Achilles Tendon Rupture | 1-2 WEEKS post op, managing pain, showering, and the knee scooter - Part 5

  Рет қаралды 40,404

Hello, I'm Alexa

Hello, I'm Alexa

2 жыл бұрын

I am now 1 and 2 weeks post-op, woo! I'm off the pain medication and I got myself a knee scooter (highly recommend). Check out this week's check in video to learn more about how these first few weeks after surgery went.
Reminder that I am just sharing my experience and things could sort out differently for you. Make sure to consult a doctor for any medical advice.
One correction: I had a splint, not a cast for my first week post op. I've learned these are a bit different. A cast is a stiff material that goes all the way around your leg preventing movement and a splint is only hard on the one side - for me that was on the heel and under side part of my leg. The top part of the splint was soft. Hope that helps!
xo,
-A

I had surgery two days ago. Glad I found your channel. It’s nice to “commiserate” with others! I had the speed bridge repair plus my Haglund’s deformity was removed and they did Gastroc recession also. I was offered a nerve block but declined. I am taking Hydrocodone 3 x per day every six hours. So far I am doing well. I have a knee scooter which is so helpful with getting around my apartment.

Horrible injury. Fortunately you're young & apparently have support. Good luck on continued recovery! I'm dealing w/ a Haglund deformity in which the Dr. has recommended Achilles detach & reattach.. Much more risk w/ age & we older people by & large are not near as resilient. Thanks for good info!

I really appreciate you documenting and sharing your journey through this. It’s been very helpful. I’m in the first week of post op of a full achilles tear repair (day 6). My doctor was pretty adamant that I keep my foot elevated (23 hrs/day) for the first week. Plan to drop it to 12 after tomorrow. I don’t get the splint off for another 12 days😢. The hardest part so far about this injury is NOTHING comes fast. Every little milestone seems to take a long time to hit. Ooh and sleeping…😵‍💫

Keep hanging in there. I'm 12 days in, since I was casted (non surgery) and I'm praying to God I heal quickly and soundly. Its rough and depressing, and you feel very worthless and bored a vast majority of the day...as it's literally hard to do anything. But trust me, I know what your going through.

Hi Alexa! First off, I just wanted to say thank you for posting your Achilles’ tendon recovery journey. I am on the same road myself (under a week post op) and it is so comforting and helpful to see what lies ahead. In one of your videos you mentioned doing workouts 3 days / week. I was wondering if you could share what you did? I am a very active person normally (yoga, volleyball, climbing, skiing, and lots of long walks with my dog) so I am going a bit crazy right now. If you had anything to share that would be so appreciated. Thanks again for sharing your journey and I hope your recovery continues to go well.

You're sooo, so welcome! And absolutely - in this video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lcCZeqp4ma60nX0.html) I share my workout routine which I did while I was still non-weight bearing. Later on, I started going for long scooter rides (on my knee scooter). When I was walking again, I started going on long walks (gradually got to this point as walking was very challenging the first month I started on it without the boot). I also starting biking regularly (on a standstill bike) and gave swimming a shot. Most recently, I've gotten into pilates and absolutely love it. Hope that's helpful! I share about all this along the way in my videos as well :)

Question, the pain of stretching the muscle, scale it from 1-10 please and for how long until it was ok to bend without any pain 😝
@HelloImAlexa
@HelloImAlexa 2 жыл бұрын
Oh jeez, I have no idea. It was so long at this point. I don't think stretching was that painful compared to just pain when trying to sleep and just moving it again was painful. It was and has always been very manageable so maybe 5-6 but scales are hard to qualify 😅

Oh 1000% -- I wasn't in any pain nor had any recognizable issues prior. My hunch was that it was because I was ramping back up again post-covid and I wasn't as strong or flexible than before from playing less during those years 😕

I had ankle surgery Aug 21 (not Achilles but something else that’s pretty rare, so not many videos on it). My cast is driving me nuts! It got really loose abt 5 days post op and I had to get it replaced and now it’s too loose again… it comes off on Tuesday. I can’t wait to walk again lol. I have had no pain at all, probably because I’ve been dealing with the injury for nearly a decade but it wasn’t bad enough for surgery until recently. Do you remember how long it was until you could drive again? I had my right ankle done and I’m a commuter grad student… my mom is being a trooper and driving me to class every day but I’d love to be able to drive myself.

Awe dang! Sorry to hear it 😣 I was able to drive again once I was out of my boot -- and even then I was only driving short distances since my foot would get stiff pretty fast. I drove for the first time after 7 weeks post-op. Hope that helps!

Can you share tips on how you slept with the cast on using the pillow you recommended?
@HelloImAlexa
@HelloImAlexa Жыл бұрын
I actually never was in a cast, I was in a splint which was hard on the bottom and soft on the top. I *think* either way, you basically just sleep like you normally would but keep the pillow (which is quite large) where your feet are and they will be elevated the whole night. It’s been a while so I don’t quite remember but you may need to sleep on your back or side so it’s comfortable for your foot. Hope that’s helpful!

Hello thank you for sharing your journey . I had my surgery on December 13 and they also apply the knee blocker injection but until this day I feel a lot of soreness on the site is this normal ?? Someone else is feeling the same or is just me . ?! Also I still have the hard cast until January 12 .. I using the walker because using the knee scooter hurts even more

I bought the wedge pillow on Amazon (Wedge Pillow for Legs and Sleeping) where it raises your leg up and my husband added more pillows underneath that one to elevated it even more. The more you elevated the faster the swelling will go down. I also purchase a air Low mattress on Amazon which helps with my bottom not being sore

I notice you found the nerve block to be "uncomfortable", but without it most people would find it even more "uncomfortable". Those first two days are the most painful, and the block knocks that down. Anyway - by now you're no doubt fine.

Yeah absolutely. No doubt, and I wouldn't have wanted to do it without the nerve block either. I am just pointing out that the nerve block was also uncomfortable and I wasn't expecting that.

I currently had my cast for 4 days and first day was a nightmare, I couldn't sleep and was in constant pain for 7 hours straight crying, is this normal?? I have the same injury as u but also a bone was disconnected from its right place. Also the last 3 days I'm in sm pain all day like a 7/10 ... what should I do ? No pain killer work at this point.😃😃😃

Oh no, so sorry to hear! I was in a lot of pain the first few nights but I found the painkillers to help me. If you're in that much pain I definitely recommend talking to your doctor about it and see what they say to help. Wishing you the best 💪💪
@alishas3959

I'm so sorry to hear your pain. If the operation was to correct the bone that was disconnected too that would be why you are experiencing much more pain than just a ligament. I'm here after a full tear in achilles and no bone frags. However, I had 3 knee surgeries #1 and #3 no bone maneuvering beyond plates or screws. However, Surgery #2 was only bone and they moved the alignment of my leg. The absolute worst surgery I've ever had. When your foot has been elevated for sometime if you stand up immediately all of the blood will rush back into that area causing intense pain. Try slowly letting your foot down towards the floor a little at a time to reduce the amount of blood that will rush your surgical spot until you can handle standing up fully. I hope this helps and you are in less pain now even reading this.

@@HelloImAlexa Wow thanks for the speedy reply. I completely tore my right Achilles tendon about 3 weeks and going to have surgery this Thursday. Ive been moving around w crutches for the most part. Do you highly recommend the electric scooter? I’ll check out the video thank you 👍🏼

@@yessuapicazo7654 Course! Yeah I was wobbling around with crutches for about 2 weeks before surgery myself. I do highly recommend the scooter but it isn't electric! I don't think they have those but anything electric I think would be too dangerous. I used the scooter sooo much and it makes getting around so much quicker. I think it's a better workout than the crutches too if you're looking for that 😅Crutches are just harder to use and slower. Def be careful with scooter if you go that route too! LMK if you have any other questions and good luck with surgery on Thurs 💪
