Acer Predator Liquid Metal Upgrade Tutorial

I decided to upgrade my son's college laptop on my vacation. He has an Acer Predator Helios 300 and both the thermal temps and fan speeds were very high.
I created a quick tutorial on how to install Liquid Metal on the CPU and GPU and benchmarked the results. The Liquid Metal reduced the temps and fan speeds by 50%.
I have all the tools and materials you will need to install Liquid Metal.
Important Tip: The CPU chip has a very low profile and you can't have any overlapping layers of Scotch 33+ super electrical tape on the board. I made this mistake and the heatsink wouldn't make adequate contact with the CPU. I eventually figured out through trial and error that the overlapping tape was the issue.
WARNING: The Liquid Metal is conductive and will destroy your laptop if it makes contact with any electronic components on your motherboard. Proceed at your own risk.

Finally broke down and used liquid metal on my Acer Predator x17 w/ 7700HQ and GTX 1080. Liquid metal is amazing. I had previously used kyronaut thermal paste. In Cinebench R20 the max temp on the CPU is 62° C vs 80° C with paste at stock voltage! In Unigine Heaven I get max temp of 61° C on the GPU! Using Aida64's stability test on CPU, FPU, cache, and GPU I get a max of 76° C on CPU. Pretty nice.

This is a good tutorial. Well done. Even showing and explaining your mistakes shows that it's not that hard, just time consuming sometimes. A lot of people don't understand what the real benefit of liquid metal is. It's not to get 2 degrees lower temps, it's good because your thermal response is so much better. This will reduce the latency between steps of the speed step algorithm for example and I also noticed much improvement when running on the iGPU. I did this for years on CPU's and GPU's, if possible anyway. My 7 year old laptop is now even more responsive than the one a friend of mine bought new just a few months ago. The fan was tought manners with this procedure. My friend still refuses to let me METAL it because warranty...blah blah! Just do it, and be amazed what your computer can do.

This video is cool. I used liquid metal on the cpu and gpu. I completed the procedure last night and the improvement is just great! Average cpu temp is down 15 - 20c. The video card or gpu seem to have very little difference in temperature but that might be because the fans are only doing half the work. I also changed the screen in this laptop to a 120z panel and that upgrade was also superb! A great video to add for people on KZfaq _ Thanks Eddie

Use it for a couple of months, then it will suddenly stop working well. That's because the copper absorbed the liquid metal and formed a layer of protection, after that, reapply it and in theory if you don't open it anymore, it will last indefinitely and it will always work like the first day you applied it. Just use precautions like special tape, nail polish and foam barriers. 👍

Why is it always silicone conformal coating I don't get it, use ACRYLIC not silicone they are both about the same but the acrylic version is far better suited to prevent electrical shorts that's it's thing silicone is good for out doors in high humidity areas. I'm not trying to give folks a hard time but it's like 1 person goes around giving everyone bad advice acrylic conformal coating has a much higher dielectric rating than silicone. As for the tap a good option is kapton tape it's like industrial strength electric tape they use it on all types of electronics it's golden amburish and see through place it down first and put a layer of conformal coating down on top of it. This will keep the kapton tape in place and by itself kapton tape alone is better than conformal coatings but it's adhesive isn't the best and would have trouble sticking on top of a conformal coating but the conformal coating can go on top pretty easy and it helps to keep the tape in place.

JUST DO IT AS SOON AS YOU CAN if you have the same model!!!! It works so well on mine. Before the replacement, my CPU regular temperature was around 53 degree, gaming temperature was between 85-92degree ( outdoor temperature: 30 degrees, I got few times 98 degrees when the outdoor temperature was 40). And now, my regular temperature is just around 43, sometimes it's only 38. And the effect on gaming is also remarkable, I played 2 hours PUBG, 1080p with high setting, the temperature was always below 80 degrees. That is IMPRESSIVE! Don't be hesitated, the rewards are worth the risk. Because ACER left us a bomb here, it should be fixed by ourselves! (You'll understand when you open it)

I didn't used any tape or any type of protection as those things you used as i already had experience with liquid metal before watching this video. Also, there's no need for those protections if you know how to well apply and know how much of it you need to use and also, the liquid metal will solidify in less than 3 days so i doubt it would get somewhere else inside the laptop. Have to admit it, the use of that liquid protector is a great idea. Great video btw. Cheers :) Edit: You actually used too much liquid metal on both the die's and heatsink. Less is actually better.

By the way, reason I ask is cause I have the 2018 edition and it has the 6 core CPU and yes I repasted it with better paste and undervolted it but it still thermal throttles like crazy. I'm planning on putting 5 coats around the cpu and gpu just to be safe cause I can be clumsy, which is why I have a keyboard protector on my keyboard aswell as tempered glass on the screen, I love my 144hz screen. I don't like using thermal paste cause of its strange way and I dunno if it covers the whole CPU and GPU, while your video shows liquid metal, you only need a little and paint it on and I like painting, it's easier than just slapping it on. Question, does it still work just as well as it did, when you put it on? And is it okay to take with you everywhere?

@@yethuraj4873 that is correct. Your pc will run on 2133 mhz. So 2400 Hz is the closest frequency you can match to! Moreover there are a few ram sticks which say 2400 mhz but run on 2134mhz (check reviews of the ram stick you are going to buy to verify this)

@Christopher_T_Paul
@Christopher_T_Paul 5 жыл бұрын
@@ennom3176 It doesnt work like that, squeezing them too hard may compromise the distance between the CPU and the heatsink. You should try to match the thermal pads to the same thickness you already have. You really dont need to change them unless they are damaged. Some laptops have a thermal pad on the GPU. The thermal pads are often used on not so essential components and you will not notice any temperature drop by using high end expensive pads

Conformal coating AND a fuckton eletric tape. You're really not taking any chances lmao I gotta be honest with you, I only applied the liquid metal. It's still working, so I guess it's allright.
@Christopher_T_Paul
@Christopher_T_Paul 5 жыл бұрын
Conformal coating is correct, the electrical tape is wrong on so many levels. Electrical tape adhesive breaks down with heat and will be a mess after a few months. The electrical tape will offer very little protection as liquid will always find a path through the gaps. Electrical tape is an insulator by design and will hold the heat in your chip, defeating the object of liquid metal cooling. If you really had to apply a tape, I would use a kapton tape, super thin, its generally low tack and you probably will find it on your laptop somewhere.
@Christopher_T_Paul
@Christopher_T_Paul 5 жыл бұрын
@@Eddienemec My main concern is that using electrical tape is that you are trapping heat into the chip. I would stick to 2 coats of conformal coating over the capacitors and call it a day.
