I actually pulled out my pins today because I'm putting on fresh pins and strings, and realized that my stock pins were flat and my replacement pins had an angle. I'll definitely be following these tips.

Nice tip I never had a string slip on a pin someone showed me a long time ago how to do a new string replacement I hold the string ball end right to the pin and slide them into the hole and like I said never had one slip but nice to know your way as well They could also tape some sand paper to a counter top and just take it down like that as well till your next words of wisdom be well

This is a curious safety mod. Over 55 years ago, my dad taught me to bend the ball end like a #6 hook. Be careful which way ya go with the ball. I those days good strings had an additional wrap of cotton thread at the ball end, that made it hard to see. With the proper size hook made dangle it in like you where ice fishing, and set it on the bridge plate toward the nut. This is easier if the saddle is slotted, instead of the pin. Set the hook gently, a trout not a cat fish. Now slide the pin in. A little butchers' wax is nice. Increase the string tension. If this is perfect a pin can fall out and the string holds pitch! How many saddles have been split, by Paul Bunion driving wedges in there? Thank You. Chris

Great idea Randy, thank you! I was always extra careful when inserting my pins w/strings into the holes anyway, because I was aware of that problem early on. But dog gone, even a veteran guitarist can learn somethin' new every day, and THAT is the way to go and end all worries. As the old saying goes: What you DON'T know......CAN hurt you!

Also, if too many string changes happen on the bridge plate, ball ends will start to dig out divots. I made a piece of hard material with holes by peg grid and it protects the plate. As a bonus , it makes a better sound. Maybe not noticeable to most.

This is my 2nd video watching you and I really enjoy your content. I am learning so much about properly setting up my guitar! I've been playing guitar for 16 years and religiously doing the little maintenance I was taught trying to prevent the 30 mile trip to avoid the local snobby luthier. It just goes to show you can always learn something else. Thank you for saving my pinboard!

Great tip Randy. I haven’t had an issue but I take extra time to make sure the ball is seated when installing a pin. I will probably put an angle on my string pins the next time I do sting changes to be on the safe side.

I have been using Brass bridge pins for a while now and find they lock really nicely with the home made Plate-mate brass strips I have installed inside all my acoustics now. To stop this kind of problem I use a different technique. I install every string in place and make sure every ball end is locked in place before re-stringing the guitar fully. This way the ball ends can’t catch on the ends of the pins. it’s almost impossible to check easily afterwards but recently I bought a cheap endoscope camera on eBay for around $20 for looking inside my guitars after I re-string them.
@RandySchartiger

I have 3 Martins and have a plate mate in all three of them lol yeah man that little endoscope camera comes in handy for all kinds of things, I worked on a mandolin last week and it worked perfectly, I was able to get it in thru the small F holes I don't think even a mirror would have fit. thanks for watching Matt!

Randy, it's been a long time since I watched one of your videos... I forgot how much I enjoy them... always educational, always entertaining. Thanks! A quick question for you... should the string-ball seat right up against the bridge plate? I always ensure a tight ball-seat by putting one hand inside the guitar and pulling the string with the other (while pressing the pin)... I can easily feel the ball up against the plate. Correct or not?

When I first began to learn how to play guitar, it happened on my very first string changing. Man, it freaked me out. I thought I had really messed up something. From that point on, for awhile, I was just paranoid as hell about it happening again. And it did happen again, several times actually..lol. A guy showed me this trick later on and it's all been cool since. Yeah, I was putting a slight bend in the string also but it still happened. This is definitely a good tip to know.

Whenever I string an acoustic I give the string a little downward kink in the wrapped portion above the ball end which makes the ball end stick forward away from the pin when you stick it in the hole. .
@RandySchartiger

Yep, do this and you don't even have to worry about the end of the pin. Put in the string, make sure it isn't in so far as to possibly be past the end of the pin, slide in the pin and carefully snug everything up.

Thanks for taking time explaining this useful tip, Randy. Short question: what would you recommend to use, if you would have to choose from rosewood and bone pins? I've read someone's post on a guitar forum that it is not such a bad idea to install wooden pins on an acoustic guitar, the only thing this man recommended was to use the pins made of the same wood as the bridge is made of. I have a rosewood bridge on my Simon& Patrick Trek Dreadnought, that's the reason of the question, if someone would ask...) Thanks, Randy.

Thanks for bridgepin tip. I have another question not related to guitar repair..... Why is the cord that is attached to your glasses hanging down in front? I would think it should be behind your neck so when you remove your glasses they would rest on your chest until you need to put them back on. Maybe I'm just too dumb. I have a similar problem and maybe some of you can help. I bought new ebony pins for my acoustic but they are a little bigger that the plastic ones I used to have. The result is that the low E string stays in that wrong position that is showed in the video. The end of the string, being bigger, just don't fit together with the pin. Do you think I should rub down the pin to make more room for the string? Thank you and sorry for my English

Randy Schartiger they aren't so floppy that they miss note due to stretching like I ran into with 9s on my jaguar that 24 inch scale I love 10s on.with 10s on my Martin are still a bit tuff for me to bend a full note way down on the neck. But I don't play enough anymore to keep my fingers calloused either.
