This was purchased new in 1990, a 12 string Dreadnought Yamaha FG-420-12.
As shown in the video, I humidified the guitar, and removed the bulge on the sound board - behind the bridge.
I also installed a home made brass sheet on the bridge plate - commercially available as a "Plate-Mate". It is simple and can be easily made at home for less than $2 (for one piece).
If the bulge comes back, I guess I'll make a Bridge Doctor at home, and install it. Time will tell if this repair holds.
I reduced the Saddle height by 1mm by shaving it.
My home made Bridge Doctor video is here:

Thanks for your feedback! Yes, instead of writing-off a classic and avoiding spending $$ on a luthier, one can easily try this fix.

Thanks for your feedback. Yes, give it a shot. My guitar had no monetary value after all these years. Just sentimental value. Had purchased it ages ago - new - when I was still struggling in life, so..... I'm happy with the repair outcome, and it's playable again....sounds good too.

Have you tried to dehumidify it and keepinh it at 45 to 50 percent humidty. This issue usually rectifies itself. Works in solidtop and sometimes on laminated too. More humidtiy causes bulge and less humidty sunks the top.

Suman, thank you for your valuable input. However, going by the winters here in Toronto - especially with the furnace blowing hot air, I suspect it's the lack of humidity in this case, although your logic makes a lot of sense. Anyhow, I'll make measurements periodically to see how things change. If it bulges again, as a last resort (before scrapping the guitar 😭), I plan on building a bridge doctor at home and installing it.
@marutisumanroy

I agree your issue is different as your environment is dry instead of wet. Tbh if its plytop is almost useless to repair. If its solid top repair by luthier is easy and considerably cheaper. Good luck

@@marutisumanroy Suman, thanks for looping back. I think it's a solid Spruce top. Labor here is very $. Okay for a Martin, Taylor, or a Red Label; not for this. As mentioned, just an experiment, and it's working. I also installed a home made bridge doctor yesterday: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odyYhtpovsuxqH0.html Sentimental value... I purchased it new in Abu Dhabi in 1990, so....

Hi. I had same problem in my Yamaha f280 guitar. Belly bulge problem. Should i do something or wait for winter?? If it resolve it self.

F280 is a ply top. Repair is not difficult. Depends on how bad the bulge is.

Hi Prem. Particularly impressed with the bridge plate you built. Where would one get a brass sheet like that? Great work on the belly bulge too!

Thanks again - for your kind words. If my memory serves well, I think I got the brass sheets from a local company here in Toronto. I guess you'll also find those in Amazon and the big-box stores as well.

@@user-io9cd5ft9l Vova, the method I used is not complicated. It is very simple. However, it's your choice. I understand you want to use steam. My concern for you is, steam will damage other joints inside the guitar. Anyway, it'll be nice if you make a video and post it. My best wishes to you.

Hey I am facing the same buldge issue can you clear out few things for me : 1) As it has already been 1 year after this Video how is the guitar now, did bulge re-emerge ? 2)How you decided on time you'll keep guitar under weight ? Did you check using ruler after every few hours ?
@PremMenon
@PremMenon 6 ай бұрын
1) No bulge so far 2) I checked it with a straight edge (seen in the video) after at least 12 hours. Give it some time.

@@PremMenon thanks for reply Prem. My guitar is 4 years old, but it got this bulge, can high humidity be the factor for this? As you have years of experience what would you have done differently to take care of your guitar in retrospect ? It might help me.
@PremMenon
@PremMenon 6 ай бұрын
@@LearningGuitarDaily you are welcome. Well, it depends on the environment the guitar is in. Humid, dry, Temp, etc. I guess it's dryness that must have caused, and probably the guitar construction itself... because 4 years is too short. From my experience, hanging the guitar by its headstock helps - after use as opposed to keeping it on a slanting stand. It's just my opinion based on experience. There are many factors - including the string gauge used. For my kind of playing I always go for lighter ones than what comes as stock. Most recent purchase (couple of years now) was a Yamaha FS800. First thing I did was to add a bridge protector brass plate, and changed the strings to lighter ones. I didn't bother about the warranty. Did it the day I brought it home. Remember, not all the Techs in the big showrooms are qualified nor experienced to work on delicate things. Some are just there to earn some money. Repairing things is a passion as well as an art.

This was a twelve string in the first place so it's not worth putting any money into it as a six string and if you're not a luither don't try any repair work because you don't know what you're doing! A brass plate is not going to solve any sonic problems. The inner bridge plate is all chipped and needs to be removed and replaced with a proper wooden one but once again, this guitar might not be worth putting any money into!
