For George Formby fans!
To mark the 50th anniversary of George Formby's passing, a short documentary about the ukulele-banjo he used for 'Leaning On A Lamp-Post'.
Andy Eastwood gives a brief history of the instrument with photos and music.
Andy pays tribute to Formby in the touring show 'We'll Meet Again' and has been a lifelong fan of the great comedian. This Gibson banjo-uke was famously used by Formby to close his farewell TV performance 'The Friday Show' in December 1960, and is the pride of Andy's collection of Formby memorabilia!
Visit Andy's website for CDs, downloads and tour dates! Online uke tuition now available - solo lessons or group Zoom workshops... just enquire!

My pop gave us his George Formby 78rpm, bakelite records around 1959, along with his wind-up clock spring driven gramophone record player. As a 7-8 year old I loved his happy music and still do. How great is it now that I can listen to him on KZfaq. My own children hated having to listen to him as kids in the 80's-90's and still knock my music tastes today. One of my favourites was "I love to hike, that's what I like. Ay for it's the grandest kind of life. etc

Wow, I have always been a fan of George and even to this day I have not seen all his movies, in comparison to today's music the tunes and lyrics out class anything going, I am very happy that his tradition is still ongoing, he was the King of Lancashire and I'm a southerner saying this.

@alantiffen1 Thanks Alan! Yes I met George Harrison twice - what a great guy, no ego at all, just genuinely enthusiastic about the uke... He was mad about it, like all of us - once you get the uke bug you're hooked! Enjoy your playing & thanks for the comment! Andy

I was really touched by the story Andy. In fact it wasn't GF that inspired me to take up the uke but someone seen briefly on the video - Doc Cox. To cut a long story short I have appear on an album or two of his. (Well, his friend, Ivor Biggun, about whom we best not say too much...!)

Thanks for this great video Andy. I played this uke before its restoration and that's one memory I'm very fond of. I remember you talking about the decision to have it restored on stage in Digswell.

@frastephen Thanks! Yes it's a UB3.... There's always a little confusion about these model numbers - the Gibson catalogues weren't always consistent, at one time a decorative version of the UB2 (no resonator) model was described as UB3. If you pause the video at 2:04 you can see the UB1, UB2, UB2 (de-luxe version), UB3, UB4 and UB5. The 5 is gold plated, but you can't tell that from the pic! Andy
