This is exactly what I was looking for after being instructed on torch operation and still feeling uneasy. Thank you for posting.

very informative, not many people know why the flash occurs and the NEED for arresters, you gave a good answer to this, and told us how to prevent it, well done!!

I've been welding for 15 years, and worked in many shops. I've only seen TWO regulators that were still in 'working' order while in use. Dozens of regulators have passed my eye and all but 2 were actually working. The rest were all broken shite.

Thanks for posting this! Untelling how many people you have helped not get hurt or killed by sharing this. I'm just getting into gas cutting and this is by far the best safety video I have found. How anyone can thumbs down this is just stupid.

heres another safety tip regarding acetylene cylinders worth mentioning. a cylinder involved in a fire or flashback should be monitored very carefully following the incident. there is a risk the acetylene could begin to decompose, and the cylinder could explode within minutes to hours. if the cylinder shows signs of heating or vibration, the area should be evacuated immediately, following your company's emergency response plan.

It's a great video and appreciated. Oxy-Acetylene detonation velocity is supersonic though, up there with the most energetic high explosives known.. 2000 meters per second. Don't know where 20 feet per second came from. Extremely informative. gas welding equipment is no joke

I have been using Oxyacetylene for 21 years and I would like to add a safety tip that they didn't mention about the Acetylene cylinder. If using a cylinder that needs a "T Handle or cylinder wrench keep it ON the cylinder valve while in use, if there would be emergency the 2 seconds it take put it on could be the 2 seconds that saves yours or others lives or property.

Thanks much, Needed to confirm that a #6 Rosebud heating setup for/on a Victor cutting head and whether the oxy cutting trigger remains closed and unused while adjusting oxy pressure AND while Rosebud heating which of course it does (remain closed).

22% oxygen in the air? that is a bit high. My meter always shows 20.9% and if it goes above that, I do some investigating to find out why the oxygen is rising. 23.5% will set the alarm off.

Acetylene tank caught fire at local shop, workers dragged it outside, let it burn all day, all safe. Then farmer propane tank caught fire, firemen poured water on hot tank, 4 people dead.

QUESTION: I know it would be unsafe to do so, and there would be no reason to do so, but what would happen if you were to crack open an acetylene canister and light the air coming directly out of the canister? Would it instantly blow up the entire canister or would it just ignite the pressurize acetylene coming out and create a flame (somewhat similar to a torch before you turn on the oxygen)?
@andyvan5692
@andyvan5692 2 жыл бұрын
it lights the hole in the valve, like a tourch, but it 'burns' if the tank gets too hot, there is a pressure valve, or a bolt with wax or a disc of metal in the hole, this 'blows' and lets the pressure disapate safely( there is one at the top, but there is also a 'burst disk' at the bottom of the tank, this saves the explosion, and lets a waft of gas burn, a fire, yes, but no bomb, which could raze the whole building).

@@formidablefriend8228I did what you just asked in the question when I was a kid. It just burns like torch without the oxygen.I got lucky it was a empty acetylene cylinder that had little bit gas left.

BIG NO NO!! They don't talk about NOT using Teflon on the torch fittings or other thread sealing compounds on the hoses. BIG NO NO >>>> I have been reading chat in youtube welding vids about people using Teflon on the hoses and tape to patch hoses. 1 guy is talking about having an oxy- ace explosion while filling a trash bag with oxy-ace gas he said right as he pulled the torch away from the bag it exploded and his question was is it the Teflon? He said there was no static electricity in a trash bag??? He still thinks its the Teflon not static discharge he clearly did not read the memo or has no grasp on what pure Oxygen can do.

Teflon is a brand name. It can be many different things. But what I think we are talking about is PTFE tape that is used to seal pipe threads. PTFE can be used in direct contact with oxygen, but it will burn if set on fire. I know this because it was in the Apollo 13 report. Teflon insulation was used inside the liquid oxygen tank in direct contact with liquid and gaseous oxygen. This was fine. However a damaged relay caused the wiring to overheat. In air Teflon will not burn, but in contact with 100% O2 it caught fire and the tank exploded. I've seen seals in equipment designed to use acetylene made of Teflon so I know it's compatible with that as well. And of course, PTFE lined oxyacetylene hose sets are a thing. So there is no compatibility issue between either O2 or acetylene and Teflon. The rule about no Teflon tape is actually very simple. Other things you should not use are pipe rope or anything other thread sealant. This is because all of those are for use on pipe threads. Its quite obvious to anyone who looks at the fittings that they are not pipe threaded. The seal the end of the fitting and a seat under pressure provided by the threads. So winding Teflon tape over the threads does nothing except create the possibility that Teflon tape could get on the sealing surface and prevent a good seal causing a leak. Knowing how the fittings work, it seems downright crazy that anyone would try to use Teflon tape (or pipe dope) on these kinds of lines. But at a previous job ,we had equipment that used hydrogen. It was plumbed from a manifold in a special room where the cylinders were kept, through specially built copper pipes to fittings in the labs. A regulator was installed at that point that fed copper tubing that was connected with swagelock fittings. Swagelock fittings are compression fittings that swage a brass ferrule to the copper tube and press it against a seat to make a seal. So the sealing surfaces are between the copper tube and the ferrule that is swaged onto it when the fitting is first tightened, and the ferrule and the seat of the mating connector. And what did my boss do when one was leaking? Did he cut it off with a tubing cutter and install a new swagelock connector from the cabinet that contained literally thousands of them? No, we wrapped the threads in Teflon tape and assumed it was good without even bothering to check for leaks. So yea, people are that dumb. So that's why they always say not to use Teflon tape.
