Tufts interviewed me and told me I'd be hearing back from them with good news hopefully very soon. And then proceeded to ghost me for months. Not a great reflection on them, but Columbia, girl...that's amazing. 2 interviews and both accepted you, that's a great position to be in. I can just picture you sick with COVID but then getting this news freaking out! I remember my acceptance email like yesterday, best day of my life.

Haha I honestly would be so skeptical if someone told me they’d give me good news right after an interview bc they’re technically not allowed to let you know anything before acceptance day. And lol thank you! Honestly I can still remember how terrible I felt physically that day and then opening those emails instantly made me forget about all of that 🥰

Hi :) First, Congrats!!!! Columbia and NYU are my top Schools, and dream schools in NYC ! Second, thank you for sharing, and makes us feel that anything is possible. You are so sweet and humble, I wish you all the best. Lastly, I also live in NYC, I'm trying to get in Dental Hygiene, but looking forward in the future to apply in a Dental School . I was wondering what extracurriculars did you performed, as well what College did went for undergrad? When you think in those school, people (me) tends to thinks that you need to do a lot, therefore I was wondering how true is that. Again thanks for all the information, I am so happy to have found you since we live in the same city :)

Hi Nicole! I went to Macaulay Honors College at Hunter and tbh I didn't participate in that many extracurriculars in undergrad. I financially supported myself and had to maintain a good GPA to keep an academic scholarship so I usually worked 2-3 jobs, which included an internship at a dental stem cell bank, tutoring for high school student athletes from low income neighborhoods, and other private tutoring. I did do a lot of dental shadowing with different specialists and general dentists, which I think is most important in terms of experiences for dental school. Feel free to check out my admissions playlist which covers a lot of other topics in applying to dental school and lmk if you have any other questions! :)

Hi, did you apply very early by chance and did you do research/ masters ? Thanks
@SmilesPending
@SmilesPending 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam! I applied as soon as the cycle opened in 2020 and no I did not do a masters or wet lab research. I think I’m general applying as early as possible (given that everything is ready) is the best way to give your application a good chance at competitive schools. The longer you wait the smaller your chances in general. I did work at a dental stem cell banking company that can be considered research but I didn’t work in a lab or get my name in a publication. I didn’t feel I needed those things with my DAT score and extracurriculars ☺️

Congrats on getting in. A difficult task but worth it at the end. Just wanted to comment at the end of your video when you suggest that the other schools never gave you an invite because your stats are way too good. That is a bit arrogant to think this way as with dental school everyone has a competitive profile. It would be more humbling if you can just realize and admit that there are other applicants that may have a better profile/stats than you and cheaper tuition dental schools are always very competitive to even get an invite. NYU/Columbia are very expensive programs and people tend to apply more to the cheaper schools than expensive.
@SmilesPending
@SmilesPending Жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle. So I think maybe you missed the point of what I was saying, because the application process was a truly humbling experience in many ways as I’ve stated in the video. The schools I’m referencing at the end are both private, relatively high-tuition schools where they publicly post their average accepted stats and mine were above their average. I don’t think I was too good to be accepted at those schools, but my point was that there’s no such thing as a safety dental school like there is in undergrad. And I personally have spoken to admissions reps who do look at students above their average and debate whether to accept them based on the likelihood they’ll go there. Not just pulling that out of thin air, it’s based on my personal experience ☺️

@@SmilesPending very interesting. Considering I am a recent dental graduate and never heard a school not giving someone an invite based on the assumption of whether they will be interested in going there or not. Perhaps if you were from California and never stepped foot in the east coast then I could see schools favouring their in state or surrounding areas more. But the fact you are from the east coast and surrounding that region that is very difficult to believe. No offence it’s just doesn’t happen in dental school where an applicant is way too competitive that they don’t get an invite or they make an assumption that you won’t go there (as I mentioned above with the California example). Especially the fact you applied to competitive schools like UCONN, Stoney that are cheap tuition schools (very competitive) and Tufts. Like I said for dentistry, name brand in dental school doesn’t matter to applicants because no one wants to come with almost a million dollar debt when they graduate. That may be a big deal for undergrad but definitely not dentistry.
@SmilesPending
@SmilesPending Жыл бұрын
Again, I’m not referencing the state schools that are cheap tuition and obviously very competitive and also tend to favor in state residents, I knew going in that my chances at a state school weren’t high. And even though you may not have heard of it, ALL schools in one way or another make the consideration of whether an applicant will choose to attend when they extend an acceptance. It wouldn’t make sense for them to formulate a potential class list just to pull most applicants from the waitlist when people start declining offers. I’m not so arrogant as to think I deserve a spot at a school because of my stats. The comment I made was an assumption based on average accepted student stats BEFORE I went though the application cycle. As I mention in the video, it isn’t a numbers game and the entire application matters.
@Micheadle
@Micheadle Жыл бұрын
@@SmilesPending I respectfully disagree. And I have sat as a student rep for my dental school interview. The narrative you are mentioning about admin deciding what their potential class they would formulate is AFTER the interview has been done and they asked those specific questions that give them a feel of the applicant which would give them a good idea if they will commit to their program or not. NOT before even seeing them or hearing their story. To them(admin), everyone who has applied is interested in their program. They aren’t going to restrain themselves for a few applicants who may have stellar stats based on assumptions. In fact, aside from the waitlist in interviews, they provide extra spots for those they are very interested in on paper alone or legacy parent (sad truth but it happens). The waitlist is for that very reason you are stating, in case someone declines the invite (if there program was conflicting with a more desirable school or they simply had second thoughts). To make a bias judgment based on paper is not effective approach and simply unheard of from any dental school. Whether instate or not, the point I am sticking to is there is no school that looks at a paper and says they are too competitive and probably won’t pick us. And regardless if you are instate or out of state, both schools I mentioned above are still cheaper tuition wise as the Boston, Penn and New York schools.

Not really sure tbh! You can always look at the name of the school and Google cost of attendance. Most schools have a clearly outlined pdf of what it will cost each semester.

With everything included (tuition, fees, living, food and other expenses) my first year bill was $127,000. Multiply that by 4 and that would be the cost of attendance, not including interest of course 😭

@SmilesPending

Depends on the individual person! Usually it ranges from 10-30 years after graduation. Most of the time people will pay it off like a mortgage for a house (30 years) so that the monthly payments aren’t so crazy high
