Acorn to Arabella - Journey of a Wooden Boat - Episode 43: Bolting the Backbone Together

Acorn To Arabella

5 жыл бұрын

The backbone is bolted together! We finally have some timbers bolted together and what a great feeling. It has been a long journey up to this point, with a lot more to come, but we can finally start seeing some of Arabella's shape coming together.
We had to make our own fin head bolts which was quite the learning experience. This project is all about finding different ways around tough situations. We needed a good way to bolt the stem together with a bolt that had a low profile head. As buying them was a bit more expensive than we liked, we figured we could figure out how to make our own.
Now that the backbone in together, we are working on setting up the molds and the rib bands to be ready to steam in the frames. That day is coming right up. The weekend of September 22nd and 23rd. We will be working all day and invite you to come by and watch the frames go in. This won't be our typical open house with food but rather an opportunity to come and watch an interesting part of the build in person. Check out our website or facebook for more information.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

This entire series is freaking art; from the music, story, narration, cinematography, people/craftsman, the drive and determination, it's pure Documentary. Anyone who thumbs down this doesn't know wtf they're down thumbing. This is pure art.

You guys are making history - a video record to keep alive a tradition that goes back centuries. 55 years ago I spent a year working for a boat yard, batch building half a dozen little 26 ft sloops each year. There were still dozens of similar yards operating around the Solent (UK) but down from hundreds, 50 years before that. Not one survives. This gives your work a significance and importance that goes beyond your own satisfaction. I commend you with all my heart.

What I love about your channel is the creative thinking that has gone into your boat build. You have improvised your shop, tools and construction methods to suit your resources, human and financial. I have worked my entire life with my hands and I can really appreciate what goes into something like this. I think you are doing a fine job, and this small detail of making your own fin head bolts is a good example of the ingenuity and creative thinking that has gone into this build. Thank you for this series.

Whoa! „I just walk you through the process.“ I love you for that. Such a clear, complete description, presented in such a calm, friendly tone. I am absolutely impressed by how well you guys think everything through. „Flying before the plane“ that is what a good pilot needs to do. Know where the plane is supposed to go / where it will go. That is exactly what you are doing. If you do not know, you prototype your process (as with the lead processing). With such a great approach to planning and doing, what could possibly go wrong? All the best!

This brings back a lot of memories. My father built a similar sized boat but he had no help and worked a full-time job. It took him 30 years to complete it. He started his boat on large lofting platform where he laid out the keel. He then built a jig that supported the keel in the air and upside down. After the framework was built and mounted to the keel, he threw a large party. About 40 men at the party picked up the boat frame & keel, walked it off the platform and set in the yard. They then turned the whole thing over, picked it back up, and reset back onto the platform. Every piece of wood on used on his boat was first placed into a large homemade trough and soaked for 48 hours in Coppo wood preservative. He passed away at 77 from cancer. I still wonder if it was exposure to Coppo all those years that caused his cancer. The smell of Coppo is forever ingrained into my brain.

back before there was a www, it became apparent to a few, (certainly not to me) that, there could be a www, and that people such as yourselves, would be able to share knowledge, and experience, to a degree, and although they never imagined the extent that the www would be used to propagate delusion, I'm sure the quality, integrity, clarity, grit and pain that comes through on your channel must surprise them. I would hope young people, all over the world, are encouraged by your story, to QUESTION CONVENTIONAL THINKING, and ask themselves, "wouldn't I be more help, to the world, and to my community, and to myself, if I tried to learn to think for myself?" You know, since, imagination is limitless? BTW, fun to see the shotgun bore swab used to apply anti-foul.

Oh dear me "think for ourselves" you say?? What would our betters in government think? What would they say? Perhaps they'd hear of men forging barrels & locks & working curly maple. Casting lead balls mixing powder and cutting pillow ticking 4 patches? I'd bet they'd pee their britches and scurry into the woodwork away from the hard men that built nations away from prying eyes seeking to tax everyone....

Is it only me that feels sad for the wood shavings coming out of the drill bit? That wood was part of the boat, going to go on global adventures maybe for the next century, and right at the 11th hour, having gone from trunk, to plank, to laminate to being part of the boat’s structural heart, they then end up as sawdust on the boat shop floor . . . Another great video lads!
