I can certainly understand you did this because you have the equipment and you can. No recycling business can do this and not lose a shirt. We appreciate the education.

If those tanks were made before the 1990's, they probably have asbestos in them. Chrysotile asbestos was used as a 'binding' agent because the physical structure tends to hold the porous mass together. Typical cylinder masses are composed of about 10% asbestos by weight. Cylinders were not intended to be cut open, which is why asbestos was allowed. Modern tanks build after the mid-1990's usually do not contain asbestos. If you don't know what's in the tank, you should not be cutting it open.

Thanks for the video. Looks like some real nice tools you make them? What do you do with stuff you're taking out of them?

Derek collins why would they have asbestos inside? Acetylene tanks actually need a porus material inside...balsa wood or gypsum

I thought they had acetylene and acetone, in with the gypsum core. Why are these dry? How do you dry one out? How do you refill with acetone? Thanks!

I agree, why go to the trouble of doing this? The value of the steel is not enough to justify the time and machinery to do it.

Companies that are 100% 0 waste, eat shit up like this. "Going green". Also, scrap yard wont take certain types of tanks unless atleast a holes been drilled in them. If you're a bottle refiller, once the tank expires if you want to sell a new one, you may have to take an old in turn. This gives you a way to rid yourself.

dalmatiangirl61 Well, it's not just the matter of cost,, it's the recycling of materials to save landfills and the environment from as much toxic waste as possible. Not everything is money .

Is it safe to cut these tanks with a grinder and cut off wheel? Or maybe a reciprocating saw?

my guess would be like most pressure tanks they have a "life expectancy" once its exceeded on the date code and or the bottle shows signs of weakness, stress cracks and so on the bottle it must be recycled / taken out of service. just had mine exchanged out today.
