Thank you to Jenny and of course to the excellent staff at Rails - a fantastic insight into just how enthusiastic these model shops are - Rails I rate right at the top (and did do in that recent survey) !! What a 'collection'. Presented to Jenny with such care and passion, you'd almost think they'd feel bad about selling them!!

Just watching this again as Rails was prob first rly model shop I used to visit in the early 90s. They hv come along way since the single one longways counter shop with John, Ben Jones and Bill, cheerful soul that he was. Wonder if they still send out for the fish and chips 😁

this was fascinating. wow. I inherited my father model railway collection, which would probably fill the downstairs of their warehouse when they showed that 'bus' model. But I don't think a shop in Wales, past the end of the M4, would be popular.... :( . But we have enough to open a shop of second hand models right away. My hat goes off to the Rails team, awe inspiring.

This is the perfect antidote to manufacturers and stockists in all industries who insist that "just in time" is essential, and the "cost" of holding stock is such that it makes a business unviable!

I have got one of those Mamod steam sets. I can confirm the track width is O gauge. However, you can't run the Mamod on track with plastic sleepers because there is fire underneath the boiler. As I remember it, you could get Mamod points at the time, but these are unobtainable now. Compared to other life steam, Mamod is a very simple loco which uses solid fuel. It runs very smoothly and is quite a pleasing thing to have in the garden. It is not so good indoors as it makes a smell. If Rails will let you have it for a decent price, I would have it. Thanks for uploading your intriguing visit to Rails.

Sounds interesting they may be expanding more into HO...the German stuff esp is fantastic, trains and scenery items. That stock room with the racks looks like my place...Love the rummage through the Rivarossi items.

I sometimes call in to Rails on my way to the football. I never knew how big this place was! It's a shame they are unable to display much more of their stock. They could do with kicking Lidl out of their unit across the road.

Any fine scale O gauge? I would like an early livery BR Brunswick green Lee Marsh Jubilee, been looking for one for ages! I know that they do sell high end fine scale O gauge, I am not a collector, just London Midland steam locos.

Rails of Sheffield and Hornby have now parted company. Hattons and Bachmann before them I hear. What is going on one wonders. Stories of retailers hoarding and buying up stock to inflate prices and push out the smaller business’s as Lockdown struck. Ouch. Or undercutting too much for comfort. Retailers trying to become manufactures and at who’s expense, mmm I’ll be sticking with Hornby. Yes, that Terrier has a nasty nip. Well... in hindsight... Hornby has been extremely helpful to me over the years along with Bachmann in the last few months. My concerns when getting back into this great hobby again, just over 8 years ago, still are that anyone new to modelling, may find Rails of Sheffield... err... and Hattons too, a little less than helpful in pointing you in the right direction. I felt more like an inexperienced apprentice being sent to the factory stores to ask for Tartan paint than a customer about to make a hefty investment. Maybe the shop assistant was too proud to say at that time DCC was out of his depth, who knows. Luckily one Gentleman at Rails broke rank, actually smiled, yes honestly he did and took me under his wing otherwise I’d be still soldering electro frog points on my DCC layout today no doubt. Yes, you may want to do that but, I find insulfrog have no issues on modern points with modern manufactured, clean locos. Smiling Pete was correct. Maybe I don’t fit the modeller mould as I’ve found there’s a certain personality trait associated with this hobby that seems to get more respect with shop staff, once you venture into this world. Hopefully that will change Jen :)
