Wanna access your 3D printer on your smart watch? On your TV? Via Telegram? Via a Desktop App on your computer? On vacation? Or even on a WIDGET on your phone's home screen?
YES, YOU CAN!
Many of you may have Octoprint set up on your 3D printer via a simple RaspBerry Pi... but unless you've done a good bit of research/hacking/tweaking, it probably ends there. So when you are 3D Printing something but want to leave the house, you have no access to the printer...
In this video, I'm going to show you how to make your OctoPrint enabled 3D Printer accessible ANYWHERE you go - even from across the world - using OctoEverywhere. It's an alternative to The Spaghetti Detective, but unlike The Spaghetti Dective, OctoEverywhere allows you to use custom apps, like OctoPod... and you'll see why that's important in just a second. Finally, you can keep an eye on your 3D Printing, no matter where you go!

You didn't mention the imho best way: setup an access to your local network via VPN an do everything you can do being @home. Most routers make it easy to do so. Keep on going, your videos are great. 🙂

Yeah, this is pretty advanced for most people, though, and I understand there are some security risks?

@@thenextlayer Being online is a security risk. But I trust an open source protocol more than any company’s app. And setting up a VPN is in many routers firmware quite easy. As a German I use AVM‘s FritzBox routers, they guide you through the setup in around 15 minutes.

I wonder, is there any good reason for sticking with Octoprint now that there is support pretty much for all printers in Klipper? Less plugins in Klipper, sure, but you wont miss them after a while.

My printers don't run on Klipper, and when I've looked at converting them to Klipper, it's always seemed too intimidating, and like I'll have too much downtime that could be spent printing. If there were an easier way that was plug-and-play, I'd do it, but I don't like tinkering with my printers more than I have to... that said, I REALLY want Klipper for the faster printing speeds.

@@thenextlayer It's very easy to get Klipper running. Not one-click-easy, but easy nonetheless. You'll kick yourself eventually for not doing it sooner.

Also, there is guides and configs for like 95% of all printers.

@@thenextlayer It's not all that difficult to get Klipper working on most printers - especially if you start out using one of the sample config files available on the Klipper web site, but it does take some time to dial in the configuration. That said, some manufacturers are starting to pay attention and provide printers that run Klipper. Creality's new "Sonic Pad" looks like a good option if you're willing to spend $159, but right now it only includes firmware for their newer printers. I'm still tempted to try it with my Ender-3 Pro. I've got my Ender-3 Pro running on Klipper right now, using a Raspberry Pi. It took a couple of days to dial it in, but I haven't started trying to push the print speeds just yet. I'm happy with it, especially since Input Shaping got rid of the ringing and Pressure Advance helped with corners and stringing. And tweaking settings is a simple matter of editing the printer.cfg file. If I decide to go back to Marlin, it's just a matter of popping the SD card with the firmware on it into the printer and restarting it. (I also kept the OctoPi SD card from my Raspberry Pi just in case.)

You go into the conf files and rename their localities, for example i have Prusa.local and Creality.local (each running on their own pi)

As you having two printers also take a look at OctoFarm! :) It's a pretty handy tool to manage multiple printers. Awesome channel you're building up, can't wait for a Discord or sth. similar for the growing communitY! :)

Just set up a VPN server on your network and you will always have access to your home network. I use WireGuard and once setup, it works flawlessly.

I agree with JJTVism - a VPN is by far the best option. No, it's not super easy to setup, but neither is OctopPi. TailScale is as easy or maybe easier than setting up OctoPi. ZeroTier is probably just as easy, but I haven't tried it.
