Turns out, that it was actually a little smoke bomb, that he rigged in his Guitar, specifically designed for when he did the "Shock me" Lead Guitar Solo. There was apparently some type of a lighting device in a secret compartment in Ace's Guitar, and when that smoke bomb was lit, it was exciting to watch! How Ace didn't burn his fingers, I'll never know!

What impresses me more about Ace Frehley is that I recently read he never had any kind of formal guitar lessons and admits to being musically illiterate. Yet unable to distinguish the notes, chords, and keys, he's still able to create the right sounds. His story should inspire the rest of us to look past the elitist snobs and show the world what we can do. Educated or uneducated, skilled or unskilled, trained or untrained; we deserve the chance to prove what we can do beyond the barriers of institutionalized qualifications.

Myself and millions of other musicians worldwide are fully capable of the same thing, having no musical knowledge whatsoever myself, i've been playing 11 years, in many bands, without a hitch. Not to discredit Ace, he's top 5 guitarists for me easily, but you have to think that he got a lucky break meeting Gene and Paul in 1972. Plus, they wrote the songs, he merely wrote the lead for the songs, while important, without the foundation, Kiss could've never happened.

I've been playing the drums since I was 5, I'm 17 now. Never read any music, ever. Ace, despite the difference in instruments, has always been a big inspiration to prove that you don't need to know Bach inside and out to make some damn good music. that's all I got. sorry for the incoherent rambling BTW.

This was recorded back in 1977, & I find it to be amazing, what Ace Frehley was able to do on Lead Guitar Solos, such as this. Then-Beginning in 1978, with the release of the KISS SINGLES ALBUMS, things began to start to crumble, little by little. It wasn't Ace's fault. The guys in the Band wanted some time away from each other, so that's how the whole Single Albums thing came about. It gave everyone in KISS some "Breathing Room"...so to speak. Then came 1979. Paul and Gene wanted to go a different direction, in terms of musical styles, and Stage Apparel...and, as we all know by now, that's when the "Kingdom", known as KISS, began to REALLY experience a lot of problems. The two Main People, Paul and Gene, wanted to go with more of a Glammy look, and to do music, that was more Power-Pop, than anything else. They toned their music down, too...and, of course, people picked up on that right away, and began to stop listening to KISS. In 1980, Peter Criss was gone, but it's only recently surfaced, that he was actually fired from KISS, instead of quitting, like we'd been told. By late 1982, even Ace Frehley decided he'd had enough, and was out of KISS. Whatever will be, will be.

They are bringing back the Roman Colosseum on national TV and people are cheering for it.

He was a working class kid. Lessons are expensive. He had the determination enough to satisfy the fans and be successful. So I don't hold his playing in the highest regard, but he gets extra respect points.

I play guitar and Ace is so underrated I find it genuinely puzzling. Ace will hardly ever be voted in the top 50 or guitarists of all time by the music press, or music elitists. But the fluidity, aggression, string bends and vibrato are among the very best. Maybe it's because he wears a weird stage costume music snobs find it hard to take seriously. And what's more he's doing all this while he's drunk!

So true , most of the best musicians taught themselves how to play , read music and learn theory , to be a great musician you have to love music so much that you will sacrifice everything even sell your soul , and love it so much you are prepared to learn what you need to on your own and spend long hours just playing even if its on a crappy acoustic you found in a garbage bin with a warped neck a few missing frets and bent machine heads with only 4 strings .

It drives me crazy in Kiss videos when the camera doesn't show the whole Ace solo. The director/editor is acting under direction from Paul and Gene. Paul and Gene want you to focus only on them. They do it all the time. Who wants to see Paul hacking away at a few power chords while wriggling his ass or Gene sticking out his tongue for the hundredth time while Ace is playing the only technically difficult part of the whole song. As a guitarist I find it infuriating. It's pathetic. Ace rocks.

I was a serious KISS fan when I was 6 years old after hearing the Hotter Than Hell album at my cousin’s house. I had my walls covered with those giant posters you could get at Spencers in the mall. I started to collect all their vinyl. I was an obese child. Largest in the school. Listening to KISS, in particular Ace because there was nothing uncool about him, and pursuing my love of rock and roll, I lost all my weight and was inspired to this day. I’m 55, a drummer, guitarist and vocalist and have spent time in several bands. Ace was by far my favorite of the band but Peters killer drum kit made me want to learn that first. I can’t say enough about how these men of KISS really helped me as a young and insecure round boy. They fueled my imagination and showed me the possible impossibilities and I love them for it. However, when I heard RUSH for the first time. That, was pure inspiration on a higher plane of consciousness. Ace is the best of KISS though just to nail down the point of this comment.

In 1977, I was in Junior High listening to the Beatles. Then, I heard KISS - Alive II. That’s when I picked up the guitar and then, blew my father’s stereo speakers. Their Double Platinum vinyl LP -gifted to me by my HS GF is my all-time favorite rock album. I am 62 and I have the Epiphone Ace Frehley Budokan Limited Edition Les Paul Custom guitar #758.

Ace Frehley and Angus Young in my opinion are the greatest guitarists of all time and by far the most underrated, these guys are by far more entertaining on stage than anyone else and have influenced so many of the guitarists from the late 80's into the 90's.

Paul was not Eddie Van Halen, but then Eddie was no Paul Stanley, struttin' around the stage and singing those high notes in Heaven's on Fire. I'll always have a soft spot for KISS, having grown up with their music as a little kid, along with Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc. Great time to be a kid. I still love the boogie Rock n Roll, with the hard punch, and great choruses (Shout it out Loud, Rock & Roll All Night, Love Gun). I'm more of a Jazz guitarist, but I love Ace Frehley.

Ace Frehley is a talent, a real musician, a unique personality in the rock's world. He is one of the best guitar player in the whole world. With or without makeup, you can see his hands flying over the strings like wings. The notes, melodies, chords, crazy sounds, he got, will never be compared with nobody else. Frehley was the only, one and forever one, the Kiss lead guitar. Sorry for you Simmons, Frehley ruled, rules and will rule forever. Frehley, the genious.

I can easily look back at this and find a fondness for it. With his style being understood in context, I appreciate entirely what a good player he was back in his era. He inspired an entire generation of players as the spaceman. It saddens me beyond words to watch him play today, as I can see great deterioration in his motor skills. The way he holds his pick and phrases his notes today is sad. I think all the years of drug and alcohol abuse have diminished the skill set he had in the early days.
