Accidental Discharge/Negligent Discharge

Recently I attended a match and a friend of mine had an incident where he inadvertently discharged his firearm. Luckily he followed some basic firearm rules and the bullet sailed towards the target. I wanted to post this video to emphasize how important firearm safety is and it can happen to experienced shooter also. It’s not limited to new shooters. This may get a laugh from someone who isn’t responsibility with a rifle, but it’s really embarrassing to someone that takes pride in firearm safety. I was hesitant to post for that reason. I know this guy personally and he took this hard. It can happen and if you shoot a lot I’m sure one day it will happen to you. This past summer it happened to me. I watched this video multiple times in slow motion and wanted to share.

Another top notch video Joe. Thank you for sharing it. I can see how a simple slip could be costly. That middle finger could catch anyone off guard. Keep up the great work.

We had a negligent discharge at a church clay pigeon shoot. An older gentlemen was shooting a pump shotgun and wasn't getting it into battery, shot one into the ground. It's scary.

I haven't had an NG yet. YET! I've been shooting for fifty years and carrying almost every day. But that doesn't mean I won't have one. With the pressure of a shooting competition and the interference from the gear he was carrying I can see it happening quite easily. At least he practiced good muzzle discipline which helped to mitigate the NG/AG. I've seen experienced shooters cover the whole line and watched ten guys hit the deck as fast as gravity would take them.

We are all human and accidents will happen. It looked like the RO and the shooter handled it well. You and the shooter are awesome for sharing this!

thats a tough one..i had one when i was young no one got hurt...super cold elk hunting i as letting the hammer down on a 95 wichester and it slipped off my thumb....no one was with me but it scared the hell out of me

Please excuse my not knowing what is happening other than the ND. From what I see is a shooter overloaded with gear which is not secured trying to manage, balance, and coordinate too many things and the ND happens. Is this part of the contest? Do all contestants need to manage the same variables?

ND's are like car accidents. The more you shoot, the better chance of it happening.

Never done any kind of shooting event but is that mandatory to be disqualified for the entire rest of the shoot? Or just certain matches?

This would be a mandatory DQ at any match I've attended. Be it a rifle, pistol, or shotgun match, a ND is a cardinal sin in the shooting sports. Negligently discharging rounds is not to be taken lightly.
