Spin Drift...should you adjust for it?

I had someone ask me about spin drift and my response would of been to long, so I figured a video would be easier. A football in water is a good visual example of what a bullet would do in flight. One thing I wanna stress is these numbers can be different for a million different reasons. This is an example for a specific bullet/caliber/barrel length and velocity. Wether you should, or should not calculate spin drift depends on your style of shooting. F-class guys who shoot tiny groups at 1000yds may wanna adjust for spin in their calculations. My style of shooting, I think it just adds to the confusion in creating an accurate firing solution. Some apps or kestrels will calculate a lot of this for you. I wanna stress how important calling the wind correctly is. Once you master that then move on as you become more experienced as a shooter. Keep it simple stupid! Thanks for watching.....

Your definition for spin drift is wrong. it moves right due to gyroscopic precession. this is where an input on a rotating object is felt 90° in the direction of rotation. as the bullet spins clockwise, the force of gravity pulls the nose down (the input) causing the effect the happen to the right (relative to us).

Simple spin drift. I enjoy doing all my calculations in my book and fast in my head. Thanks for the video.

Most shooters should be more concerned with things like trigger control and hold than spin drift, Coriolis, gravity anomalies, ground effect, air density changes due to vertical/thermal stratification of air, and geomagnetic anomalies (assuming you are shooting bullets with some steel in them). LOL. I don't doubt that it occurs but in a pie chart for reasons I miss, spin drift is just a sliver. For me, out to 400-500 yds anything within 4-6" is a dead elk, whether I adequately read my cheat sheet before I pulled the trigger. If you spend all that time guessing where that bullet is going to precisely land you may find yourself eating carrots and potatoes, and no meat.

I've heard a lot of shooters comparing shooting a .22 LR at 200 yards to shooting a centerfire at four to five times that yardage. With that in mind, would you want to investigate spin drift for .22LR. Also, will wind affect a .22LR bullet more than a higher caliber round?

It will be worse on a larger caliper because the circumference increases dramatically, causing a much higher surface speed, which is a higher drag. So theoretically, the .22 caliper will be effected far less than a .338 lapua mag, unless the time spent in the air is greater

Wind drift is much worse for 22 LR than for centerfire cartridges. The amount of drift that a wind of given velocity and direction imparts to a projectile is almost entirely dependent on muzzle velocity and ballistic coefficient. The muzzle velocity for 22 rimfire cartridges is low and the ballistic coefficient of 22 LR projectiles is rather poor. In other words, they start out slow and lose velocity fairly quickly over distance. For example, take a 40 grain round nose standard velocity 22 LR cartridge with a muzzle velocity of 1070 fps at standard atmospheric conditions, and a ballistic coefficient of 0.124. In a 10 mph full value crosswind that projectile will sustain a lateral wind drift of around 7" at 100 yards and over 19" at 200 yards, many times greater than the wind drift that a centerfire cartridge would manifest over the same range.

I disagree with your logic. I think you should always account for every known variable. What you're saying is if someone misses a 10" diameter target at 1,000 yds by 6" to the right that their wind call was off. That's totally wrong!!!! Their wind call was almost perfect. They just failed to calculate spin drift which would have given them a near center of mass impact. Modern ballistic calculator apps like shooter automatically calculate spin drift for you. There's no reason not to calculate it.

Your logic seems right, much more so than the video's logic. However, what if I told you that in real life SD is more like 3" at 1000 yards?

Surprising, with spin drift being such a constant variable, why would you handicap yourself 11" by NOT accounting for it ?

Ya it is constant with that specific bullet, but the wind is not. If you ask anyone why they miss at long range they will all say because of the wind. In my opinion from 100-1000yds you should concentrate on good wind calls. Once you conquer wind and gain more experience as a shooter then move into more detailed firing solutions. Luckily for us most computers or PDA's will do these calculations. If you extend past 1000yds into ELR type shooting then this becomes more relevant along with Coriolis and you may need to calculate. A 1mph wind will move the bullet same distance but it's near impossible to detect by feel or visual, which makes it really hard to estimate direction.

QUESTION. Do the worlds best long range bench rest shooters consider spin drift as a separate item when checking for the zero on their rifle during the sighter session. ANSWER, NO THEY DONT. This whole topic has become just another BS subject aimed at those who dont know much. And it is intended to make the person posting it at least appear to be more intelligent than they actually are. Thank you to the maker of this video for being honest.
