Candy draws on her experiences of living with Type 1 Diabetes to illustrate the thought process of chronic illness sufferers. She explains the cycle of self-blame; blaming ourselves for outcomes out of our control, highlighting how biological factors are also at play.
Candy Gan is a 3rd year Politics and Philosophy student at the LSE, and winner of the TEDxLSE Student Competition this year. She has lived with chronic illness her entire life, but never publicly discussed it until now. Her passion lies in healthcare policies and reform, specifically how society affects individual health. At TEDxLSE, she will be talking about accountability and responsibility, inspired by her personal experiences with chronic illness.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The difference between responsibility and accountability is that responsibility can be shared while accountability cannot. Being accountable not only means being responsible for something but also ultimately being answerable for your actions.

I have to disagree, but only in part, to this notion of accountability does not = responsibility. As an internal medicine physician and also a patient with multiple chronic diseases (including T1DM), I am “accountable” to myself and my loved ones. I have a “responsibility” to control the variables that I am afforded. However, I am not at “fault” when my body fails, despite my best efforts. Therefore, accountability does = responsibility. However, accountability does not necessarily = fault. By throwing the accountability I could control back to my own doctor, who might be trying to motivate/inspire/threaten me to do my best to tighten up lifestyle modifications, would only hurt me and my loved ones. No one else. Chronic diseases are not the #1 killer in the world. The #1 killer is indifference. This is why you are correct in that chronic disease burnout is a real problem. People respond to different motivational interview styles. Clearly, your doctor miss fired in his/her attempt with you. To quote Mark Manson from the book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, “But there are also problems that we aren’t at fault for, yet we are still responsible for them. For example, if you woke up one day and there was a newborn baby on your doorstep, it would not be your fault that the baby had been put there, but the baby would now be your responsibility. You would have to choose what to do. And whatever you ended up choosing (keeping it, getting rid of it, ignoring it, feeding it to a pit bull), there would be problems associated with your choice-and you would be responsible for those as well.” Spider-Man’s uncle was only half right saying “with great power comes great responsibility.” With great responsibility (and accountability), comes great power.

Felix Cabrera I couldn’t agree with you more! This is the first Ted Talk I’ve watched that I disagree with and have been frustrated throughout its entirety. As someone who grew up with parents who have had FAAAAAR more severe medical problems than type I diabetes....and never once did my parents complain like this woman. My dad has 3 heart attacks, a stroke, 3 bypasses, an operation his carotid artery, my mom’s kidneys failed, was on dialysis for 2 years, had a transplant from her brother, had a hip replacement in 1999 and another in 2008, both had high BP & high cholesterol. This woman is talking about things that are completely out of our control...and she’s talking about her experiences with medical professionals. It’s purely anecdotal situations...she’s deceiving ‘cause she provides facts about illnesses...but she DOESN’T provide statistical facts about doctors like her doctor. If she had provided statistics about how many doctors actually exhibit what she’s claiming they allegedly do...she’d have more credence, but she doesn’t. As far as we know, she had ONE bad experience and she’s made assumptions about the tens of thousands of other doctors in North America. As a man of science, THAT is not science...it’s neither reliable, nor repeatable. Sorry, I just couldn’t believe that I just watched this “Ted Talk”. This has got to be a late April Fool’s prank! Anyway, aloha from Hawai’i! 😁🤙🏽

This was difficult to follow with the way that the speech was given. That said, it is an important topic to discuss. So to that I say thank you for your thoughts and willingness to get up onto that stage and talk about something that you so strongly feel about.

Why did your doctor want to take it away? Maybe because you weren't using it the way he told you to and he thought "if it's like that I'll give it to someone who also needs it but can follow instructions".

Yes. He wasn't threatening to take away what she needs to survive, just that she'd have to go back to self-administered insulin. This talk is baloney

And they still don't believe us men when we say women will do anything to avoid accountability 🤣 this woman is literally trying to change the literal definition of the word in an attempt to escape accountability, now that is just comedic
