Replacing the keyboard in an Acer Aspire E1 laptop.
Original keyboard was damaged by someone spilling a small amount of cola on it at the right side, causing most of the number pad to stop working, the arrow keys failed a few days later and then the Q and 2 failed shortly after that.
Acer Aspire E1 series, model V5WE2, E1-572-74506G75Mnkk.
UK model, with UK keyboard, manufactured August 2013.

Well done. I viewed a dozen videos on this to try to ascertain which of the two very similar slots the wide keyboard cable fitted into. You were the only one to show that bit explicitly.

Thank you for your informative video how to replace keyboard on Acer Aspire E1 laptop. You've shown the model first and the problem, shown how and where to take screws off and where to pray and making sure to not to damage or break the unit during opening the parts. You've shown where are the problems lies with these kind of keyboard and you've shown the final test after replacing with the new one whether it has really fix the problem, which is very crucial. I applaud you. The Video is very clear and crisp quality. No background music. I thank you again and I hope you'll come up with a video like this in the future again.

Do you have quite a powerful wireless mic? I noticed a little crackle on the audio every time your screwdriver touched the laptop chassis, particularly when you had just removed the top housing and the screwdriver brushed against the plate behind the keyboard. A bit of RF in the air seems the only explanation....

Hi John....just wanted to note that very often with these keyboards you can just place them in a warm water bath for a little while to dissolve any material/stickiness etc (after they were removed from the computer of coarse!). Then they can be gently dried in an airing cupboard or somewhere warm for a day or two and then re-fitted to the computer. There is rarely any permanent damage. Just thought i would offer this for anyone that can wait for it to dry.....then there is no money outlay, only time. Cool video, thanks!

Just wanna know, is it possible to change a UK layout keyboard to a US layout keyboard? And does it require a lot of soldering?
@jwflame
@jwflame 8 жыл бұрын
The keyboard cable just clips into the connector as shown in the video, so no soldering required. Fixing screws should be the same. You will need to change the settings in the operating system after installing a different keyboard.

John, if I wanted to build a portable USB charger what would be the best way to go about it? In terms of a circuit board, batteries, resistors? Just out of interest. I know you can buy them but I'd like to build one. I would like to use it to charge an iPhone 5. I have an idea: USB outlet, micro USB inlet and maybe a Lithium ion 9V battery. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Simeon Witter To obtain 5V from a 9V battery the usual method would be a buck converter as described here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eauYdbFmxMyzZaM.html Other methods exist but will be very inefficient.

Hi John, it's good to replace the CMOS battery whenever you strip down a laptop. Like the Windows 8 opinion. You should be busting Windows 10 by now, the latest build is very stable.

***** It's a good idea - but in this case would be asking for trouble. Battery is visible centre screen at 11:00, it's soldered directly to the board.

***** That CMOS battery (soldered tags) is rechargeable, it will outlive the machine. That I can say with certainty. Cr2032 primary coin cells in a holder - maybe. In practice, the CMOS runs off mains power or the main battery first if available, so they also tend to outlive the machine. What I would certainly do is take the opportunity to clean the fan while the unit is open. Since each opening of the unit, carries about a 10% risk of breaking those flimsy connectors for the touchpad and power cables.

***** Laptop repair is one of the major things my employer does.. and i've personally replaced about a thousand motherboards, for what that's worth. Primary cells are more common, and in my experience always on a header cable or are removable in some kind of holder. Some Toshiba models have a very small lithium ion rechargeable cell soldered directly to the board, that look exactly like on this Acer. CMOS battery failures are rare, and pretty much only happen when replacing the mainboard on a machine that's a few years old. The spare part has sat in a warehouse unpowered for a few years, so the CMOS will have drained. There was actually a service advisory from Toshiba , stating that the boards for 100/200 series machines would not POST if the CMOS battery was below 2.5Volts. One solution, if you were patient, was to leave the board hooked up to a psu or battery for a few hours. If you checked with multimeter the cell's voltage would slowly rise. These days bench space is at a premium so we just swap the cell.

From my perspective, it would make more sense to connect the longest flex cable first and descend to the shortest cable last. By fixing the shortest cable first, you limited your movement to connect the rest. Let me know what you think...

brian whittle Trackpads on laptops with number pads are typically placed center to the alphanumeric section of the keyboard, not the entire thing. Why? I don't bloody know, it's stupid in my opinion, but it seems to work as it's a long-standing trend within the major laptop manufacturers nowadays.

Max C I know, the asymmetric trackpad placement really bugs me though, I wish they would stop. Also it's a common "feature" on laptops without a number section to have the trackpad slightly to the left, why?!

Built down to a price... how true. But it's the consumers that demand that, cheap products. As long as the manufacturer can build it to last the warranty period, it's all good. It's amazing how people generally trust these devices with their sensitive data.

IsettasRock Is that true, many people pay extra for a brand name believing it will be better quality, rather than purchase a no name item. If you have more money I suppose you will be willing to spend even more for quality, if you're broke the decisions made for you :-) Judging from Jw comments he would like to have a choice of better quality rather than land fill material.

I was being overly dramatic because at several points of his video, the author editorializes about the quality of the product in what I felt was a less than complimentary. I am an ACER owner and I absolutely love my $300 US computer. I agree that it was designed and produced to a price point and personally I am amazed at the durability and I am pleased that the cost was so reasonable. Also, even though the video was edited, the swap process takes less than 30 minuets and the part is $12 US, I mean come on that is cheap. The quality of the repair video overall is very nice, succinct but a bit opinion heavy in my own opinion. Lastly I will say this, Ultimately the damaged keyboard was likely very serviceable. Here are the steps: 1. Detach the KB as shown. 2. Using compressed air, remove any loose soil, >40psi 3. Place the keyboard in a plastic tub and cover with distilled water, warm is better. 4. Use a small amount of dish soap and agitate gently until the contaminant is removed. 5. Rinse completely with fresh distilled water working all of the keys. Rinse it well. 6, Air wash with compressed air removing as much water as possible. 7. Place the unit on the middle rack of an oven that is warm ~ 140-160F for 60 minutes. 8. Reinstall and enjoy. Distilled H2O $2 US

He was just saying that the way it's put together is designed in order for them to save money to sell it cheaper. I have an Acer chromebook C720 and it's served me very well for what was pretty much $200 but it's not a scratch on quality next to my MSI GT70 which was like $2500
