You don't have to remove the keyboard and the screws on the top panel if you want to get access to the internal parts like the CPU, HDD, RAM etc. The screws at the bottom panel (24 total) are everything that is needed to remove the bottom cover in order to get access to the internal parts. It clearly sucks that this laptop doesn't have dedicated covers for the RAM and the other stuff. It's pain in the a** to remove 24 screws every time you want to clean it or change something...

+V. A. Popov Hello V A, can you tell me how we would do this without removing the keyboard? I haven't been able to do it with just removing the back panel. I have already cleaned out my cooling fan and the next step is maxing out my RAM.

You just remove every screw you see on the cover... After you remove the screws, it's a bit tricky to remove the cover, but once you do it it's easy... There are 4 small screws under the battery, so don't forget to remove them too. Remember to use the right size screwdriver, because the screws' heads are fragile a bit..., especially the ones under the battery. All the screws on the underneath cover (except the ones that are under the battery) are identical. It's a bit tricky to remove the cover after, just be careful not to break any plastic tabs. Also be careful around the audio connectors. If you still aren't sure if u can do this, u can take it to the service i guess... Cheers.

What you're saying can't be done, not without a big risk to breaking something. The manufacturer does this on purpose to make it as difficult as possible, much like automobile manufacturers. Manufacturers should be required to build these with easy access to internal components that stand to need replacement, such as HDD or RAM.

Hi...I’m trying to remove bottom cover & it’s impossible- I think I’m learning that 5749 is not enough info. Mine is 5749-6474 & 8 hours later- with ripped hands...that one hack corner will not release. Wanted to avoid opening keys...but thinking I have no choice now? Frustrating.

Took keys out & it’s the same problem! They ask you to remove touch pad (which is the other half of bottom cover I’ve been trying to remove & cannot for 72 hrs.! I thought the point was to avoid needing case off). Waste of time for me. *Booted on 3rd try (without shutting down), but-vent still very hot right away; even though I brushed/blew/spun fan in place & blew outer vent inward (got a small lint ball)...I wanted that fan in my hands; to clean as shown/but only had a small hole to work through. What am I missing? Grrr...There is NO access to inside on mine. You undo wires & 3-4 screws under keys...but there are butt end of unreachable screws showing-totally useless. Cleaned what I could but still overheating. Do I take an axe to it?

This was quite helpful. I replaced a dead fan and applied new thermal paste and now things are running much, much cooler. I'd recommend switching out the CMOS battery at the same time that this is done, as it's a pain to open up the case and the batteries are inexpensive. One question: is it normal to have the fan attached with just one screw, as shown at about 7:00? There are three screw-holes in both the fan and the computer, so it seems odd that only one is used. I was surprised when I saw three holes and two were empty. If I need two more, then where can I get two replacement screws?

Usefull but for 5749Z only for fan replacement You need only remove bottom cover (all screw out!) then remain 1 screw on fan and one cable connection. I replaced it already two times.

Hey help me please, I removed all the screws in the lower side but i cant remove the cover, the cooler side is stuck and I am afraid of breaking it. I can lift the other side (the one with the dvd drive input) and I can see the motherboard. When I lift it the other side of the motherboard sticks with the lower side of the cover. What should I do? Gave up, there’s nothing accessible in mine. So- I even dove in to remove keys thinking there would be a panel through which I could remove fan. Screwed again. Can’t get it out. There are screws ends showing under keys...no head on other side so-internal for some reason. Can’t take body apart- back to square 1. Brushed & blew fan from the little hole- I know there’s dust chunks under sink/flap- needs a buzz saw to get to it! Put back together (2 screws spare now! Grrr)-Gets hot right alway & shuts down, after all this work. After a few boots it can hold...hit or miss. Thx Crazy to go they this with a unit 83% free space but might have to chuck it!
