I would love a deep dive on the MadVR software for the DIY scene. While the Envy is nice and you definitely get what you pay for, $7,000 is a tad steep for those of us whose budget is already spread thing after buying an NZ5 or NZ7, nice seating, superb audio setup. The DIY scene would benefit greatly on a high quality setup guide for those with the capability, patience, and fortitude to build and setup a MadVR HTPC.

The MadVr is actually pretty much plug and play. There are a few adjustments to be made for personal preference but it’s very minimal when speaking of what would be required to adjust to see a benefit. I ran my Nero4 S for 2 weeks before receiving my MadVr and thought I wasn’t sure how it would be possible to improve on the image until it was plugged in. I can’t say enough about the images that it produces.

@@jasonwhite1495 I'm assuming you're speaking about the Envy box? If you're not please inform me, but otherwise, they offer the software for free providing you set it up on a machine powerful enough to run it. From my understanding it takes quite a bit of configuring and programming to function like the envy, but it can be done. You have to choose a player that can work with it, and for the average diy, Plex won't work with it, but to my knowledge, Kodi will.

@@zeke7515 yes sir, referring to the Envy Extreme. I would be interested as well in seeing more on it as relates to compatibility with various media players and the configuration changes for such.

This is what the HD Fury guys on AV forums are doing it's not automatic like this but they set the max nits and use the Sony 4k player or A4KTV to force DV and everything cones out as the DV meta data in it.
@RicardoGarcia-xz1rz
@RicardoGarcia-xz1rz 2 ай бұрын
The funniest thing is that most of cinemas, Dolby Vision included are about 80 to 120 nits, and HDR is about 200 to 3000 nits, so why do we have HDR? It looks great at a 65" size, but when you go bigger the "pure blacks and pure whites" of HDR are the most hard to watch thing ever. So, they put the MadVr thing to convert that overexposed and sometimes badly done hdr (see Harry Potter and The Goblet of fire beginning) to sdr. Cinema DPs want to arrive to 300 nits maximum, because they know the 1000 to 3000 nits range is a pain in the b**t to watch in huge screens.

So.... I've seen a couple of videos with this guy now, including a loooooong detailed one on Audioholics. I started out feeling like I was learning so much and I had been misled by the prevailing wisdom. But the more he talks, the more things just don't seem to calculate. I'm starting to get a Dennis Foley with Acoustic Fields kind of vibe. For example, he has stated (or at least implied) that super dark black levels aren't actually indicative of the director's intent. He massively downplays the value of sequential contrast. And he says in every interview Ive seen that Dolby Cinema doesn’t use Dolby Vision, which isn't even true. Am I off base here? Anyone else getting this vibe? Is he just shilling to people who are all dollars and no sense?

He’s saying wildly inaccurate things about reproducing creative intent with tone mapping. He’s completely misrepresenting the capabilities of Dolby Vision and how it can actually tone map closer to creative intent. Here’s what’s going on imo: Projectors are on their way out the door. Most are going to be happy with 100” panels and the Uber wealthy are buying micro led. So how is this guy supposed to sell this dated technology stack now? By saying everything you think you know about image quality is wrong. 🤷‍♂️

@@heftyfunseeker9987 Projectors will be around for a while, 100" TV's aren't mass produced yet, very difficult to ship, still cost around $20,000 and you can't put speakers behind the screen.

@@Edward135i oh for sure. I have a 204” projector setup with a 3200 ansi lumen laser projector for my backyard theater. I really hope projectors continue to improve. Unfortunately, I think by the time any sweet tech from Christie trickles down, big OLED and micro led panels will dominate. I think acoustic transparency is already on its way. My 83A90J screen vibrates and can be used as a center channel. It’s not as good as my B&W but I imagine that tech will improve too

@@heftyfunseeker9987 I could see projectors for 100in to 120in screens going away very soon. I know that the TCL 98in LCD TV is $7999 an amazing price for that big of a screen. I was more thinking of big 150in and up screens, I don't think you'll ever see a single panel that large, it's not practical to ship or even get into a house.

Woof… he’s trying to say Televisions can’t do HDR like the cinema because… Dolby Vision… and then goes on to say HDR10 with Dynamic Tonemapping is Cinema and that’s what projectors do! This must work really well on high net worth individuals who can’t be bothered with details. Enthusiasts can see right through this bs though. Yuck.

So the director who directed the production designer to get the look they wanted, the director who directed the cinematographer to have it framed and shot the way they wanted, and the director who directed the editor to piece it together in a way that matched their vision…..that person’s perspective is overrated, huh???? Set the frame rate for the video camera first so it doesn't show the DLP laser or whatever 4k cos I just see flicker. 4k is rubbish, dolby vision is rubbish and hdr is rubbish. and oh yes I used to do cinema projection back in 1989 to 1998.

The projector is likely using a color wheel to achieve red green and blue. They either didn't adjust the shutter speed of the camera to work with the projection, or they weren't able to. As digital projection goes, 4K HDR is the most faithful way to project film-shot movies as it represents those little imperfections with the most detail, and it manages to show color gradation and variance that standard digital projection cannot. As a plus, you can run the movie as many times as you want without worrying about fade and dirt reducing the quality of the picture. Yeah, it ain't the same as watching physical frames whip through a projector, but it's as close as digital can get right now.
