saw around me wherever I went (these included people, animals, and environment). Anytime I'd draw, I'd ask myself: what story do I want to tell? what mood/atmosphere do I want to express? I think focusing on story is crucial to your work, because it's what film is - using character, motion, timing, lighting, colours, and dialogue to convey a story. Also, I haven't done it well in my sketchbook, but what you could do next is transform your observational work - this is what I mean: images.app.goo.gl/tv3SP8Gr2tBdyi3r6. Essentially, the artist has used observations from real life to influence their designs. This shows them your creativity and your investigative abilities. The character animation portfolio requirements on the CalArts website are pretty broad, but for a reason. They just want to see who you are as an artist, and your interests will be shown by the direction you take. In terms of process, I started building my portfolio ~7 months before it was due, but it proved to be not enough time for me to complete it without spending every waking hour over the winter break cramming sketchbook work. I had a pretty intensive gr. 12 year (take into account balancing school work + extracurriculars + college apps), so timelines may be different for you. Though I "started" by portfolio 7 months before the deadline, I started building up my life drawing skills long before then. I took life drawing classes to help me prepare in previous years. I can't tell you how many times I've felt insecure with my own art especially when I looked at other people's work, how many sketchbook pages I covered up and restarted, but overall, the process was still rewarding because by the end, I could see real improvement. lemoncholy WOW! I can’t thank you enough for this detailed response, so grateful that you took the time of day. I am not so sure I have the skills yet with digital to apply for cal arts, or the budget to be honest. But I would LOVE to get into risd. I just feel so insecure about my portfolio I honestly don’t know what to do about it aside from keep pushing through. I am in the summer before my senior year, and I may take a gap year to give myself more time. Do you have any links to your portfolio, or tips on how to get started with digital works.

@@ang1692 yeah it's tough and tuition is a bit of a nightmare! I haven't published my CalArts portfolio online (if you haven't already you can view the RISD one on my channel), but a simple web search should get you many varied examples. As for how to get started with digital works, I would recommend following accounts on social media that inspire you, and attempting to recreate their work (you'll notice a lot more details). Also, there are tons of tutorials online, and it's nice to see how artists get from sketch -> finished product. It's not always about the program or the brushes you use, but good programs and good brushes will make it easier for you to draw what you envision. I guess before you get carried away with downloading the best brushes, try to create art using only the default brush on your program - you'll learn important things about colours, blending, and texture that'll inform you where your skills are lacking + what brushes you should look for. And yes, keep pushing through! It's the only way you get better. I'm rootin for ya :D

watercolour, gouache, some acrylic, prismacolor scholar colour pencils, cheap markers, construction paper - basically anything I can get my hands on

There are tons of art schools out there, all with different standards + who look for different kinds of people. I'm sure you'd be able to. But, you'd be amazed by how much you can improve in the span of 2 years (so long as you're diligent and keep practicing) - I've seen some of my own classmates do it. Best of luck!
