Achalasia is a medical condition that affects the esophagus, the muscular tube that connects the throat to the stomach. It is characterized by the impairment of the smooth muscle contractions that help propel food and liquids down the esophagus and into the stomach. As a result, people with achalasia experience difficulty in swallowing and may have other related symptoms.

Yess i have also achalasia, and for me it is stress related. I dont know why, but after taking vitamine C it reduces my cramps. Someone told me it was an auto imuun disease so vit C was worth trying. So that helped me alot. Now i have cramps ones a week sometimes ones in two weeks, but with stress, i get them the same day. When i get my cramp, its unbarable, it hurts and feels like its not going away, i start sweating and turn white. What gives me IMMEDIATE RELIEVE is eating a banana. Why a banana? Because with so much pain i dont have time to chew. Something that is thick inough to passage and but doesnt need much chewing. I eat the whole banana and that pushes my muscles by fors to relieve. It doest enter my stomach directly, but gives me immediate relieve. Than with a full glass of water i push it down. REALLY PUSH IT DOWN with fors. I hope this method will help someone.

Achalasia: esophageal disorder rendering it difficult for food to pass from esophagus to stomach, causing difficulty swallowing, regurgitation of undigested food, chest pain. . Esophageal peristalsis is impaired due to progressive degeneration of myenteric neurons (neurons of GI tract). Food isnt effectively moved through esophagus. Lower esophageal sphincter doesn't comoletekt relax during swallowing, stopping food from passing, leading to dilation of esophagus as food builds up. . Achalasia is often due to unknown causes, or due to secondary causes e.g. trypnosoma cruzi damaging myenteric neurons, or extra esophageal malignancies. . Achalasia causes Dysphagia = difficulty swallowing. Due to gradual nature of dysphagia, people may compensate by eating slowly, lifting the neck, throwing the shoulders back when swallowing to increase esophageal emptying. . Symptoms: regurgitation of undigested food, weightloss, chest pain, heart burn. Tests: Esophageal manometry (gold standard) = measures the strength and coordination of esophageal contractions during swallowing. Aphasia will reveal: Absence of peristaltic contractions in LOWER esophagus High pressure in lower esophageal sphincter at rest Failure of lower esophageal sphincter to relax during swallowing Also Barium swallow test during x ray. It shows dilation of esophagus and a narrow region at the end (bird's beak appearance). Upper endoscopy can be used to rule out esophageal cancer. . Treatment involves relieving symptoms and reducing pressure of lower esophageal sphincter to allow food swallowing. This can be done mechanically by tearing or cutting the sphincter muscle, or by taking medications that weaken the muscle E.g. Pneumatic dilation of lower sphincter Botulinum toxin injections Calcium channel blockers or sublingual nitrates Long lasting treatment : Heller laparoscopic myotomy = a small cut is made in the lower sphincter to relieve pressure.
